About Cat Rugs

Rugs for cat people

A cat rug is for anyone whose life revolves, at least a little, around a cat: a rug cut to the shape of a cat curled up asleep, a round rug with a cat's face and two pointed ears, a sleek black cat, a pattern of tabbies and tuxedos, or, best of all, a portrait of your own cat printed in velvet. Ours are printed edge to edge, so fur markings and whiskers come out with fine detail, and every rug goes in the washing machine. That last part matters, because if you love cats, you probably live with one.

A rug of your own cat

The most special cat rug is a portrait of your own cat. Send us a clear photo, and our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, as a round rug up to 5.9 ft (180 cm), or cut to your cat's outline as a shaped rug. Add their name if you like. It's a wonderful gift for a cat lover, and a meaningful keepsake of a cat who has passed. A few tips for the photo: good natural light, your cat filling most of the frame, and their eyes in focus. Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned, so please check the photo and the spelling of the name before ordering.

Cat-shaped rugs

A rug cut to the outline of a cat, curled into a ball, stretched out in a sunbeam or sitting tall with its tail around its feet, looks wonderfully natural on a floor. Our shaped rugs come in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). A small one beside a bed is sweet; a large one in front of a sofa is a statement. More than one person has looked twice, thinking a real cat was lying there.

Round cat face rugs

A round rug with a cat's face, eyes, nose, whiskers and two triangular ears extending past the circle, is cheerful and playful, a favorite for children's rooms and teen bedrooms. In a soft color, it's gentle enough for a nursery; in black, it's graphic and cool. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across. Our round rugs page shows each size in a room.

Black cats

Black cats have a complicated reputation: in parts of the United States they're linked with bad luck and witches, while in Britain and Japan a black cat crossing your path has long been considered lucky. Either way, a black cat is one of the most striking cat designs there is: a sleek silhouette with bright yellow or green eyes on a cream or purple ground. It suits a modern bedroom, an entryway or a witchy, moody room, and it's a natural for October. Our Halloween rugs have more spooky designs.

Coats and markings

Every cat lover has a favorite coat, and each has its own story. Classic tabbies carry a distinctive M-shaped marking on their foreheads. Tuxedo cats wear a crisp black coat with a white chest and paws, as if dressed for dinner. Calico cats, with their patches of orange, black and white, are almost always female, a quirk of feline genetics, while most orange tabbies are male. Siamese cats have pale bodies with darker ears, faces, paws and tails. A rug drawn in your favorite coat, realistic or sweetly simplified, is a lovely nod to the cat in your life, even without a custom portrait.

Lucky cats

The maneki-neko, the Japanese beckoning cat with one paw raised, is a symbol of good fortune often placed at shop entrances to welcome customers. A lucky cat rug at your front door or in a home office brings that cheerful welcome indoors, and its red, gold and white colors are bright and happy.

Cats in art

Cats have inspired artists for centuries. The ancient Egyptians honored cats and the cat-headed goddess Bastet. In nineteenth-century Japan, the woodblock artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi filled his prints with cats, and in Victorian England, Louis Wain became famous for his wide-eyed, increasingly colorful cats. A cat design inspired by one of these styles, an elegant Egyptian cat, an ukiyo-e cat or a bright, patterned Wain-style cat, makes a rug that feels like art.

Rugs in a home with cats

If you live with cats, practicality matters as much as the design:

  • It's washable. Hair, litter tracked from the box and the occasional hairball come out on a gentle, cold cycle.
  • Pet hair lifts off easily. Vacuum on a low setting between washes.
  • It stays put. On smooth floors, choose Standard: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², so the rug doesn't slide when your cat sprints across it.
  • It has a short cut pile. There are no long loops for claws to catch, as there are in some woven rugs, though a determined cat may still give it a scratch now and then.

A sunny nap spot

Cats always find the warmest, softest spot in the house. A small round rug, 2.6 or 3.3 ft (80 or 100 cm), by a sunny window or under a cat tree makes a cozy nap spot, and it protects the floor beneath. Choose Premium for this, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², the softest we make.

Cat rugs for the bedroom

A cat rug beside the bed is the first thing you'll step on in the morning, perhaps right after your cat has woken you up for breakfast. A cat-shaped rug, a round face rug or a cozy pattern of sleeping cats all work well. Our bedroom rugs page has more ideas.

