About Ghost in the Shell Rugs
What makes us human?
In a future where people can replace their bodies with machines and connect their brains directly to the network, a cyborg special agent hunts hackers who can steal memories, and wonders whether her own mind, her ghost, is truly hers. Ghost in the Shell is one of the most influential works of science fiction ever made, and its ideas feel more relevant every year. A Ghost in the Shell-inspired rug brings its cool, cyberpunk look into a room: glowing circuit-board lines, cascading green code, a cyborg blueprint, a rainy neon city or a friendly blue spider-tank. Every design is printed into soft velvet and goes in the washing machine.
Ghost in the Shell-inspired designs
| Design | The look | Best in |
|---|---|---|
| Circuit lines | Glowing traces like a circuit board | Gaming setups, tech offices |
| Code rain | Cascading green characters on black | Gaming desks, dorms |
| Cyborg blueprint | A synthetic skeleton drawn like a schematic | Studios, offices |
| Rainy neon city | Canals, towers and signs in the rain | Home theaters, hallways |
| Spider-tank | A cheerful blue robot with spider legs | Kids' rooms, gaming corners |
| Camouflage shimmer | A rippling, see-through distortion pattern | Modern rooms, studios |
Circuit lines and code rain are the subtle choices for a gaming desk, while the rainy neon city is the cinematic one for a home theater.
The manga and the films
Ghost in the Shell began as a manga by Masamune Shirow in 1989. In 1995, director Mamoru Oshii and the studio Production I.G adapted it into a landmark animated film, following Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg officer of a counter-terrorism unit called Section 9, as she hunts a mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master. Its haunting, choral soundtrack by Kenji Kawai and its rain-soaked city have become iconic. The franchise continued with the acclaimed Stand Alone Complex television series in 2002, more films and series, and a live-action film in 2017. Its influence reaches far: the makers of The Matrix are often said to have shown the film to studio executives to explain what they wanted to make.
Circuit lines
Glowing traces running across a dark surface, like the paths on a circuit board, capture the series' blend of body and machine. A circuit-line rug in neon cyan, green or orange on black is a sleek design for a gaming setup or a tech office. Under a gaming or desk chair, choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put and lets the wheels roll. For more, see our gaming rugs.
Falling code
The film's opening shows streams of green digital characters on a dark screen, an image that later became famous worldwide. A rug of cascading green code on black is a classic cyberpunk design for a programmer's desk or a dorm, and it looks great with green LED lighting.
A cyborg blueprint
The film's opening credits show a synthetic body being built layer by layer. A blueprint rug of a cyborg skeleton, drawn in white technical lines on deep blue with measurements and notes, is a striking, intelligent design for a studio, an engineering office or a science lover's room. Our office and studio rugs page has more setups.
A rainy neon city
The film's city, inspired by Hong Kong, is a maze of canals, crowded markets, towering signs and endless rain. A rainy neon city rug, reflections of pink and blue light on wet streets, is a moody, cinematic design for a home theater or a hallway runner. A custom runner up to 10 ft long fits most hallways. For more futuristic cities, see our cyberpunk rugs.
A friendly spider-tank
In the television series, Section 9 uses small blue robot tanks with spider legs and childlike, curious artificial intelligence, and they're among the most loved characters. A rug of our own cheerful blue spider-legged robot is a sweet, fun design for a kid's room or a gaming corner, and a lighter, happier side of a serious series.
Camouflage shimmer
Agents in the series wear camouflage that makes them nearly invisible, leaving only a rippling distortion in the air. A rug with a subtle, shimmering distortion pattern in silver and gray is an abstract, modern design that suits any minimalist room.
The music
Kenji Kawai's score for the 1995 film blends taiko drums, bells and a choir singing in an ancient form of Japanese, creating a sound that feels both ancient and futuristic. For music lovers, a neon-city or circuit rug in a listening corner is a fitting companion to the soundtrack on vinyl. For more, see our vinyl record rugs.
