About Gurren Lagann Rugs

Break through the sky

A shy boy who digs tunnels in an underground village finds a tiny drill and a tiny robot, and his loud, fearless big brother figure convinces him to break through the ceiling to the surface. From there, the robots get bigger, the battles get crazier and the story keeps escalating until it spans the universe. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is one of the most energetic, inspiring anime ever made. A Gurren Lagann-inspired rug brings that unstoppable spirit into a room: a spinning golden drill, a spiral galaxy, sharp red sunglasses, blazing flames or a blueprint of combining robots. Every design is printed into soft velvet and goes in the washing machine.

The spinning drill is the symbol fans know best, and the spiral galaxy makes a dramatic rug for a home theater.

The series

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann was made by the studio Gainax, directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi and written by Kazuki Nakashima, and it aired in 2007. Simon, a timid digger, and Kamina, a brash, cape-wearing dreamer, escape their underground village with a fiery sharpshooter named Yoko and a small robot head that can combine with other robots. As they fight the forces keeping humanity underground, their robots combine into ever larger machines, eventually reaching the size of planets and galaxies. The series' over-the-top style, heartfelt themes and hot-blooded speeches made it a cult classic, followed by two compilation films.

The drill

The drill is the series' central symbol: a tool for digging, a weapon and a metaphor for pushing forward no matter what. A rug of a spinning golden drill with spiral grooves, on black or deep red, is a bold, energetic design for a gaming setup, a dorm or a teen's room. As a shaped rug cut to a drill's cone, it's even more dramatic. Our shaped rugs come in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm).

Spiral galaxies

In the series, spiral power, the force of evolution and willpower, connects drills, DNA and galaxies. A swirling spiral galaxy on a round rug is a gorgeous design for a bedroom or a home theater, and a beautiful piece of space art for anyone who loves the stars. Our round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across. For more, see our space rugs.

Pointed sunglasses

The brash hero wears a pair of sharp, angular red sunglasses that became one of anime's most famous accessories. A rug of oversized pointed red shades on black or gold is a fun, cocky design for a dorm, a game room or anyone who never backs down.

Flames

The series is pure fire, from its emblem to its speeches. A rug of bold, stylized orange and red flames on black is an energetic, fiery design for a gaming corner, a dorm or a man cave. Under a gaming chair, choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put and lets the wheels roll. For more, see our gaming rugs.

Combining robots

The robots in the series combine again and again, each combination bigger than the last. A blueprint rug showing small robots stacking and merging into a giant one, drawn in white lines on blue, is a clever design for a studio, an engineer's office or a model-kit corner. For more mecha, see our Transformers and Evangelion rugs.

Breaking through

The series begins with a boy breaking through the roof of his underground world to see the sky for the first time. A rug of golden sunlight bursting through cracked rock is a dramatic, motivational design for a hallway, a home gym or anywhere you need a push. A custom runner up to 10 ft long fits most hallways.

Real drills and spirals

Spirals turn up everywhere in nature, which the series loves to point out: in the double helix of DNA, the shells of snails, the arms of galaxies and the threads of a screw. Real tunnel-boring machines use enormous rotating heads to dig through rock, inching forward day after day. A drill or galaxy rug is a fun way to talk about that hidden geometry with a curious kid.

The heroine with a rifle

The fiery sharpshooter of the group, with her long red hair and enormous rifle, is one of the series' most popular characters. A bold red-and-black color-block rug with a single flame is a subtle nod for her fans.

Speeches and catchphrases

The series is famous for over-the-top, inspiring speeches about kicking reason to the curb and doing the impossible. A custom rug with your own motivational motto in bold, fiery lettering is a fun piece for a home gym or a study, as long as the words are your own.

Home gyms

For a home gym, a breaking-through or flame rug in the stretching area is a motivating touch for early workouts. Choose Standard so it stays put. For more, see our sports rugs.

Believing in yourself

The series' biggest theme is believing in yourself, or in the person who believes in you, and pushing past every limit. Fans often say it got them through hard times. A drill or breaking-through rug is a small, daily reminder to keep digging forward, whatever the obstacle.

From Gainax to Trigger

After this series, its director and key staff founded Studio Trigger in 2011, which went on to make Kill la Kill, Promare and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. For those, see our Kill la Kill and Cyberpunk Edgerunners rugs.

Brothers in spirit

The bond between the shy digger and his loud, confident friend, who treats him like a little brother, is the emotional core of the story. For brothers or best friends, a pair of rugs, a drill and a pair of pointed sunglasses, is a fitting tribute to that friendship.

Gaming setups and man caves

A drill, flame or galaxy rug is a natural centerpiece for a gaming setup or a man cave, alongside a shelf of mecha model kits and posters. Our man cave rugs page has more ideas.

Teen rooms and dorms

A sunglasses or drill rug brings bold personality to a teen's room or a dorm. Choose Standard on hard floors. For a softer bedroom rug, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m². Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.

For teens and adults

The series has big battles, loss and some fan service, so it suits teens and adults best. The galaxy and drill designs are the most widely appealing.

Pairing with furniture

These rugs suit bold, energetic rooms: black and red furniture, metal shelving for model kits, LED strips in orange and a few framed prints of your own. A gold accent, a lamp or a picture frame, echoes the golden drill nicely.

Colors

Gurren Lagann-inspired designs look best in fiery red and orange, golden yellow and deep black, with cosmic blues and purples for spiral galaxies.

Gifts

Sizes, shipping and returns

Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′, including long runners. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.

Care

Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the fire stays bright and bold, wash after wash.

Kamina City, Boota and the Anti-Spirals

Gurren Lagann's second half jumps forward seven years. Simon and his friends have won, and humanity has left the underground to build Kamina City, a sprawling surface metropolis named after the fallen hero, with a giant statue of Kamina at its heart. Rossiu, once a shy boy from a buried village, becomes a hard-headed leader, and the Spiral King Lordgenome, the series' first great villain, returns with a warning about a far greater enemy: the Anti-Spirals.

From there, the battles grow to an absurd, glorious scale, ending with Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, a mecha larger than galaxies, throwing galaxies like shuriken. Through all of it, Boota, Simon's tiny pig-mole, rides on his shoulder or hides in Yoko's hair, the smallest and bravest member of the crew.

Each part of that story suggests a rug. A city skyline crowned with a heroic statue suits a teen's room with a sense of triumph. A cosmic battle of spirals and galaxies in deep purple and gold makes a dramatic design for a gaming setup. Boota, round and pink with little ears, is a sweet, funny design for anyone who loves the show's heart as much as its explosions.

The series premiered in 2007 and was followed by two compilation films, Childhood's End and The Lights in the Sky Are Stars, that retell the story with new animation. Fans who discovered it later often say it is the show they recommend when a friend needs a boost.

Pair any of these designs with a few bold posters and a red-and-black palette, and the room will feel ready to pierce the heavens.

Many fans keep a pair of pointed sunglasses on their shelf as a tribute to Kamina, and a rug with a bold drill or a spiral galaxy ties that whole corner together.

The spiral is the show's central symbol, from Simon's core drill to the galaxies, so a single spiral design says Gurren Lagann without any characters.
