About Kuromi Rugs
The cute rug with an attitude
Kuromi is Sanrio's rebel, and a Kuromi rug brings a little mischief into a room: her face in the black jester-style hood with the pink skull on the front, a cheeky grin and a devil tail, on a round rug in black, purple or pink. That round face rug is the favorite. For a bolder look, a purple-and-black checkerboard with small skulls and hearts is the design teens and young adults pick for a goth-kawaii bedroom, and a rug cut to the shape of her hood is the most playful option. Every design is printed into soft velvet that goes in the washing machine.
Her black jester's hood and pink skull make her one of Sanrio's most recognizable rebels.
My Melody's rival
Kuromi first appeared in 2005, in the Japanese anime Onegai My Melody, as the self-declared rival of the sweet rabbit My Melody. She keeps a notebook listing every grudge she holds against Melody, wears a black hood with pointed ears and a pink skull, and causes trouble with her sidekick Baku, a round purple creature who isn't always much help. But Kuromi has a softer side too: she's a little girly, a little romantic and secretly sweet, which is exactly why fans love her. Over the years she has grown into one of Sanrio's most popular characters, especially with teens and adults who like their cute with an edge.
Her face on a round rug
Kuromi's face, framed by her hood and its two pointed ears, fits a round rug beautifully. On a 3.3 to 4.6 ft (100 to 140 cm) rug, the pink skull sits right in the center above her grin. In black on a pale floor, it's a striking contrast; on a soft lilac or pink background, it's gentler. A large 5.2 or 5.9 ft (160 or 180 cm) round rug gives her room to dominate the middle of a bedroom. Our round rugs page shows how each size looks.
A hood-shaped rug
Kuromi's silhouette, the rounded hood with its two tall, pointed ears and the little tail, is one of the most recognizable in Sanrio's family. Cut to that outline, it makes a shaped rug that looks like Kuromi is peeking up from the floor. Shaped rugs come in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm); a small one by the bed is a cute surprise, a large one is a centerpiece.
The pink skull
The pink skull on Kuromi's hood is a design icon on its own: a small, round skull with a cheerful look, more cute than scary. A skull-only design, one big pink skull on black, or a scatter of small skulls on lilac, is a subtle Kuromi rug that suits a teen who wants the style without a full character on the floor. It also pairs nicely with a bedroom that mixes kawaii and alternative fashion.
Goth-kawaii and the checkerboard look
Kuromi's fans often decorate in a style that mixes soft and dark: black and purple with pink accents, checkerboard patterns, skulls, hearts, bats and stars, fairy lights and plush toys. A purple-and-black checkerboard rug with small Kuromi touches is the classic base for that look. It works whether the rest of the room is pastel or dark. For plain checkerboards, see our checkered rugs, and for darker, more dramatic designs, our gothic rugs.
Kuromi and My Melody
Kuromi and My Melody are Sanrio's best-loved pair of opposites: one pink and sweet, the other black and mischievous. Fans often love both, and a split design, Melody's pink on one half and Kuromi's black and purple on the other, is a clever rug for sisters, roommates or anyone who can't decide. It's also a favorite for shared dorm rooms. See our My Melody rugs for Melody on her own.
Kuromi and Baku
Baku, Kuromi's loyal, slightly clumsy sidekick, is round, purple and always a step behind her plans. A Kuromi-and-Baku design, the two side by side, is a funny, affectionate rug for a fan who loves the odd couple, and Baku's soft purple helps balance Kuromi's black.
Born on Halloween
According to Sanrio, Kuromi's birthday is October 31, Halloween, which suits her perfectly. A Halloween Kuromi design, with bats, pumpkins and a crescent moon in purple and orange, is a fun seasonal rug for a doorway or a bedroom, and a great birthday present for a fan born in autumn. Our Halloween rugs have more spooky ideas.
A warning at the door
Kuromi is the perfect character for a bedroom door. A small rug in front of it, with Kuromi peeking out from her hood and a playful hand-lettered warning, is a funny way for a teen to say the room is theirs, and a softer message than a sign taped to the door. A 2×3 ft Standard rug works best here: its non-slip back stays put on a hallway floor, and it goes in the washing machine when it needs a refresh. Through our custom rugs, the lettering can say whatever you like.
A Kuromi bedroom
A Kuromi bedroom usually starts with three colors: black, purple and pink. Some ideas:
- Dark and dramatic: black bedding, purple LED strips, a checkerboard rug and a few Kuromi plush on the bed.
- Soft and sweet: lilac walls, white furniture, pink accents and a round Kuromi face rug.
- Mix and match: a Kuromi-and-My-Melody split rug in the middle of the room, with pink on one side and black on the other.
- Subtle: a pink-skull design on black, for an older fan who wants the style without a character.
For a bedside rug, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², the softest we make. Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Dorms and first apartments
A Kuromi rug is one of the quickest ways to make a dorm room feel like your own. A 3.3×5 ft rug fits between most dorm beds, and a round rug works under a desk chair. Choose Standard there: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which lets chair wheels roll freely and stays put on hard floors. At the end of the year, it goes in the washing machine before it goes home.
A gaming or study setup
Kuromi's black and purple palette fits naturally with an RGB gaming setup or a dark study desk. A round Kuromi rug under the chair, with purple lighting and a pastel keyboard, is a popular look for streamers and gamers who like kawaii style. Choose Standard so the chair rolls freely.
Kuromi and the Sanrio family
Kuromi often shares a room with other Sanrio characters. Her black and purple contrast nicely with Cinnamoroll's sky blue or Hello Kitty's red and white. The whole family is on our Sanrio rugs page, and pastel designs without a character are on our cute rugs page.
Standard or Premium
Standard is best on tiles, wood or laminate, under chairs, in doorways and in busy rooms, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best by a bed or in a corner where you sit on the floor. Both are printed the same way, so black stays deep and pink stays bright, and both go in the washing machine.
Sizes
Her face suits a 3.3 to 4.6 ft (100 to 140 cm) round rug; a 5.2 or 5.9 ft (160 or 180 cm) round rug fills a larger bedroom. A hood-shaped rug works from 2.6×2.6 ft (80×80 cm) by the bed up to 5.2×5.9 ft (160×180 cm) as a centerpiece. A checkerboard, a split design or Kuromi with Baku suits a 4×6 or 5×7 ft rectangle; a skull design suits a 2.6×3.9 ft rug by the bed or the door.
Your own design
If you have a favorite Kuromi illustration you own, or want a name added in her style, our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, or cut it to shape. Please only send artwork you're allowed to use; custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned.
Gifts
A Kuromi rug is a great gift for a teen redecorating a bedroom, a student moving into a dorm, a fan with a Halloween birthday or a friend whose whole wardrobe is black and pink. If you aren't sure which design to choose, her face on a round rug is the safest, and every Kuromi fan will recognize it. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders.
Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the black stays deep and the skull stays pink, however much mischief happens on it.
A note on the character
Kuromi's black notebook
Kuromi first appeared in 2005 in the anime Onegai My Melody, as My Melody's self-declared rival, riding around with her loyal sidekick Baku and plotting revenge. Her favorite weapon is paperwork: she keeps a black notebook in which she writes down every grudge she holds against My Melody, page after page of small injustices.
That notebook is a perfect detail for a rug. A black diary with a pink skull on the cover, a little lock and a few torn pages sticking out, is a funny, goth-kawaii design for a teen's desk area or a dorm room, and it makes a great gift for anyone who quietly keeps score.
