About Lion Rugs
The king of the room
A lion rug brings strength and warmth into a room: a majestic lion's face with a golden mane on a round rug, a lion mid-roar, a pride resting under an acacia tree at sunset or a gold heraldic lion standing proud on a deep red ground. It's equally at home in a safari-themed nursery, a bold living room or the study of a proud Leo. Ours are printed edge to edge on soft velvet, so every strand of the mane comes out in rich detail, no real hide is used, and every rug goes in the washing machine.

Lion head portraits
A lion's face, framed by a great mane of gold, tawny and brown, is one of the most striking animal portraits there is. On a round rug, from 3.9 to 5.9 ft (120 to 180 cm), the mane fills the circle and the lion's calm, steady gaze becomes the room's focal point. It suits a living room with warm wood and leather, a study or an entryway. Our round rugs page shows each size in a room, and our shaped rugs can even follow the outline of the mane, in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm).
Lions in the wild
Lions are the only big cats that truly live in groups, called prides, usually made up of related females, their cubs and a few males. A male's mane is one of the most recognizable features in the animal kingdom, and a lion's roar can be heard up to about five miles away. Most wild lions live in the grasslands and savannas of sub-Saharan Africa, while a small population of Asiatic lions survives in India's Gir Forest. A safari rug with a pride at rest beneath an acacia tree, the sky glowing orange behind them, captures the calm before the hunt.
Heraldic lions
The lion has been a symbol of courage and royalty for thousands of years, and it appears on more coats of arms than almost any other animal. England's royal arms feature three lions, and heraldic lions, standing on their hind legs or walking with one paw raised, decorate flags, crests and shields across Europe. A heraldic lion rug, gold on deep red, navy or forest green, has a regal, traditional feel that suits a study, a library or a formal entryway.
Safari nurseries
Lions are one of the stars of the safari nursery, alongside elephants, giraffes and zebras. A friendly cartoon lion with a fluffy mane, in soft gold and cream, is cheerful and gentle. Choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², for tummy time; switch to Standard's non-slip back once your child is walking on a smooth floor. For more safari friends, see our elephant rugs, giraffe rugs and zebra rugs, and our kids and nursery rugs.
Leo
In the zodiac, Leo, the lion, is the sign of late July to late August, associated with confidence, generosity and a love of the spotlight. A Leo rug, a golden lion or the Leo constellation joined by fine gold lines on midnight blue, makes a fun, personal birthday gift. For more starry designs, see our celestial rugs.
Roaring lions
A lion mid-roar, mouth wide and mane flying, is pure power. It's a bold, dramatic choice for a game room, a gym, a man cave or a teenager's bedroom. In black and gold, it feels luxurious; in full color, it feels wild. Our man cave rugs page has more ideas.
Guardian lions
Stone lions have guarded important buildings for centuries. Two marble lions, later nicknamed Patience and Fortitude, have watched over the steps of the New York Public Library since 1911; four great bronze lions surround Nelson's Column in London's Trafalgar Square; and pairs of guardian lions stand outside temples and palaces across China. A guardian-lion rug at your own front door, just inside it, carries on that tradition of a watchful welcome.
Courage and family
Lions have long stood for courage, strength and protecting the people you love, which is why they make such meaningful gifts. A lion rug for a graduate starting out, a new father, a family home or a child who needs a little bravery at bedtime says more than a simple decoration.
Gold, black and earth tones
Lion designs look rich in warm, natural palettes: honey gold, caramel, rust and cream, set off by black or deep brown. For a glamorous look, choose a gold lion on black; for a calm, natural look, choose a soft savanna scene in sand and sage. Brass, leather and wood all pair beautifully.
Offices and studies
A lion head or heraldic lion rug under a desk gives a home office a confident, focused feel. Under a desk chair, choose Standard in 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft, which stays put and lets wheels roll freely.
Entryways
Just inside the front door, a lion rug makes a bold first impression. Keep it indoors, out of the weather, and choose Standard for its grip on tile and wood.
Living rooms
A lion rug under a coffee table gives a living room a warm, confident centerpiece. Pair it with leather, rattan or wood furniture, a few green plants and warm, earthy colors pulled from the mane. A 5×7 ft rug is our largest standard size; custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. For the softest feel underfoot, choose Premium. Our living room rugs page has more layouts.
Kids' rooms and playrooms
For older children, a safari scene with a pride of lions makes a great play rug for toy animals, and a cartoon lion makes a friendly bedroom rug. On a hard floor, choose Standard: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², so the rug stays put. Our kids play rugs page has more ideas.
Gifts
A lion rug makes a great gift for a Leo birthday, a safari-themed baby shower, a graduation or a new home. A lion head portrait is the safest choice for adults; a cartoon lion cub is the sweetest for little ones.
Lions and other big cats
Lions pair naturally with other big cat and animal designs. For more, see our tiger rugs, our leopard and cheetah designs in our animal print rugs and the full range of animal rugs.
Printed, not hide
Lions are a vulnerable species, and real lion skins have no place on a modern floor. Our lion rugs are printed on soft velvet, so you get the warmth and drama of the design with no animal involved, and a rug you can simply put in the washing machine.
Bedrooms
A lion rug beside the bed brings warmth and a sense of quiet strength to a bedroom. A calm savanna scene suits a grown-up room with natural linen and wood; a gold lion on navy suits a richer, more traditional bedroom; a cuddly cartoon lion suits a child's. For the softest feel, choose Premium. Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Your own lion
Want a lion in your family's colors, a heraldic lion with your initials or a Leo design with a birth date? Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, or cut it to shape. Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned, so please check names and dates before ordering.
Standard or Premium
Standard is best for entryways, playrooms, game rooms and anywhere with a hard or slippery floor, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best in living rooms, bedrooms and nurseries. Both are printed the same way, so golden manes stay rich and warm, and both go in the washing machine.
Sizes, shipping and returns
Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.
Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the mane stays golden and the eyes stay bright, wash after wash.
Lions that guard famous places
Lions have watched over buildings and squares for centuries. Outside the New York Public Library's main branch on Fifth Avenue sit two marble lions, nicknamed Patience and Fortitude by Mayor Fiorello La Guardia in the 1930s for the qualities he thought New Yorkers needed. In London, four bronze lions designed by Sir Edwin Landseer have guarded the base of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square since 1867, and two bronze lions have flanked the entrance to the Art Institute of Chicago since 1894.
Venice adopted the winged lion of Saint Mark as its symbol, often shown with an open book, and it appears on flags, columns and buildings across the city and its former territories. In China, pairs of stone guardian lions stand at the gates of palaces and temples, a male with a ball under his paw and a female with a cub.
Those lions inspire rugs with a sense of history. A carved stone lion in pale gray, reclining with calm dignity, suits a library, a study or an entryway, a guardian at the door. A winged lion in gold on deep red brings a Venetian richness to a living room, and a pair of guardian lions facing each other makes a balanced, symbolic design for a front hall.
For readers, a rug of a library lion surrounded by books is a sweet gift, especially for a new graduate or anyone who spent childhood afternoons on the steps of a big city library.
