About Yu Yu Hakusho Rugs
A punk kid, a ghost and a second chance
A tough, troublemaking teenager dies trying to save a little boy from a speeding car, and the afterlife isn't sure what to do with him, because nobody expected him to do something so selfless. He's given a second chance at life on one condition: he becomes a Spirit Detective, solving supernatural cases for the spirit world. Yu Yu Hakusho is one of the great shōnen classics of the 1990s. A Yu Yu Hakusho-inspired rug brings its energy into a room: a crackling blue spirit blast, a red rose with a thorned whip, a glowing third eye, a flying oar or black dragon flames. Every design is printed into soft velvet and goes in the washing machine.

The series
Yu Yu Hakusho was written and drawn by Yoshihiro Togashi and ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1990 to 1994. The anime adaptation by Studio Pierrot, which aired from 1992 to 1995, became a hit in Japan and later in the United States, where many fans discovered it on Cartoon Network's Toonami block in the early 2000s. Yusuke Urameshi teams up with his loyal, loudmouthed rival Kuwabara, the elegant fox spirit Kurama and the fierce swordsman Hiei, and the story builds from ghost-busting cases to the legendary Dark Tournament. A live-action adaptation premiered on Netflix in 2023.
The spirit blast
The hero's signature move is to point his finger like a gun and fire a concentrated blast of spirit energy. A rug of a pointed finger unleashing a crackling blue blast across a dark background is an energetic design for a gaming setup or a teen's room, and it's especially fun with blue RGB lighting. Under a gaming chair, choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put and lets the wheels roll. For more, see our gaming rugs.
The rose whip
The calm, gentle fox spirit fights by turning a single red rose into a long, thorned whip. A rug of a red rose trailing a curling, thorned vine on black or cream is an elegant, slightly dangerous design for a bedroom or a gothic room, beautiful even to someone who has never seen the show. For more blooms, see our flower rugs.
The third eye
The swordsman of the group hides a third eye on his forehead that gives him powerful sight. A glowing third eye on a dark round rug is a mysterious, striking design for an anime room. Our round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across. In many cultures, a third eye is also a symbol of insight and spiritual awareness; for related designs, see our zen and spiritual rugs.
The flying oar
The cheerful ferry girl who guides souls to the afterlife zips around on a flying oar instead of a broom. A rug of a wooden oar soaring through blue skies and clouds is a playful, lighthearted design for a kid's room or a playroom, and a sweet nod to one of the series' friendliest characters.
The tournament
The Dark Tournament, a brutal competition on a remote island, is one of the most famous arcs in anime. A rug of a stone fighting ring under spotlights, seen from above, is a fun design for a game room or a man cave, and a great base for action figures and epic battles. Our man cave rugs page has more ideas.
Dragon flames
The swordsman's most powerful technique summons a black dragon made of flame. A rug of a black dragon of fire coiling across deep red is a dramatic, fiery design for a gaming corner, a dorm or a teen's room.
Spirit World
The series' afterlife is surprisingly bureaucratic, run by a toddler-like prince with a pacifier and a staff of busy ogres. A funny, colorful rug of an afterlife office with paperwork, clocks and stamps is a playful design for a home office with a sense of humor.
The creator
Yoshihiro Togashi went on to create Hunter x Hunter, one of the most celebrated manga of all time. He is married to Naoko Takeuchi, the creator of Sailor Moon. For those series, see our Hunter x Hunter rugs and Sailor Moon rugs.
Toonami afternoons
For many American fans, the series is tied to memories of Cartoon Network's Toonami block, which introduced a generation to anime in the late 1990s and early 2000s. A spirit-blast rug in a game room is a fun way to relive those after-school marathons.
Ghost stories at the start
Before it became a tournament series, the early episodes were gentle, often touching ghost stories, as the hero helps lost spirits find peace. A soft, moonlit rug with drifting glowing spirits is a calm design for a bedroom that captures that quieter side.
A 90s classic
For many fans, the series is pure 1990s and early-2000s nostalgia: after-school anime, VHS tapes and trading cards. A spirit-blast or rose-whip rug in a game room or a basement den is a perfect throwback, next to a retro console. For more nostalgia, see our retro rugs.
Friendship and rivalry
The hero and his rival start out as enemies and become inseparable friends. For siblings or best friends, a pair of rugs, a spirit blast and a glowing sword, is a fun nod to that bond.
For older kids and teens
The series has plenty of fighting and some dark moments, so it suits older kids, teens and adults. The flying oar and the rose are the gentlest designs.
Bedrooms and dorms
A third-eye or dragon-flame rug brings bold personality to a bedroom or a dorm. Choose Standard on hard floors. For a softer bedroom rug, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m². Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Hallways and entryways
Down a hallway, a custom runner up to 10 ft long with a trail of blue spirit energy or a long thorned vine is a dramatic passage. Just inside the front door, a small rose or oar rug is a friendly welcome; keep it indoors, out of the weather. Choose Standard for both.
Pairing with furniture
These rugs suit bold, nostalgic anime rooms: a shelf of manga volumes and figures, a retro TV, framed prints of your own and bedding in green, red or blue.
Shaped rugs
A rug cut to the shape of a single red rose, or a wooden oar, is a playful alternative to a rectangle beside a bed. Our shaped rugs come in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm).
Colors
Yu Yu Hakusho-inspired designs look best in spirit blue, rose red, deep black and the green of the hero's school uniform, with warm sky blues for the ferry girl's oar.

Gifts
A Yu Yu Hakusho-inspired rug makes a great gift for a longtime anime fan. The spirit blast is the most iconic; the rose whip is the most elegant and the easiest to style in any room.

Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the spirit energy stays bright, wash after wash.
Kuwabara, Keiko, Koenma and Puu
Yusuke's world is full of characters who make the story warmer and funnier. Kazuma Kuwabara, his loud, loyal rival turned best friend, develops a glowing Spirit Sword and a fierce sense of honor, especially toward cats and his crush, Yukina. Keiko Yukimura, Yusuke's childhood friend, slaps him when he deserves it and waits for him through every adventure. Botan, the cheerful ferry girl, guides souls to the afterlife on her flying oar.
In Spirit World, Koenma, the son of King Enma, rules the afterlife in the form of a toddler with a pacifier, which he uses to store energy. And Puu, Yusuke's spirit beast, hatches from an egg that reflects his personality, becoming a round, blue, bird-like creature that later grows into a majestic phoenix.
Those characters inspire playful, fan-favorite rugs. A round, blue spirit beast with tiny wings is a sweet design for a younger fan's room, a nod to Puu. A glowing orange sword on a dark ground captures Kuwabara's spirit, and a pacifier with a royal seal is a funny tribute to Koenma for a game room or a dorm.
Yoshihiro Togashi's manga ran from 1990 to 1994, and the anime became a staple of Toonami afternoons in America. In 2023, Netflix released a live-action series, introducing the characters to a new audience. For fans who grew up with the original, a rug that brings together a ferry oar, a spirit beast and a glowing sword captures the whole team.
Pair these designs with greens, blues and oranges, a few volumes on the shelf and a framed tournament poster, and the room feels ready for the next case from Spirit World.
For fans who first watched the series on Toonami, these character designs bring back afternoons spent waiting for the next fight, and they make great gifts for friends who shared those memories. Pair a Puu or Kuwabara rug with a shelf of manga volumes and a framed Dark Tournament poster for the full 90s feeling.
