About Cardcaptor Sakura Rugs

A magical girl and a book of cards

Ten-year-old Sakura opens a mysterious book in her father's basement and accidentally releases a deck of magical cards across her town. With a star-topped wand, a tiny winged guardian and her best friend filming every moment in homemade costumes, she sets out to capture them all. Cardcaptor Sakura is one of the most beloved magical girl anime ever made, sweet, funny and full of heart. A Cardcaptor Sakura-inspired rug brings that magic into a room: a pink star wand, ornate gold-bordered cards, a glowing magic circle with a sun, moon and stars, drifting cherry blossoms or soft white wings. Every design is printed into soft velvet and goes in the washing machine.

The series

Cardcaptor Sakura was created by CLAMP, a famous group of four women manga artists, and ran in Nakayoshi magazine from 1996 to 2000. Its anime adaptation by the studio Madhouse, which aired from 1998 to 2000, became a classic around the world. Sakura Kinomoto, an energetic fourth-grader, must recapture the escaped magical cards, guided by the guardian beast of the book and helped by her best friend Tomoyo and, eventually, a serious rival-turned-friend from Hong Kong. A sequel, the Clear Card arc, began in 2016, bringing Sakura back for a new generation.

The star wand

Sakura's wand, a pink staff topped with a golden star and small wings, is one of the most recognizable magical items in anime. A rug of a pink star-topped wand, or a rug cut to the shape of the star, is a sweet, magical design for a girl's bedroom. Our shaped rugs come in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm).

Magic cards

Each card holds a magical spirit, Windy, Fly, Shadow and many more, drawn in an ornate, art-nouveau style with gold borders. A rug of ornate magic cards fanned out across the floor is an elegant, beautiful design for a bedroom or a dorm, and it reads as a lovely tarot-style pattern to anyone else. Ours are original card designs.

The magic circle

When Sakura casts a spell, a glowing magic circle with a sun, a moon and stars appears beneath her feet. A glowing magic circle on a round rug is a dreamy, magical design that seems to light up the floor. Our round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across. For more night-sky designs, see our celestial rugs.

Cherry blossoms

The heroine's name, Sakura, means cherry blossom in Japanese, and soft pink petals drift through the series. A rug of cherry blossoms drifting across a pale sky is a gentle, timeless design for a nursery or a bedroom, lovely even for someone who has never seen the show. For more blooms, see our flower rugs.

White wings

Sakura often flies with a pair of white wings, and wings appear throughout the series. A rug of soft white feathered wings spread across the floor is a magical design for a girl's room, and a perfect spot for photos, standing in the middle as if you've just sprouted wings.

The little guardian

The book's guardian looks like a small yellow stuffed animal with tiny wings, until he reveals his true form as a great winged lion. He loves sweets and video games. A rug of a little round yellow guardian with tiny wings is a cute, cheerful design for a kid's room or a playroom.

Cherry blossom season

In Japan, the brief cherry blossom season each spring is celebrated with hanami, picnics under the blooming trees, and the petals are a symbol of beauty and the passing of time. In the United States, Washington, D.C.'s National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates trees given by Japan in 1912. A cherry-blossom rug is a lovely way to bring that spring feeling indoors all year.

Sun, moon and stars

The series' magic is tied to the sun, the moon and the stars, which guard the cards and shape their powers. A rug with a golden sun and a silver crescent moon facing each other across a starry circle is a balanced, magical design for a shared room, one symbol for each sibling.

Sisters and best friends

The friendship between the heroine and her devoted best friend is one of the series' sweetest threads. For sisters or best friends sharing a room, matching star-wand and cherry-blossom rugs are a lovely pair.

Entryways

Just inside the front door, a small star or blossom rug is a sweet welcome. Keep it indoors, out of the weather, and choose Standard for its grip on tile and wood.

Pairing with furniture

These rugs suit soft, magical rooms: white furniture, a canopy, pastel bedding, a little vanity and a shelf of plush toys and picture books.

Costumes and friendship

Sakura's best friend designs and sews a new costume for every card capture, and films everything. A rug of fashion sketches and a sewing kit in pastel colors is a sweet design for a young designer's room, a reminder that friends make each other shine.

CLAMP

CLAMP, made up of four women artists, is one of the most influential creative teams in manga, also known for series like xxxHolic, Tsubasa and Magic Knight Rayearth. Their elegant, detailed art style and their love of beautiful costumes are on full display here.

Magical girls

Cardcaptor Sakura is a classic of the magical girl genre, alongside Sailor Moon and Madoka Magica. For more, see our Sailor Moon and Madoka Magica rugs.

Girls' rooms

For a young fan, a star wand, magic circle or wings rug is the heart of a magical bedroom. Pair it with pink bedding, fairy lights and a shelf of plush toys. On a hard floor, choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², so the rug stays put. For a softer bedroom rug, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m². Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.

Nurseries

A soft cherry-blossom or pastel star rug is a gentle, pretty nursery design. Choose Premium for tummy time; switch to Standard once your child is walking. For more ideas, see our kids and nursery rugs.

Grown-up fans

Many fans grew up with the series in the late 1990s and still love it. A magic-card or cherry-blossom rug is an elegant, nostalgic touch for a dorm or a first apartment, with a vintage feel. For more cute designs, see our cute rugs.

Hallways

Down a hallway, a custom runner up to 10 ft long with cherry blossoms drifting from one end to the other, or a trail of gold stars, is a magical passage for a young fan. Choose Standard, which stays put as people walk by.

Colors

Cardcaptor Sakura-inspired designs look best in soft pink, gold and white, with sky blue, lavender and the deep red of the magic circle.

Gifts

A Cardcaptor Sakura-inspired rug makes a magical gift for a young fan or a nostalgic adult. The magic circle is the most beautiful and dreamy; the little guardian is the cutest.

Sizes, shipping and returns

Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.

Care

Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the pinks stay sweet, wash after wash.

From Clow Cards to Sakura Cards and the Clear Cards

Halfway through the original story, Sakura does something remarkable: rather than simply capturing the Clow Cards, she transforms them, one by one, into Sakura Cards that run on her own magic. The cards change color from Clow's red to a soft pink with stars, and her wand changes from the bird-headed key to a pink staff topped with a star. It's a quiet coming-of-age moment, and it gives fans two distinct card designs to choose from, the older red-and-gold Clow style or the pink, starry Sakura style.

The cards themselves are a rich source of designs. The four elemental cards, The Windy, The Watery, The Firey and The Earthy, work beautifully as a set of four small round rugs in pale green, blue, red and amber, or as the four corners of one larger rug. The Fly, with its spread wings, suits a child's bedroom; The Shadow and The Dark lean toward deep blue and violet for an older fan; and The Flower, scattering petals, is one of the gentlest designs in the series.

In 2016 the story continued with the Clear Card arc, which reached television in 2018. Sakura, now in middle school, finds her cards turned transparent and receives a new key from a dream. Clear Cards have a delicate, see-through look, edged in pale gold and pink, that translates into an airy, modern rug for a teen or an adult fan who grew up with the original.

Whichever era you love, the cards offer a way to decorate around the series without a character portrait: a single card at the bedside, a spread of cards fanned across a rectangle, or Sakura's own staff crossing a field of cherry blossoms.

A card design also makes a lovely gift for a longtime fan who now decorates their own home.
