About Gengar Rugs

The ghost everyone loves

A Gengar rug is the easiest way to bring the most mischievous Pokémon into a room: the wide, toothy grin and glowing red eyes on a purple round rug, or a rug cut to Gengar's own spiky silhouette. Those are the two favorites. The cleverest design, though, is the shadow: a dark, Gengar-shaped patch with just the eyes and the grin showing, as if it's peeking up through your floor. Every design is printed into soft velvet that goes in the washing machine.

Its deep purple and wide grin look striking on a dark floor, and its round body suits a round rug almost perfectly.

Who Gengar is

Gengar is a Ghost and Poison-type Pokémon from the very first generation, number 94 in the National Pokédex. It's the final stage of a three-step line: the gaseous Gastly evolves into the floating, disembodied-hands Haunter, and Haunter becomes Gengar only when it's traded to another player, one of the series' original trade evolutions. Pokédex entries describe it hiding in shadows, playing pranks and making a room feel suddenly cold when it's near. For players, it's been a favorite since 1996: spooky, funny, a little bit menacing and impossible not to like.

Gengar was there from the beginning in another way too. The opening animation of the original Pokémon Red and Green shows a Gengar facing off against a Nidorino, one of the first images of the series many players ever saw.

The grin on a round rug

Gengar's face is almost made for a round rug: a round purple body, two pointed ears, red eyes narrowed in a smirk and a wide grin full of white teeth. On a 3.3 to 4.6 ft (100 to 140 cm) round rug, it fills the circle beautifully. In a bedroom, it's a cheerful, cheeky centerpiece; in a game room, it reads as a mascot for everyone who walks in. Our round rugs page shows how each size looks in a room.

A Gengar-shaped rug

Gengar's silhouette, round body, spiky back, short arms and stubby feet, is one of the most recognizable outlines in Pokémon, and it works perfectly as a shaped rug, cut to its outline in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). A Gengar-shaped rug beside a bed or in front of a gaming desk is a playful piece that looks like Gengar has simply sat down on your floor.

The shadow in the floor

Gengar is said to lurk in shadows, and that gives it the most fun rug design of all: a dark, nearly black Gengar shape on the floor, with only the red eyes and the white grin visible, as if it's rising out of a hole. In a dim room, the effect is wonderfully spooky. It suits a hallway, a doorway or the space under a desk, and it's a particular favorite around Halloween. Our Halloween rugs have more spooky ideas.

Gastly, Haunter, Gengar

The full evolution line makes one of the best Pokémon designs for a long rug:

  1. Gastly, a black sphere wrapped in a purple, gassy aura, with a wide grin.
  2. Haunter, a floating head with spiky edges and two disembodied, gloved hands.
  3. Gengar, solid, round, grinning and ready for trouble.

Laid out left to right on a 2.6×3.9 ft rug or a runner, the three tell the whole story at a glance, and they're especially fitting for a player who remembers trading with a friend just to finally get their Gengar.

Mega and Gigantamax Gengar

Gengar has two famous powered-up forms. Mega Gengar, introduced in Pokémon X and Y, sinks half into the ground, grows a third eye on its forehead and darkens to a deeper purple. Gigantamax Gengar, from Pokémon Sword and Shield, becomes a giant whose enormous open mouth forms a portal said to lead to the afterworld. A Mega Gengar rug, the third eye glowing, is a bold design for an older fan; a Gigantamax design, its huge grin spreading across the rug, is dramatic in a game room.

Shiny Gengar

For collectors, a shiny Gengar, the rare alternate-colored version, is a prize, and a shiny Gengar rug is a quiet way to show off a hunt that took hours. If you have a particular look in mind, from the shiny colors to a favorite card illustration you own, our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′. Please only send artwork you're allowed to use.

Gengar in battle

Gengar has always been a strong battler as well as a funny one. It's fast, hits hard with special moves like Shadow Ball and Sludge Bomb, and has been a regular pick in competitive play for generations. Its history has a famous quirk, too: in the original games, a programming error meant Ghost-type moves had no effect on Psychic-type Pokémon, the opposite of what was intended, something veteran players still bring up with a laugh. A battle design, Gengar mid-attack with a dark Shadow Ball glowing in its hands, is an energetic rug for a competitive player's setup.