Hong Kong as a future city
The filmmakers studied Hong Kong's dense streets, canals and signs for the film's city, giving it a lived-in, layered feel very different from shiny utopian futures. That messy, crowded vision of tomorrow became one of the most copied looks in science fiction.
Hallways
Down a hallway, a custom runner with a single glowing circuit path running its whole length, branching at the doors, is a clever, futuristic design. Choose Standard, which stays put as people walk by.
Real-world questions
When the manga appeared, the idea of a connected brain and a body that could be upgraded seemed far off. Today, prosthetics, implants, artificial intelligence and online identity raise many of the same questions the series asked: what makes a person a person, and what happens when memories can be edited? That's why it still inspires scientists, philosophers and artists.
Its influence
Alongside Akira, Ghost in the Shell helped define how the world imagines a high-tech future, influencing films, games and fashion. For another classic, see our Akira rugs, and for more, our Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop rugs.
Tech offices and studios
For programmers, engineers and designers, a circuit-line or blueprint rug under the desk is a cool, fitting touch, pairing well with a standing desk, multiple monitors and a few plants for balance.
Gaming setups and dorms
A code-rain or neon-city rug is a natural centerpiece for a cyberpunk gaming setup or a dorm room. Choose Standard on hard floors. For a softer bedroom rug, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m². Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Home theaters
For a home theater, a rainy neon-city or code-rain rug in front of the screen sets the mood for a night of classic science fiction, with blackout curtains and a deep sofa. Choose Premium for a soft floor to sprawl on. Our home theater rugs page has more ideas.
For older fans
The series is mature science fiction with violence and complex themes. The circuit lines, code rain and spider-tank are the most widely appealing designs.
Round rugs
A round rug with a glowing circular interface, a ring of circuitry or a camouflage shimmer is a sleek shape for a gaming corner. Our round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across.
Entryways
Just inside the front door, a small circuit or code rug is a cool, techy and futuristic welcome. Keep it indoors, out of the weather, and choose Standard for its grip on tile and wood.
Pairing with furniture
These rugs suit sleek, minimal rooms: black and gray furniture, glass and chrome, cool white or cyan lighting and a few leafy plants to soften the hard edges.
Colors
Ghost in the Shell-inspired designs look best in deep black and navy with neon cyan, green and pink, plus cool silver and gray for camouflage and blueprints.
Gifts
A Ghost in the Shell-inspired rug makes a great gift for a science-fiction fan, a programmer or a classic anime lover. The circuit lines are the most versatile; the spider-tank is the most fun and the most kid-friendly.

Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the neon stays sharp and vivid, wash after wash.
Stand Alone Complex and Section 9
In 2002, the series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex brought Major Motoko Kusanagi and Public Security Section 9 to television, with a smart, procedural style and a mystery at its center: the Laughing Man, a hacker who erases his face from every camera feed and replaces it with a smiling icon ringed by a line of text. The image became one of the most recognizable symbols in anime.
Section 9 itself is a great source of designs. Batou, the big, cybernetic-eyed partner, is devoted to his basset hound, a detail that plays a tender role in the film Innocence. The Tachikomas, Section 9's chatty spider-tanks with childlike voices, are endlessly curious about what it means to have a ghost. Togusa, the team's least modified member, keeps reminding them what being human looks like.
Those details translate into rugs that fans will read instantly. A simple smiling face inside a ring of text recalls the Laughing Man's hack, a cool, graphic design for a tech office or a gaming setup. A blue spider-tank, round and friendly, is a playful design for a teen's room, and a basset hound sleeping on a futuristic floor is a sweet, unexpected tribute to Batou.
The franchise has also included the 1995 film, its 2004 sequel, the Arise series and a 2017 live-action film. A rug that uses the cool greens, neon blues and rainy grays they share works across every version.
Paired with dark walls, a desk lamp and a city view at night, these designs make a room feel like a Section 9 safehouse, quiet, high-tech and watching.
For fans who love the franchise's philosophical side, these designs also start conversations about technology, memory and identity, the questions the Major keeps asking.
Cool greens and rainy grays also make these rugs restful in a home office, despite their high-tech subject.
