About Vinland Saga Rugs
A Viking story that becomes something else
Vinland Saga is a manga by Makoto Yukimura, first published in 2005, set in the early eleventh century, when Danish Vikings raided and conquered England. Its hero, Thorfinn, is a boy who watches his father, the legendary warrior Thors, killed by the mercenary Askeladd, and who spends his youth fighting in Askeladd's band in the hope of one day killing him in a duel. The anime adaptation, by Wit Studio for its first season in 2019 and MAPPA for its second in 2023, brought it to a huge new audience.
What makes Vinland Saga extraordinary is where it goes next. The second half is not about war at all, but about a broken young man working on a farm, learning to live without violence and dreaming of Vinland, a distant land across the ocean where no one would need to fight. A Vinland Saga rug carries that journey, from the battlefield to the wheat field. Ours are printed into short velvet, so grey seas, weathered wood and golden fields come out with texture and depth, and they go in the washing machine.
Thorfinn
Thorfinn is two characters in one. The young Thorfinn is feral and furious, small, fast, fighting with a pair of daggers and a single purpose. The older Thorfinn, after years as a slave on Ketil's farm, is quiet, scarred and determined to find another way to live. Fans usually have a favorite version. A young Thorfinn design is fierce and full of motion; an older Thorfinn, standing in a field or looking out to sea, is calm and reflective, and suits a study or bedroom.
Askeladd
Askeladd, the cunning, charismatic leader of a mercenary band, is one of the most complex characters in manga: the man who killed Thorfinn's father, a master manipulator, and secretly a descendant of Welsh royalty with a plan of his own. Fans of the first season often love him as much as the hero. An Askeladd design, the knowing smile, the cloak, the sword, is perfect for anyone who appreciates a brilliant antagonist.
Canute and Thorkell
Canute begins the story as a timid, silent prince, and becomes a cold, determined king who will reshape the North Sea; the real Canute the Great ruled England, Denmark and Norway. Thorkell, the gigantic, cheerful warrior who loves nothing more than a good fight, is the series' wildest presence. Canute's transformation and Thorkell's joyful violence give the story two of its most memorable faces, and both make bold character rugs.
Thors and the true warrior
Thors, Thorfinn's father, was once the Troll of Jom, the most feared warrior of the Jomsvikings, who walked away from war and taught his son that a true warrior needs no sword. That idea is the heart of the whole series. A design of Thors, or of his simple message, is one of the most meaningful Vinland Saga rugs, a quiet tribute to the story's philosophy rather than its battles.
Longships and the sea
The longship is Vinland Saga's most iconic image: a slender wooden hull, a square sail and a carved prow cutting through cold, grey water. Longship designs are among the best for a rug, graphic and atmospheric, at home in a living room as much as an anime fan's bedroom. A fleet on a misty horizon or a single ship heading west into open ocean carries the story's longing for somewhere new.
The farm arc
The second season moves to Ketil's farm in Denmark, where Thorfinn and his friend Einar clear forest, plant wheat and slowly rebuild their lives. Its scenes, golden fields, the forest edge, a wooden farmhouse, dawn over the land, are some of the most beautiful and peaceful in anime. A farm design is the gentlest Vinland Saga rug: warm golds, greens and earth tones that suit a living room, a kitchen or a rustic, cabin-style space, and quietly meaningful to fans.
Einar
Einar arrives on Ketil's farm as a slave, an Englishman whose family was killed by raiders, and he hates men like Thorfinn on sight. Their friendship, built field by field and season by season, is one of the most moving in manga. For fans of the second season, a design of the two of them at work, or simply resting at the edge of the field they cleared, captures what the story is really about: two people choosing to build instead of destroy.
Leif Erikson
Leif, the explorer who first told young Thorfinn about Vinland, spends years searching the slave markets and battlefields of Europe for the boy he promised to bring home. His weathered face, his tales of the land across the sea and his stubborn loyalty make him the story's quiet grandfather figure. A Leif design, an old sailor telling stories by the fire, is a warm, unusual choice for a family room.
