About Demon Slayer Rugs
The patterns are the point
Demon Slayer has something most anime don't: its characters are recognized by the patterns of their clothes. Tanjiro's green-and-black checkerboard haori, Nezuko's pink hemp-leaf kimono and Zenitsu's yellow triangle scales are traditional Japanese textile patterns, and on a rug they're beautiful whether or not you've seen the show. That's why the classic Demon Slayer rug is a haori pattern rather than a character portrait: it looks like fine Japanese design to visitors and like Tanjiro to fans. Every design is printed into soft velvet that goes in the washing machine.
The story
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a manga by Koyoharu Gotouge, serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 2016 to 2020. It's set in Taishō-era Japan, in the early twentieth century, and follows Tanjiro Kamado, a kind-hearted boy whose family is killed by a demon and whose younger sister, Nezuko, is turned into one. Tanjiro joins the Demon Slayer Corps to find a cure for her and to face the demon king, Muzan Kibutsuji. The anime by studio ufotable, beginning in 2019, became famous for its breathtaking animation, and the 2020 film Mugen Train became the highest-grossing film ever released in Japan. The Infinity Castle films, beginning in 2025, drew enormous audiences in theaters around the world.
Haori patterns as rugs
| Character | Pattern | On a rug |
|---|---|---|
| Tanjiro Kamado | Ichimatsu, a checkerboard in green and black | A bold checkered rug that suits any room |
| Nezuko Kamado | Asanoha, the hemp-leaf star pattern, in pink | A soft, geometric pink rug |
| Zenitsu Agatsuma | Uroko, white triangle scales on yellow | A bright, graphic rug |
| Giyu Tomioka | Half solid maroon, half kikkō tortoiseshell hexagons | A striking split-design rug |
| Shinobu Kocho | Butterfly wings in lilac and teal | An elegant, delicate rug |
| Kyojuro Rengoku | White with a hem of rising flames | A fiery, dramatic rug |
Tanjiro's green-and-black check is the easiest to live with, because it reads as a classic pattern even to guests who have never watched the show.
These patterns have been part of Japanese textiles for centuries, which is why they look at home in a modern room. Tanjiro's checkerboard is especially versatile; for plain checkerboards in other colors, see our checkered rugs.
Tanjiro's checkerboard
Tanjiro's green-and-black ichimatsu haori is the single most recognizable pattern in modern anime. As a rug, it's a crisp, graphic checkerboard in two deep colors, bold enough for a game room and refined enough for a living room. A large 5×7 ft rectangle of the pattern makes a statement; a round rug with the checkerboard and a small sun-motif earring in the center is a subtle nod for fans.
Nezuko's hemp-leaf pattern
Nezuko wears a pink kimono printed with asanoha, a hexagonal star pattern based on hemp leaves, traditionally used on children's clothing in Japan as a wish for healthy growth. As a rug, it's soft, pretty and geometric, a lovely choice for a bedroom. Many fans add Nezuko's bamboo muzzle or a few pink flowers for a design that's clearly hers.
Zenitsu's scales and Giyu's split
Zenitsu's yellow haori with white triangles, the uroko scale pattern, is bright and electric, matching his Thunder Breathing. Giyu's haori is split down the middle, one half plain maroon and the other a green, yellow and orange tortoiseshell pattern of hexagons, each half with its own story. Both make striking rugs, and a Giyu split design suits a room where two styles have to meet in the middle.
Wisteria
In Demon Slayer, demons can't stand wisteria, and the mountain where new slayers train is surrounded by it, blooming purple all year round. Wisteria is also one of the most beautiful flowers in Japanese art. A wisteria design, cascading purple blossoms on a dark or cream background, is one of the loveliest rugs in our anime range, and it works as botanical art in any room. Our botanical rugs have more flower designs.
Nichirin sword guards
Every Demon Slayer carries a Nichirin sword, and each sword's guard, the tsuba, is distinctive: Tanjiro's first guard is a simple black ring, and Rengoku's is shaped like flames. After the Mugen Train, Rengoku's flame guard passes to Tanjiro's own sword, one of the most touching details in the story. A tsuba design fits a round rug perfectly. On a 3.3 to 4.6 ft (100 to 140 cm) rug, Rengoku's flame guard or Tanjiro's black ring on a dark ground is a bold, minimal piece. Our round rugs page shows each size in a room.
