About Black Butler Rugs

A young earl, a perfect butler and a contract with a demon

In Victorian London, a 12-year-old earl runs his family's toy and sweets company by day and secretly investigates the city's darkest crimes for Queen Victoria. At his side is his butler, who can cook a perfect dessert, fix a ruined dinner party in minutes and defeat an army of assassins without wrinkling his coat. The butler is a demon, and he's serving the boy until the day he can claim his soul. Black Butler is an elegant, darkly funny gothic mystery. A Black Butler-inspired rug brings its style into a room: black feathers, a silver pocket watch, chess pieces, afternoon tea, a black cat, a candelabra or Victorian wallpaper. Every design is printed into soft velvet and goes in the washing machine.

The series

Black Butler, known in Japan as Kuroshitsuji, is a manga by Yana Toboso, serialized in Square Enix's Monthly GFantasy since 2006. It has been adapted into anime several times since 2008, first by A-1 Pictures and most recently by CloverWorks, along with films, stage musicals and live-action adaptations. Ciel Phantomhive, the young head of a noble family, made a contract with the demon Sebastian Michaelis after a tragedy, trading his soul for revenge. As the Queen's Watchdog, Ciel handles crimes the police can't touch, from serial killings to a mysterious circus and a luxury liner, while Sebastian handles everything else, perfectly.

Black feathers

The demon butler's arrival is often marked by drifting black feathers, a dark, graceful image that fits the series perfectly. A rug of black feathers floating across pale gray, scattered as if caught in a breeze, is an elegant, quietly gothic design for a bedroom or a living room, and a striking modern rug to anyone who hasn't seen the show. For a soft, plush finish, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m². For more, see our gothic rugs.

The pocket watch

A perfect butler keeps perfect time. A rug of a silver pocket watch with its lid open, chain curling across a dark background, is a handsome, classic design for a study, especially as a round rug, where the watch face fills the circle. Set the hands to a time that matters to you, the hour of a birth or a wedding, for a personal touch. Our round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across.

Chess

The young earl treats his enemies like pieces on a board, and chess appears throughout the series. A rug of an elegant chess king and a knight, the boy and his loyal protector, standing on a black-and-white checkered board, is a clever, sophisticated design for a game room or a study. For more, see our checkered rugs.

Afternoon tea

The butler serves a perfect afternoon tea every day, with cakes, scones and pastries he bakes himself. A rug of a tiered cake stand piled with tiny cakes, scones and cream, beside a delicate teacup, is a charming design for a kitchen or a dining room. In a kitchen, choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put on tile. For more, see our kitchen rugs.

A history of afternoon tea

Afternoon tea became fashionable in Victorian England in the 1840s, a light meal of tea, sandwiches and cakes to bridge the long gap between lunch and a late dinner. It grew into a social ritual among the upper classes, the same world the young earl belongs to, and it's still a beloved tradition today.

Tea table rugs

A round rug of a tea table seen from above, with cups, saucers, a teapot and a cake stand arranged around the edge, is a fun shape for a breakfast nook or a child's tea-party corner, and it goes in the washing machine after real tea parties.

The black cat

The demon butler has a well-known weakness: he adores cats and melts at the sight of one. A rug of a sleek black cat curled up on deep navy, with bright golden eyes, is a cozy, cute design for a bedroom or a reading nook, and a perfect gift for any cat lover. For more, see our cat rugs.

The candelabra

Candlelight fills the earl's manor. A rug of a silver candelabra with tall, flickering candles on black is a dramatic, romantic design for a dining room or a gothic bedroom.

Victorian wallpaper

The series' look is pure Victorian elegance: ornate wallpapers, rich fabrics and dark wood. A rug of an ornate repeating pattern in navy, black and gold is a luxurious design for a living room or a hallway runner, up to 10 ft long, and it reads as a classic heritage rug to anyone else. For more historic patterns, see our William Morris rugs.

Victorian London

The story is set in the late 1800s, an age of gaslights, top hats, horse-drawn carriages, crowded slums and grand estates. The series blends real history with its own dark fantasy, including famous crimes of the era and a young Queen's agent who moves between high society and London's underworld.

The household staff

The manor's other servants are a clumsy maid, a chef who cooks with explosives and a gardener who wrecks the garden, plus a calm old steward who mostly drinks tea. Their chaos, and the butler's flawless rescues, give the series much of its comedy. A tea service rug in a busy family kitchen is a funny nod to them.

Gothic sweets

The earl's company makes toys and sweets, and the series is full of desserts. A rug of elegant cakes, candies and macarons in dark chocolate, cream and berry tones is a sweet, sophisticated design for a kitchen or a café.

For teens and adults

Black Butler has dark themes, murder mysteries and violence, so it suits teens and adults. The black cat, the afternoon tea and the pocket watch are the most lighthearted designs.

Elegant bedrooms

A black feather or Victorian wallpaper rug brings refined, gothic elegance to a bedroom. Choose Standard on hard floors, or Premium for a plush feel. Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.

Cosplay and photo backdrops

For cosplayers, a Victorian wallpaper or checkered rug is an elegant backdrop for butler and earl photos at home, especially with a tea table and a candelabra in the frame.

Pairing with furniture

These rugs suit elegant, dark rooms: carved wood, velvet chairs, gilded frames, a grandfather clock, fine china and candles. A silver tray or teapot on a side table finishes the scene.

Colors

Black Butler-inspired designs look best in black and deep navy, silver and gold, with the soft pastels of cakes and the warm glow of candlelight.

Gifts

A Black Butler-inspired rug makes a great gift for a gothic soul, a tea lover or an anime fan. The black feathers are the most elegant; the black cat is the sweetest.

Care

Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so it stays as immaculate as a perfect butler, wash after wash.

The Funtom Company and Bitter Rabbit

By day, Ciel Phantomhive runs the Funtom Company, a toy and confectionery firm that is the most successful in Victorian England, at least in the story. Its mascot is Bitter Rabbit, a stuffed rabbit with a stitched smile and an eyepatch over one eye, a nod to Ciel himself, whose own eyepatch hides the mark of his contract with Sebastian.

Bitter Rabbit is an irresistible design for a rug: cute at first glance and a little sinister on the second, in soft pinks, creams and black. A pattern of Funtom-style sweets, wrapped candies, chocolates and tiny boxes, makes a playful kitchen or bedroom rug, and a vintage toyshop window with rocking horses and porcelain dolls brings the company's Victorian world into a quieter room.

These designs suit fans who love the series' lighter side, the elaborate desserts Sebastian prepares and the comic household staff, as much as its darker mysteries. Pair one with lace curtains, dark wood and a tea set on a shelf, and the room feels like a corner of the Phantomhive manor.

For a fan who collects plush toys, a Bitter Rabbit-inspired rug makes a natural base for a shelf display: stuffed rabbits and dolls above, the rug below picking up their pinks, creams and blacks. In a bedroom with dark wood furniture and lace curtains, the same design adds a touch of Victorian whimsy without looking childish. It also makes a clever gift for someone who loves the series' darkly comic tone, a cute toy rabbit that hides a little menace, just like the company that makes it and the young earl who runs it. Choose Premium for a soft bedside rug, or Standard if it will sit on a hard floor near a desk.