Weapons of the saga
Thorfinn's pair of short daggers, one his father's, are among the most recognizable weapons in manga; Thorkell's enormous axes and Askeladd's sword complete the arsenal. Crossed daggers on a round rug, or cut to their outline through our shaped rugs, make a striking emblem for fans of the first season, and they carry a double meaning for anyone who knows what Thorfinn does with them later.
Two seasons, two looks
The anime's two seasons look strikingly different. Wit Studio's first season is all motion, steel and grey skies, the brutal energy of war bands and sieges. MAPPA's second season slows down, with painterly fields, soft light and long, quiet scenes. Choose the season whose look matches your room: the first for a bold, dark space, the second for a calm and warm one.
Vinland itself
The Vinland of the title is real: the land Leif Erikson and his crew reached around the year 1000, somewhere on the coast of North America, described in the Icelandic sagas. Leif himself appears in the series, telling Thorfinn about it as a child. A Vinland design, a green, empty coast across a vast ocean, or a map of the North Atlantic from Norway to Iceland, Greenland and the new land beyond, is a beautiful piece for a study, a travel lover's room or anyone fascinated by Viking history. Our world map rugs share the same sense of exploration.
History on the floor
Vinland Saga is grounded in real history: Sweyn Forkbeard's invasion of England, the siege of London, the Jomsvikings, Canute's rise. Yukimura's art is meticulous about armor, ships, clothing and buildings. That makes it a natural fit for readers who love history as much as manga, and a Vinland Saga rug looks right in a study, beside a bookshelf full of Norse sagas and medieval histories.
Colors of the North
The series' palette is cold and earthy: slate-grey seas, misty skies, weathered wood, iron, snow, and the warm gold of the farm's wheat. Those tones are easy to live with. They suit dark wood, wool throws, leather and stone, the materials of a cabin or a Scandinavian-style room. A single warm accent, a candle, a copper lamp, picks up the gold of the fields.
Where a Vinland Saga rug works
| Room | Design idea | Size and level |
|---|---|---|
| Anime bedroom | Thorfinn, Askeladd or Thorkell | 4×6 ft, Premium |
| Living room or den | A longship on grey seas | 5×7 ft, Premium |
| Study or library | A North Atlantic map or Thors | 3.3×5 ft, Standard under a desk chair |
| Kitchen or entryway | The farm's wheat fields | 2×3 ft, Standard |
A Norse-inspired design suits a den or study, and a farm scene works for fans of the second season.
Premium is 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, softer and warmer. Standard is 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, made for desk chairs, doors and slippery floors.
A seinen shelf
Vinland Saga readers often love other serious, beautifully drawn manga for adults. If your shelf also holds Berserk, Vagabond or Attack on Titan, a Vinland Saga rug fits right in, quieter than most, but every bit as epic. Norse mythology fans will find more in our God of War rugs.
Gifts
A Vinland Saga rug is a thoughtful gift for a reader who loved the story's turn from war to peace, or a history lover who'll appreciate the longships. If you aren't sure which design to choose, a longship at sea is the safest and the most beautiful. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that.
Care
Vacuum on a low setting each week, blot spills with cold water straight away and wash the rug on a gentle, cold cycle when it needs it; let it air dry flat. The design is printed into the fibers, so the sea stays grey and the wheat stays gold for years.
A note on the series
The Jomsvikings
In the saga's world, the Jomsvikings are a legendary brotherhood of warriors based at the fortress of Jomsborg, bound by strict codes and feared across the North. Thorfinn's father, Thors, was once one of their greatest commanders before he walked away from war. A rug of a circular Viking fortress by the sea, with longships moored in its harbor, carries that history into a study or a fan's bedroom.
Dark wood, old maps and a few iron candleholders give a study the feel of a Viking longhall.
Longships suit it.
