About Made in Abyss Rugs
A hole in the world, and a girl who wants to reach the bottom
On a remote island there's an enormous pit, the Abyss, so deep that no one knows where it ends. Its layers are full of strange creatures, ancient relics and breathtaking landscapes, and coming back up is dangerous, because the Abyss itself punishes anyone who climbs. A brave orphan girl living in the town on its rim dreams of reaching the bottom, like her legendary mother, and one day she finds a robot boy who might help her get there. Made in Abyss is one of the most beautiful, and most heartbreaking, adventure stories in anime. A Made in Abyss-inspired rug brings its wonder into a room: a cross-section map of the layers, the pit from above, explorer's whistles, twisted forests, glowing fungi or a sketchbook and compass. Every design is printed into soft velvet and goes in the washing machine.
Made in Abyss-inspired designs
| Design | The look | Best in |
|---|---|---|
| Cross-section map | The Abyss's layers drawn like rock strata | Studies, hallways |
| The pit from above | A swirl of cliffs and clouds into darkness | Round rugs, bedrooms |
| Explorer's whistles | A row of whistles in rank colors | Dorms, teen rooms |
| Twisted forest | Giant roots and mossy trunks in green light | Living rooms, reading nooks |
| Glowing fungi | Luminous mushrooms on a dark cave floor | Bedrooms, gaming setups |
| Sketchbook and compass | Hand-drawn creatures beside an old compass | Offices, studios |
The pit from above works naturally on a round rug, with its layers sinking toward the center.
The series
Made in Abyss is a manga by Akihito Tsukushi, published on Takeshobo's Web Comic Gamma since 2012. The studio Kinema Citrus adapted it into an anime in 2017, followed by a film, Dawn of the Deep Soul, in 2020 and a second season in 2022, with an acclaimed orchestral score by the Australian composer Kevin Penkin. Riko, a young apprentice Cave Raider in the town of Orth, longs to follow her mother, a famous White Whistle, into the depths. With Reg, a mysterious robot boy with no memory, she sets off on a one-way journey down through the layers of the Abyss, meeting wonders, monsters and the people who live in its depths.
The cross-section map
The Abyss is divided into layers, each with its own landscape, creatures and dangers, and the deeper you go, the harder it is to come back. A rug of a cross-section map, with the layers stacked like rock strata, hand-lettered labels of your own and tiny illustrations of forests, caves and cliffs, is a fascinating, detailed design for a study or a long hallway runner, up to 10 ft long. Choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put as people walk by. For more maps, see our world map rugs.
The pit from above
Seen from above, the Abyss is a vast circle of cliffs, waterfalls and drifting clouds spiraling into darkness. A round rug of the giant pit viewed from the sky, with a tiny town clinging to its rim, is a stunning, hypnotic design for a bedroom or a reading corner. Our round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across.
Explorer's whistles
Cave Raiders carry whistles that show their rank, from beginners' whistles to the legendary white whistles of the greatest explorers, and the whistles are used to signal each other in the depths. A rug of a row of simple explorer's whistles in rising rank colors, red, blue, purple, black and white, is a clean, clever design for a dorm or a teen's room, recognizable only to fans.
The twisted forest
One of the upper layers is a forest of enormous, twisting trees, roots and vines that tangle across the cliffs. A rug of giant mossy roots and trunks bathed in soft green light is a beautiful, peaceful design for a living room or a reading nook, and it reads as a gorgeous fantasy forest to anyone else. For more, see our botanical rugs.
Glowing fungi
Deeper down, the Abyss glows with strange, luminous plants and fungi. A rug of glowing teal and gold mushrooms scattered across a dark cave floor is a magical, moody design for a bedroom or a gaming setup. Under a gaming chair, choose Standard in 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft, which stays put and lets the wheels roll. For more, see our mushroom rugs.
The sketchbook
The heroine records everything she finds, sketching creatures, plants and relics in her notebook. A rug of an explorer's sketchbook page, with hand-drawn creatures of our own design, handwritten notes and an old brass compass resting on top, is a charming design for an office or a studio. Our office and studio rugs page has more setups.
