About Hatsune Miku Rugs
The singer who is a song
She has performed in sold-out arenas around the world, opened for pop stars and sung tens of thousands of songs, yet she isn't a person at all. Hatsune Miku is a virtual singer, a voice synthesizer with a turquoise-haired character attached, and fans write the songs she sings. A Hatsune Miku-inspired rug celebrates that colorful, musical, fan-made world: a turquoise, pink and silver palette, flowing sound waves and music notes, glowing equalizer bars, a sea of glow sticks or a playful scatter of leeks. Our designs are original, without the character's likeness. Every rug is printed into soft velvet and goes in the washing machine.
Hatsune Miku-inspired designs
| Design | The look | Best in |
|---|---|---|
| Turquoise palette | Bold turquoise, pink, black and silver blocks | Teen rooms, dorms |
| Sound waves | Flowing waves and music notes | Music rooms, studios |
| Equalizer bars | Glowing level meters in turquoise | Gaming setups, DJ corners |
| Glow sticks | A concert crowd's sea of light | Game rooms, bedrooms |
| Leeks | A playful scatter of green onions | Kitchens, dorms |
| Stage lights | Beams of light cutting through darkness | Home theaters, music rooms |
The turquoise palette is the simplest nod to her signature twin tails, and it pairs well with white furniture.
What is a Vocaloid?
Hatsune Miku was released in August 2007 by Crypton Future Media, a company in Sapporo, Japan, as a singing voice for Yamaha's Vocaloid software, built from recordings of the voice actress Saki Fujita. Users type in lyrics and a melody, and the software sings them. Her name roughly means the first sound of the future. Crypton gave the software a character, a sixteen-year-old with long turquoise twin tails designed by the illustrator KEI, and encouraged fans to create songs, art and videos with her. Thousands of amateur and professional producers did, turning her into a global music phenomenon.
A virtual pop star
Miku performs live as a projected 3D figure, backed by a real band, at concerts like her annual Magical Mirai events and worldwide Miku Expo tours. She opened for Lady Gaga on tour in 2014, appeared on American late-night television and has played major music festivals. The audiences, waving turquoise glow sticks in perfect rhythm, are part of the show.
A fan-made phenomenon
Crypton allows fans to create non-commercial songs, art and videos with the character under a special license, and that openness built one of the largest creative communities in music. Some fan-written Vocaloid songs, like the 2011 hit Senbonzakura, became so popular that human singers, school choirs and even traditional musicians performed them.
Her friends
Miku isn't alone. Crypton released other virtual singers too, including a pair of mirror-image twins in yellow, a cool pink-haired singer and others, each with a distinct color. A rug of bold color blocks for each of them is a fun design for a group of friends or siblings who each have a favorite.
Karaoke corners
For families and friends who love to sing, a stage-lights or glow-stick rug in front of the TV makes a perfect karaoke stage, and it goes in the washing machine after the snacks and drinks. Choose Standard so it stays put while everyone dances.
The turquoise palette
Turquoise hair, pink accents, black and silver: the character's colors are instantly recognizable. A color-block rug in turquoise, pink, black and silver, with clean geometric shapes, is a stylish, subtle nod for a teen's room or a dorm, and a bright, modern rug even to someone who doesn't know her.
Sound waves and music notes
Because Miku is music, a rug of flowing sound waves and music notes in turquoise and pink is a perfect fit for a music room, a producer's studio or a singer's bedroom. It also looks great under a keyboard stand or a mic. For more music designs, see our music rugs and vinyl record rugs.
Equalizer bars
Glowing equalizer bars, the bouncing level meters of a music app or a mixing desk, are a sleek, digital design for a gaming setup or a DJ corner. Under a gaming or studio chair, choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put and lets the wheels roll. For more, see our gaming rugs.
A sea of glow sticks
At her concerts, thousands of fans wave turquoise glow sticks, filling the arena with light. A rug of a glowing sea of glow sticks in the dark is a joyful, atmospheric design for a game room or a bedroom, a reminder of the crowd's energy and the joy of singing along together.
Leeks
Early in her fame, a popular fan animation showed Miku twirling a leek while singing a cover of a Finnish folk song, and the leek, or green onion, has been her unofficial symbol ever since. A playful rug of scattered leeks is a funny design for a kitchen or a dorm, a joke only true fans will get. In a kitchen, choose Standard for its grip.
Stage lights
Beams of colored light cutting through a dark arena make a dramatic design for a home theater, a music room or a karaoke corner. Our home theater rugs page has more ideas.
Making music at home
Miku's story is really about creativity: anyone with a computer can write a song and hear it sung. For young musicians and producers, a sound-wave or equalizer rug in a home studio is a daily encouragement to make something new and share it. Our office and studio rugs page has more setups.
Teen rooms and dorms
A turquoise-palette or glow-stick rug brings bright, cheerful personality to a teen's room or a dorm. On a hard floor, choose Standard so the rug stays put. For a softer bedroom rug, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m². Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Gaming setups
Miku stars in her own rhythm games, and a sound-wave or equalizer rug under a gaming desk pairs perfectly with turquoise RGB lighting. Choose Standard in 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft.
Round rugs
A round rug designed like a glowing speaker, a vinyl record in turquoise or a circular sound wave rippling outward is a fun shape for a music corner. Our round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across.
For all ages
Miku is popular with kids, teens and adults alike, and her designs are cheerful and family-friendly. Some fan-made songs deal with more mature themes, but the rugs themselves are bright and upbeat.
Entryways
Just inside the front door, a small turquoise or music-note rug is a bright, cheerful and musical welcome. Keep it indoors, out of the weather, and choose Standard for its grip on tile and wood.
Pairing with furniture
These rugs suit bright, modern rooms: white furniture, turquoise and pink cushions, LED strips, a keyboard or a pair of studio monitors and a few framed prints of your own.
Hallways
Down a hallway, a custom runner up to 10 ft long with a single sound wave rippling from one end to the other, or a row of glowing equalizer bars, turns a narrow space into a music track. Choose Standard, which stays put as people walk by.
Colors
Hatsune Miku-inspired designs look best in turquoise, teal and aqua with pink, black and silver accents, plus the green of a well-placed leek.

Gifts

Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the turquoise stays bright and fresh, wash after wash.
Concerts, Magical Mirai and the number 39
Hatsune Miku was released on August 31, 2007, and that date is now celebrated by fans as her birthday. She has performed in concert halls around the world, projected onto transparent screens in front of a live band, while audiences wave thousands of glow sticks in time with the music. Magical Mirai, an annual event in Japan since 2013, combines a concert with an exhibition of fan art and music, and Miku Expo tours have taken her to North America, Europe and Asia.
Fans also love the number 39. In Japanese, three can be read as mi and nine as ku, so 39 spells Miku, and sankyū sounds like thank you. You'll see 39 on fan art, merchandise and the date March 9, which some fans mark as Miku's Day.
Those details make rugs with a real fan feel. A big 39 in turquoise and magenta, styled like a concert banner, is a simple, clever design for a teen's room. A concert crowd seen from the stage, a sea of turquoise glow sticks under spotlights, captures the energy of a live show. A stage at night with a transparent screen glowing in the center is a dreamy design for a music corner.
Because Miku's songs are written by countless producers, her world is endlessly varied, from upbeat pop to ballads. A rug that mixes sound waves, the number 39 and a pair of twin tails brings that variety to the floor without choosing a single song.
For music producers who make Vocaloid songs themselves, a rug with sound waves and the number 39 makes a home studio feel like part of the community.