Every October

Ghost-type Pokémon have a season of their own. Halloween events in the Pokémon games and apps regularly bring Gastly, Haunter and Gengar out in greater numbers, and October is when many fans go looking for a spooky Gengar design. A Gengar rug by the front door makes a cheerful, slightly sinister welcome for trick-or-treaters, and it stays fun long after the pumpkins are gone.

Lavender Town

For many players, Gengar's line is tied to Lavender Town, the quiet, haunting town in the original games, with its Pokémon Tower, its ghosts and its eerie music. A Lavender Town design, the tower under a purple night sky with ghostly shapes drifting around it, is an atmospheric rug for a Pokémon fan who loves the series' spookier side.

Clefable's shadow?

Fans have long noticed that Gengar's silhouette looks remarkably like Clefable's, ears, round body and all, and a popular theory suggests Gengar might be Clefable's shadow. Nothing official confirms it, but a design with a cheerful pink Clefable casting a Gengar-shaped shadow is a clever, funny rug for fans who know the theory.

Gengar in the anime

Gengar has been a regular in the Pokémon anime over the years, and in Pokémon Journeys, Ash finally caught a Gengar of his own, a prankster that fit right in. For young fans who met Gengar through the show, a design of it grinning and mid-prank is perfect for a bedroom.

A Gengar room

Gengar's palette is purple, black, red and white, and it makes for a striking room. Pair a Gengar rug with dark purple or charcoal bedding, black furniture, a few glowing purple lights and a Poké Ball or two on the shelf. For a softer, kid-friendly room, put the round face rug on a lighter floor with white furniture and let the purple be the accent. Gengar and friends

Gengar often shares a room with other favorites. Fans who love the sleepy giant will find our Snorlax rugs; for the series' mascot, Pikachu rugs; and for the most famous fire-breathing starter, Charizard rugs. A Poké Ball rug pairs with any of them.

Standard or Premium

For a bedroom, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², soft for sitting on the floor with a controller. For a game room with a desk chair, or a hard floor where kids run around, choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put and lets wheels roll freely. Our gaming rugs have more setup ideas.

Sizes

The round face rug is best at 3.3 to 4.6 ft (100 to 140 cm); a large 5.2 or 5.9 ft (160 or 180 cm) round rug fills the middle of a bedroom. A shaped Gengar is charming at 2.6×2.6 ft (80×80 cm) by the bed or 3.9 ft (120 cm) and up as a centerpiece. The evolution line suits a 2.6×3.9 ft rug or a runner; the shadow design suits a 3.3×5 ft rug in a doorway or under a desk.

Gifts

A Gengar rug is a great gift for a Pokémon fan who always picks the ghost type, a collector who finished a shiny hunt or a child who laughs at Gengar's pranks. If you aren't sure which design to choose, the round grin is the safest. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that, so order ahead for Halloween.

Care

Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes. The design is printed into the fibers, so the grin stays wide and the purple stays deep, no matter how many pranks it pulls.

A note on the character

A chill in the room

Pokédex entries describe Gengar as a creature of shadows that lurks in dark corners and makes the air around it go cold; some entries say the temperature drops by about 10 degrees when it's near. A rug of Gengar's grin rising from a pool of shadow in a dark bedroom corner is the perfect playful scare, especially for a fan who keeps the lights low and the blankets heavy.

Do you make a Gengar-shaped rug?

Yes. A Gengar cut-out keeps the spiky back and that wide, toothy grin; at its biggest, about 5.2×5.9 ft (160×180 cm), it's like a ghost lying on your floor.

What is the Gengar shadow design?

A dark Gengar shape with only the red eyes and white grin showing, as if it's peeking up through the floor. It suits a doorway or under a desk.

Can I get the Gastly, Haunter and Gengar evolution line?

Yes. The three laid out left to right on a 2.6×3.9 ft rug or a runner, from the gassy Gastly to the grinning Gengar.

Are there Mega Gengar and Gigantamax Gengar designs?

Yes. Mega Gengar with its third eye, and Gigantamax Gengar with its huge open mouth, both suit a game room.

Which Gengar rug suits a child's room?

The round grin on a lighter floor, in Standard for its non-slip back on hard floors, or Premium for softer floor play.

How do I wash a Gengar rug?

Machine wash it on a gentle cold cycle and lay it flat to dry. Gengar's purple stays spooky and his grin stays sharp.

Is this official Gengar merchandise?

No. The grins, shadows and Gastly-to-Gengar line are fan-inspired designs by Padrift. We aren't affiliated with Nintendo, Game Freak, Creatures or The Pokémon Company.