The town on the rim
The town of Orth is built around the edge of the pit, its buildings stacked on cliffs and connected by bridges and stairways. A rug of a crowded little town perched on the rim of a huge hole, with lanterns glowing at dusk, is a cozy, adventurous design for a kid's room or a playroom.
Beauty and darkness
The series' art is soft and cute, with round, childlike characters and watercolor backgrounds, but its story is extremely dark. As the characters descend, they face painful injuries, cruelty and body horror that many viewers find hard to watch. It's a masterpiece for adults who know what they're getting into, but it is not a children's show, despite how it looks.
For adults
Because of its graphic violence and disturbing scenes, Made in Abyss suits adults. The forest, the glowing fungi and the pit from above are the most widely appealing designs, and they work as beautiful fantasy landscapes for any room.
Adventure and curiosity
At its heart, the story celebrates curiosity: the urge to see what's beyond the next ledge, no matter the cost. Real cave explorers, deep-sea divers and mountaineers feel the same pull. A map or compass rug is a fitting piece for anyone with an explorer's spirit.
Real caves and pits
The Abyss is fiction, but the world has real giant pits and caves that feel just as mysterious: sinkholes more than a thousand feet deep, caves big enough to hold forests and clouds, and cave systems still being mapped today. A cross-section rug of a real cave system is a great piece for a geology lover.
Bedrooms
A pit-from-above or glowing fungi rug brings a quiet, magical mood to a bedroom. Choose Standard on hard floors. For a softer bedroom rug, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m². Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Music
The orchestral soundtrack, with its choirs, strings and gentle melodies, is one of the most praised in modern anime. A peaceful forest rug in a listening corner, with headphones and a comfy chair, is a lovely way to enjoy it.
Pairing with furniture
These rugs suit warm, adventurous rooms: wooden shelves, old maps and globes, brass lamps, plants and a few curious objects from your own travels.
Colors
Made in Abyss-inspired designs look best in deep greens, earthy browns and sky blue, with glowing teal and gold for fungi and soft parchment tones for maps.

Gifts
A Made in Abyss-inspired rug makes a great gift for a fantasy fan, an explorer or a map lover. The cross-section map is the most fascinating; the pit from above is the most beautiful.

Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′, including long runners. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.
Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so every layer stays clear, wash after wash.
Nanachi, Mitty and the creatures of the depths
Riko and Reg don't descend alone. In the fourth layer, they meet Nanachi, a soft, rabbit-eared Hollow who lives in a hidden hideout with Mitty, a friend with a sad past. Nanachi's sleepy eyes, fluffy fur and dry humor made them an instant favorite, and their little hideout, full of mushrooms, tools and tea, is one of the gentlest places in the story.
The Abyss itself is full of creatures, many of them deadly. The Orb Piercer stalks the second layer, a bird-like hunter with a long, sharp beak. The Crimson Splitjaw pursues the explorers through the Great Fault, and the sixth layer holds a village of strange beings. Above them all, the White Whistle Ozen the Immovable guards the second layer's outpost with terrifying strength.
For rugs, the gentler side of the series is often the best choice. A cozy hideout scene with glowing mushrooms, a hammock and a small fire is a calm, magical design for a bedroom. Nanachi's fluffy silhouette with rabbit ears on deep teal is sweet and simple, and a field of luminous fungi in the dark forest of the fourth layer becomes a soft night light of a rug.
The film Dawn of the Deep Soul, released in 2020, continues the journey toward the deeper layers, and the series' beautiful backgrounds have won praise from fans of fantasy art everywhere. Because the story can be very dark, these designs suit older teens and adults who know the full series, chosen for its wonder rather than its horrors.
For fans who love the soundtrack by Kevin Penkin, a calm hideout or glowing-fungi rug makes a perfect listening corner for its haunting music.
Its soft blues and greens make the hideout design one of the calmest ways to bring the series into a bedroom.
