About Gundam Rugs
The robot anime that changed everything
Mobile Suit Gundam premiered in Japan in 1979, created by Yoshiyuki Tomino at Sunrise, and it changed giant robot stories for good. Before Gundam, mecha were superheroes. Gundam made them weapons: mass-produced machines with model numbers, ammunition limits and pilots who were often just frightened teenagers caught in a war. Its story of the One Year War between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon is still the backbone of a franchise that now spans dozens of series, films and timelines.
Gundam is also one of the great hobby franchises. Bandai's Gunpla, the plastic model kits first released in 1980, have sold in the hundreds of millions, and many fans spend more time building mobile suits than watching them. A Gundam rug belongs in that world: the hobby room, the display shelf, the game room where the anime plays on repeat. Ours are printed into short velvet, so panel lines, decals and the crisp edges of mecha armor come out sharp, and they go in the washing machine.
The RX-78-2 and the tricolor
The original Gundam, the RX-78-2 piloted by Amuro Ray, is one of the most recognizable robots ever designed: white armor, blue chest, red and yellow accents, the V-fin on the forehead and the twin eyes. That white, blue, red and yellow tricolor runs through the whole franchise and is instantly readable even when abstracted. A tricolor rug, panels and stripes in Gundam colors with a V-fin emblem, is one of the most stylish ways to bring Gundam into a room without a single character on it.
Char and the Zeon side
Every great hero needs a rival, and Gundam has one of the best: Char Aznable, the masked ace known as the Red Comet, whose custom red Zaku was said to be three times faster than a normal one. Zeon designs, the green Zaku II with its mono-eye and spiked shoulder, the Gelgoog, the Dom and Char's red machines, have their own devoted fans, and many people prefer the villain's side. A Zeon emblem or a red Zaku makes a bold rug for anyone who has always rooted for Char.
Gundams across the timelines
Gundam is not one story but many. The Universal Century continues from the original through Zeta Gundam, ZZ, Char's Counterattack with the Nu Gundam, and Unicorn. Alternate universes reinvent it entirely:
- Mobile Fighter G Gundam (1994), with martial-arts duels between nations.
- Gundam Wing (1995), whose winged Wing Zero introduced a generation of Western fans to Gundam on television.
- Gundam SEED (2002) and SEED Destiny, home of the Freedom and Strike Freedom.
- Gundam 00 (2007), with Exia and the Celestial Being.
- Iron-Blooded Orphans (2015), the gritty story of Barbatos and the boys of Tekkadan.
- The Witch from Mercury (2022), which brought Gundam to a whole new audience with the Aerial.
Fans usually have a favorite timeline, and choosing a rug from it says as much about them as their favorite kit.
The pilots
Gundam's mobile suits are famous, but its stories are about the people inside them. Amuro Ray, the reluctant teenage engineer; Kamille Bidan of Zeta, angry and gifted; Heero Yuy of Wing, the silent soldier; Kira Yamato of SEED, caught between friends on both sides; Setsuna F. Seiei of 00; Mikazuki Augus of Iron-Blooded Orphans; and Suletta Mercury, the shy girl who pilots the Aerial. Pilot designs suit fans who connect with a character more than a machine, and a pilot paired with their mobile suit makes one of the most complete Gundam rugs there is.
Haro
Haro, the round green robot that bounces around Amuro's ship, is Gundam's mascot and one of its most charming designs. Its simple sphere, flapping ear-panels and two dots for eyes make a perfect round rug: friendly, graphic and instantly recognized by fans, while looking like a cheerful little character to everyone else. A Haro rug is a natural choice for a younger fan's room or a playful corner of a hobby space.
For Gunpla builders
Gundam fans who build kits know their own needs. A rug under a build desk has a practical job as well as a decorative one, so here's honest advice:
- Keep the art calm under the desk. Small parts and polycaps fall, and a busy, detailed design hides them. A simple emblem, a tricolor pattern or a mostly single-color design makes dropped pieces far easier to spot.
- Put the detailed art where it can be seen. A full mobile suit or battle scene belongs in front of the display cabinet, not under your chair.
- Choose Standard for the work area. Its 5 mm crushed velvet is short and tight, so tiny parts sit on top instead of sinking in, and its non-slip faux leather back lets a desk chair roll freely.
- Keep paint and glue on a mat. The rug washes well, but a cutting mat on the desk is still the best protection for solvents and paint.
A display room
For many builders, the finished kits are the point: rows of Master Grades and Real Grades lit behind glass, a Perfect Grade in pride of place. A rug in front of the display does what a pedestal does in a museum, marking the space and inviting visitors to stand and look. Choose a design that frames the collection rather than competing with it: a Gundam emblem, a tricolor pattern, or a single mobile suit silhouette in a color that echoes your favorite kit.