Cat mats by the door and in the bathroom

A cat design inside the front door, a black cat, a lucky cat or a paw print trail, makes a fun welcome. Our rugs are for indoor use, so keep it inside rather than out in the weather. In the bathroom, a small cat rug by the vanity is a cute touch; it's a printed velvet rug, not a quick-drying bath mat, so keep it out of the splash zone. For both, choose Standard for its grip.

Paw prints

A trail of little paw prints wandering across a rug is a subtle, sweet design for a hallway, a kitchen or a child's room. It says cat lover without a single whisker, and it works in any color.

Kids' rooms and nurseries

Children love cats, and cat rugs make sweet designs for a child's room or a nursery: a round kitten face, a sleepy cat in pastel colors or a pattern of playful kittens. Choose Premium for floor play, and Standard's non-slip back once your child is running on a smooth floor. Our kids and nursery rugs have more ideas.

Famous cats

If your favorite cat is a famous one, we have pages for them too: Hello Kitty, the orange tabby of the game Stray, the lasagna-loving Garfield and the cartoon cat Pusheen.

Cats and dogs

If your home has both, our dog rugs page covers dog portraits and designs, and a custom rug can put your cat and dog side by side. For more animal designs, see our animal rugs, and for soft, sweet styles, our cute rugs.

Standard or Premium

Standard is best on hard or slippery floors, by doors, in kitchens and bathrooms and under desk chairs, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best beside a bed, in a nursery or as a nap spot. Both are printed the same way, so whiskers and fur markings stay crisp, and both go in the washing machine.

Sizes, shipping and returns

Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and cat-shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.

Care

Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes to lift pet hair, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the colors stay bright, however many naps happen on it.

Breeds with a look of their own

Some cat breeds are so distinctive that a rug can show them in a single silhouette. Siamese cats have cream bodies with dark points on the ears, face, paws and tail, plus bright blue eyes. Maine Coons are big and shaggy, with tufted ears and a plumed tail. Scottish Folds have small ears that fold forward, giving them an owlish face, while the hairless Sphynx is all wrinkles and huge ears. Bengals carry leopard-like rosettes, and Russian Blues have a silvery gray coat with green eyes.

Choose the breed that lives with you, or the one you dream of. A Siamese in cream and chocolate makes an elegant rug for a living room, a Bengal's spots work as a subtle animal print, and a round Scottish Fold face is irresistibly sweet in a child's bedroom. For a multi-cat home, a row of different breeds sitting side by side, each with its own coat, becomes a family portrait without photos.

Breed rugs also make thoughtful gifts for breeders, cat show regulars and anyone who volunteers at a shelter, a way to celebrate the cats they care for every day.

FAQ

Questions about Cat Rugs

Can you make a rug of my own cat?

Yes. Send a clear photo of your tabby, tuxedo or black cat and we'll print it at any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, as a round portrait or cut to your cat's outline. Pet portraits can't be returned.

Do you make cat-shaped rugs?

Yes. A cat curled asleep, stretched out or sitting upright, cut along its silhouette, from 2.6×2.6 ft (80×80 cm) by the bed to 5.2×5.9 ft (160×180 cm) in the living room.

Are your rugs good for homes with cats?

Yes. Cat hair lifts off with a low vacuum, the rugs go in the washing machine, and Standard's non-slip back stays put when cats zoom across it.

Will my cat scratch the rug?

The short cut pile has no long loops for claws to catch, but a determined cat may still scratch it now and then.

Do you make black cat rugs?

Yes. Sleek black cat silhouettes with yellow or green eyes on cream, purple or other colors, for bedrooms, entryways and Halloween.

Can I use a cat rug as a door mat?

Just inside the front door, yes; outdoors, no. A black cat or lucky cat rug greets guests in the entryway, and Standard's faux leather back holds it on the floor, but rain and mud are beyond what it's made for.

Which rug makes a good nap spot for my cat?

An 2.6 or 3.3 ft (80 or 100 cm) round rug in Premium, the softest we make, by a sunny window or under a cat tree.

How do I wash a cat rug?

Gentle cold cycle, then dry it flat. Vacuum on low between washes to lift cat hair; the paw prints and cat faces stay bright.