Breathing styles
Slayers fight with Breathing Styles, each drawn in the anime with a different effect: Tanjiro's Water Breathing appears as flowing waves in the style of classic Japanese woodblock prints, his Sun Breathing as bright flame, Zenitsu's Thunder Breathing as crackling yellow lightning and Rengoku's Flame Breathing as roaring fire. A Water Breathing design, curling blue waves in ukiyo-e style, is a gorgeous rug for a bedroom or a study, and it reads as traditional Japanese art to guests.
Hanafuda earrings
Tanjiro wears a pair of earrings inherited from his father, painted like hanafuda playing cards with a red rising sun over lines, and they turn out to carry a long history of their own. The earring design is simple and strong: a red sun on a pale card, framed in dark lines. On a round rug, it makes a quiet, meaningful emblem for a fan, and it reads as a traditional Japanese motif to anyone else.
The Mugen Train
The Mugen Train arc, told in the record-breaking 2020 film and the second season of the anime, takes place aboard a steam train racing through the night, where Tanjiro and his friends fight alongside the Flame Hashira, Rengoku. A design of the train cutting through a dark landscape under the moon, smoke trailing behind, is a dramatic, cinematic rug for a fan, and it suits a home theater as well as a bedroom.
The Demon Slayer Corps
Corps members wear black uniforms with the kanji 滅, meaning destroy, on their backs. A 滅 design, the kanji in white on black, is a minimal, striking rug for an older fan's room or a setup. The Corps' strongest swordsmen, the Hashira, each have their own colors and styles, and a favorite Hashira's colors make a personal rug.
Characters
- Tanjiro, the kind, determined hero with a scar on his forehead and sun-motif earrings.
- Nezuko, his demon sister, who refuses to harm humans and carries a bamboo muzzle.
- Zenitsu, cowardly and loud, until he falls asleep and becomes unstoppable.
- Inosuke, raised by boars, who wears a boar's head as a mask.
- Rengoku, the Flame Hashira, whose warmth made him a fan favorite.
A character design suits a fan's bedroom; Inosuke's boar mask on a round rug is a funny, bold choice.
A Demon Slayer bedroom
For a Demon Slayer bedroom, start with one pattern and build around it: Tanjiro's green and black with dark wood furniture; Nezuko's pink with white and soft lamps; wisteria's purple with cream and plants. Add a framed print, a sword stand or a few figures, and keep the rest of the room simple so the pattern shines. For the softest bedside rug, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m². Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
A setup or a dorm
Under a desk chair, choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², in 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft, which stays put and lets wheels roll freely. A checkered Tanjiro rug under a desk is a popular dorm look.
A shōnen shelf
Demon Slayer sits beside the other great modern shōnen series. You'll find our Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, My Hero Academia and Naruto pages too, and the full range in our anime and manga rugs.
Your own design
If you'd like a haori pattern in your own colors, a name in Japanese characters or a design built around artwork you own, our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, or cut it to shape. Please only send artwork you're allowed to use; custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned.
Gifts
A Demon Slayer rug is a great gift for a fan who has watched every season, a teen who cosplays Tanjiro or a lover of Japanese design who'd appreciate the patterns alone. If you aren't sure which design to choose, Tanjiro's checkerboard is the safest. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders.
Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes. The design is printed into the fibers, so the checkerboard stays crisp and the wisteria stays purple, demons or no demons.
A note on the series
The nine Hashira
The Hashira, the Demon Slayer Corps' nine elite swordsmen, each master a breathing style and carry a look of their own. Giyu Tomioka is the Water Hashira, Shinobu Kocho the Insect, Kyojuro Rengoku the Flame, Tengen Uzui the Sound, Mitsuri Kanroji the Love, Muichiro Tokito the Mist, Gyomei Himejima the Stone, Sanemi Shinazugawa the Wind and Obanai Iguro the Serpent.
Their styles give a rug a rich palette to draw from: Rengoku's flames in red and gold, Mitsuri's pink and green, Shinobu's butterfly wings in violet, Muichiro's soft mist, Tengen's flashy jewels and Obanai's serpent stripes. A rug with nine small emblems, one per Hashira, arranged like crests, suits a fan who loves the whole corps rather than one character.
If you prefer one Hashira, a breathing-style pattern works without a face: swirling waves for Water, layered flames for Flame, butterfly wings for Insect or drifting fog for Mist. They read as Japanese-inspired art to visitors and as a clear tribute to fans.