Scale matters here too. A shelf of compact High Grade and SD kits looks best above a smaller rug, 2.6×3.9 ft or a round one, while a room built around large 1/100 Master Grades and 1/60 Perfect Grades can carry a 5×7 ft centerpiece without the floor overpowering the models.
Mecha rooms and the bigger picture
Gundam fans are often fans of mecha in general. If your shelves also hold Evangelion Units, Gurren Lagann or Transformers, a Gundam rug is the anchor that ties the room together. Keep it to one big mecha design on the floor and let the shelves carry the rest.
The life-size Gundams
Few anime franchises have statues the size of buildings. Life-size Gundams have stood in Japan since 2009, and the full-scale Unicorn Gundam in Tokyo's Odaiba has been a pilgrimage for fans since 2017. Yokohama's moving RX-78F00 even walked and knelt for visitors for several years. For fans who've stood beneath one, a rug showing the Gundam from below, looming and heroic, brings back exactly that feeling.
Colors and the room
Gundam palettes are bold but clean: white, navy blue, red and yellow for the Federation, green and red for Zeon, black and gold for many later machines. They sit naturally in modern rooms with white walls, black or grey furniture and wood shelves. One rule helps: match the rug to the room's dominant color, a white-based Gundam for a bright room, a Zeon green or Char red for a darker one, so it looks chosen rather than added.
Sizes and levels
| Where | Size that usually fits | Level |
|---|---|---|
| Under a build desk or gaming chair | 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft | Standard |
| In front of a Gunpla display | 2.6×3.9 ft or a 3.9 ft (120 cm) round | Either |
| Beside the bed | 2×3 or 2.6×3.9 ft | Premium |
| Middle of a hobby or game room | 5×7 ft | Premium |
Premium is 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back: softer and warmer, for bedrooms and lounging, but not for rolling chairs.
The card game
Gundam now has its own trading card game from Bandai, and many builders have taken to it. For the table, choose a playmat with the right zones from our Gundam playmats; the rug belongs on the floor around it, under the chairs and in front of the deck shelf.
Shapes
Round rugs suit Haro, the Federation and Zeon emblems and a mobile suit's head. Rectangles suit full-body mobile suits and battle scenes, where nothing gets cropped. Through our custom rugs you can also have a design cut to the outline of a mobile suit or emblem, a showpiece in front of a display cabinet.
Gifts for builders
A Gundam rug is a gift that lasts longer than any kit. If you don't know their favorite series, the RX-78-2, the tricolor or Haro works for every Gundam fan, from first-time builders to veterans of the One Year War. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that.
Care
Vacuum on a low setting each week, blot spills with cold water straight away and wash the rug on a gentle, cold cycle when it needs it; let it air dry flat. The design is printed into the fibers, so the white armor stays white.
A note on the franchise
Gunpla grades and scales
Gunpla, Gundam plastic models, come in grades that every builder knows: High Grade and Real Grade at 1/144 scale, Master Grade at 1/100 with detailed inner frames, Perfect Grade at 1/60 for the most ambitious builds, and Super Deformed kits with chibi proportions. A rug laid out like a kit's runner, the plastic frame that holds the parts, with numbered pieces in white, blue, red and yellow, is a clever design for a build desk.
Under a build desk, the runner design also makes dropped parts easy to spot against its plain gray background.

FAQ
Questions about Gundam Rugs
Which Gundam is best for a rug?
The RX-78-2, the original Gundam, is the classic choice. Wing Zero, Strike Freedom, Barbatos and Char's red Zaku are favorites with fans of later series.
What rug should go under a Gunpla build desk?
Standard, with a calm design. Its short 5 mm velvet keeps small parts on top, and a simple emblem or tricolor makes dropped pieces easier to find than busy art.
Does this page cover series beyond the original Gundam?
Yes. It covers the Universal Century and alternate timelines, from G Gundam and Wing to SEED, 00, Iron-Blooded Orphans and The Witch from Mercury.
Is there a subtle Gundam design for a shared room?
The tricolor: white, blue, red and yellow panels with a V-fin emblem. Fans see a Gundam; visitors see a bold, modern pattern.
Can I get a rug cut to a mobile suit's outline?
Yes. Custom rugs can be cut to the shape of a mobile suit, a head or an emblem, in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′.
Can I play the Gundam Card Game on a rug?
Not really: the card game needs a playmat with marked zones, and our Gundam playmats are made for that. The rug is for the floor under the table and around your Gunpla shelf.
How do I clean a Gundam rug?
Shake off any loose Gunpla parts, then machine wash it on a gentle cold cycle and dry it flat. Federation white and red stay crisp.
Is this official Gundam merchandise?
No. RX-78-2, Char's Zaku and mobile suit designs here are inspired by the series; Padrift isn't affiliated with Sotsu, Sunrise, Bandai Namco or the creators of Gundam.
