About InuYasha Rugs

Down the well and back in time

A fifteen-year-old girl falls into the old well at her family's shrine in modern Tokyo and climbs out five hundred years in the past, in a Japan full of demons, warlords and magic. There she meets a short-tempered half-demon with dog ears, and the two set out to recover the scattered shards of a powerful jewel. InuYasha is one of the best-loved anime of the 2000s, mixing adventure, romance, comedy and folklore. An InuYasha-inspired rug brings that world into a room: glowing pink jewel shards, an old shrine well beneath a sacred tree, a sweet two-tailed cat or misty feudal landscapes. Every design is printed into soft velvet and goes in the washing machine.

The red and white design echoes his robe and works in a minimalist anime room, while the feudal landscape is calmer in a living room.

The series

InuYasha was written and drawn by Rumiko Takahashi, one of the most successful manga artists in history, and ran in Weekly Shōnen Sunday from 1996 to 2008. Its anime adaptation by the studio Sunrise aired from 2000 to 2004, with a final series in 2009 and 2010, and it was hugely popular in the United States on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Kagome, a modern schoolgirl, discovers she is the reincarnation of a priestess and must work with the half-demon InuYasha, a monk, a demon slayer and a little fox demon to gather the shards of the Sacred Jewel before evil forces can. A sequel series about the next generation, Yashahime, followed in 2020.

Jewel shards

The whole story revolves around a glowing pink jewel shattered into countless pieces scattered across the land. A rug of glowing pink jewel shards scattered across a deep blue night is a beautiful, shimmering design for a teen's room or a round rug, and it reads as a lovely abstract pattern to anyone who doesn't know the series. Our round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across.

The shrine well

The old wooden well at Kagome's family shrine is the doorway between her two worlds. A rug of a moss-covered wooden well beneath the spreading branches of a sacred tree, with paper streamers and falling leaves, is a peaceful, magical design for a bedroom, a nursery or a reading nook. For calm Japanese-inspired designs, see our zen and spiritual rugs.

The two-tailed cat

The demon slayer's companion is a small, sweet cat with two tails who can transform into a huge, fierce protector. In Japanese folklore, a cat that grows two tails, called a nekomata, is said to have magical powers. A rug of a small cream cat with two tails is a cute design for a kid's room or a cat lover's home. For more, see our cat rugs.

Prayer beads

InuYasha wears a necklace of prayer beads that Kagome can use to make him crash to the ground with a single word, a running joke fans still adore decades later. A rug of a string of dark prayer beads with white fang-shaped stones is a subtle, recognizable design for an anime room or a dorm.

Red and white

The hero's fire-resistant robe is bright red, his hair is silver-white and the priestess's outfit is red and white too. A color-block rug in bold red and white is a clean, graphic nod to the series that suits a minimalist anime room or a dorm.

Feudal Japan

The series is set during Japan's Sengoku, or Warring States, period, a century of conflict in the 1400s and 1500s. Its landscapes, misty mountains, thatched villages, rice fields and cherry blossoms, are beautiful in their own right. A feudal landscape rug is a calm, lovely design for a living room or a hallway runner. A custom runner up to 10 ft long fits most hallways. Choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put as people walk by.

Shrines in modern Japan

Kagome's family lives at a Shinto shrine in the middle of Tokyo, and real shrines like it are scattered throughout Japanese cities, often marked by a red torii gate and a sacred tree wrapped in a straw rope. A rug of a red torii gate among trees is a beautiful, peaceful design that works well in any room.

Brothers and rivals

The hero's elegant, cold older half-brother, with his long silver hair and crescent moon mark, is one of the series' most popular characters. A crescent moon on deep purple is a subtle, elegant design for his many devoted fans.

Japanese folklore

The series is packed with creatures from Japanese folklore: fox spirits, shapeshifting raccoon dogs, demon dogs, river spirits and many more. Rumiko Takahashi wove these old stories into a modern adventure, which is part of why the world feels so rich and alive.

A legendary creator

Rumiko Takahashi also created the hit series Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku and Ranma ½, and her manga have sold hundreds of millions of copies. She was inducted into the Eisner Awards Hall of Fame in 2018 and won the Grand Prix at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2019, two of the highest honors in comics.

Romance and adventure

At its heart, the series is a love story across time, with plenty of bickering along the way. For couples who grew up with it, a jewel-shard or shrine-well rug is a sweet, nostalgic piece for a shared bedroom.

Bedrooms

A jewel-shard or feudal-landscape rug brings soft, dreamy color to a bedroom. Choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², for the softest feel underfoot. Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.

Dorms and teen rooms

A prayer-beads or red-and-white rug is a fun, subtle way to show your love of the series in a dorm. Choose Standard on hard floors.

Gaming setups

A jewel-shard or red-and-white rug under a gaming desk pairs nicely with pink or red lighting. Under a gaming chair, choose Standard in 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft, which stays put and lets the wheels roll. For more, see our gaming rugs.

For older kids and teens

The series has demons and battles but plenty of comedy and heart, and it's enjoyed by older kids, teens and adults. The two-tailed cat and the landscapes are the gentlest designs.

Entryways

Just inside the front door, a small two-tailed cat or cherry blossom rug is a sweet, cheerful welcome for guests. Keep it indoors, out of the weather, and choose Standard for its grip on tile and wood.

Pairing with furniture

These rugs suit warm, Japanese-inspired rooms: low wooden furniture, paper lanterns, floor cushions, a bonsai and a few framed woodblock-style prints of your own.

Colors

InuYasha-inspired designs look best in robe red and silver-white, glowing jewel pink, deep night blue and the soft greens and blossom pinks of the feudal countryside.

Gifts

An InuYasha-inspired rug makes a great gift for a longtime anime fan. The jewel shards are the most beautiful; the prayer beads are the funniest and most knowing.

Care

Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the jewel stays glowing and bright, wash after wash.

Shippo, Naraku and the yokai of the feudal era

InuYasha's world is full of yokai, the spirits and demons of Japanese folklore, and its cast of companions and enemies gives fans many designs beyond the jewel. Shippo, the little fox demon, transforms by placing a leaf on his head, and he carries tops, toys and illusion tricks into every battle. Myoga, the tiny flea demon, gives advice and then runs away. Kirara, the two-tailed cat, grows from a kitten into a flaming beast that carries Sango and Miroku through the sky.

The villains are just as distinctive. Naraku, the spider-scarred schemer, creates incarnations from his own body: Kagura, who controls the wind with a folding fan and rides on a giant feather, and Kanna, a pale, silent girl with a mirror that steals souls. Kikyo, the priestess whose story is tied to Kagome's, brings a quiet, tragic presence to the tale.

These details translate into rugs that fans will read instantly. A single green leaf above a puff of smoke is Shippo's transformation, a playful design for a child's room. A folding fan and a drifting white feather on deep violet is Kagura, elegant enough for a living room. A round silver mirror on white is Kanna, eerie and minimal, and the Tetsusaiga, InuYasha's sword, laid across a field of red and white, is the clearest symbol of the hero himself.

Rumiko Takahashi's manga ran from 1996 to 2008, and in 2020 a sequel anime, Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, followed the next generation. For fans who grew up with the original and now share it with their own children, a rug of the sacred tree and the well where Kagome's journey begins bridges both stories.

Keep the palette to red, white, deep green and gold, the colors of shrine gates and InuYasha's robe, and the room takes on the feel of a quiet shrine in the hills.

Red and white are also the colors of a shrine maiden's robes, which Kikyo and later Kagome wear, so the palette ties the whole cast together.
