About Coastal Rugs

The seaside, without the sand in the rug

A coastal rug brings the light and calm of the shore into a room: soft blues and sandy neutrals, the rhythm of waves, the curve of a seashell or the crisp navy stripes of a sailboat. It's one of the easiest ways to make a room feel relaxed and airy, even far from the water. Ours are printed edge to edge on soft velvet, so every shade of blue comes out clear, and the whole rug goes in your washing machine, which, if your home is near a beach, you'll appreciate every summer.

Classic coastal and coastal grandmother styles mix easily with white furniture and natural wood, while Mediterranean blues and tropical greens bring stronger color.

Blue and white

Blue and white is the heart of coastal style, and it never seems to go out of fashion. Wide stripes feel like a beach umbrella; thin stripes feel like a sailor's shirt; soft watercolor waves feel like a calm morning at the shore. A blue and white rug brightens a room with white walls and pale wood, and it looks fresh with linen sofas and rattan chairs. For checks in blue and white, see our checkered rugs.

Sandy neutrals

Not every coastal room is blue. Sand, driftwood, oatmeal and soft white give a quieter beach-house feel, like a weathered boardwalk or a dune at dawn. A neutral coastal rug with a subtle wave or rope pattern suits a calm living room or bedroom, and it pairs well with woven baskets, jute, linen and plenty of natural light.

Nautical style

Nautical style borrows from boats and harbors: navy and white stripes with a touch of red, anchors, coiled rope, ship's wheels, compass roses and the bright, geometric signal flags sailors use to spell out messages at sea. A nautical rug suits a boy's bedroom, a lake house, a den or a preppy living room. A compass rose on a round rug is especially striking, and a row of signal flags can even spell out a name, through a custom rug.

Seashells, starfish and sand dollars

Seashells are the most beloved beach motif of all: scallops, conchs, starfish and sand dollars in soft pinks, creams and corals. A seashell rug, a scatter of shells on sand or a single large scallop cut to shape, is a charming design for a beach house, a bathroom or a child's room. Our shaped rugs can cut a scallop shell or a starfish to its outline, in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm).

Waves and the ocean

Waves give a rug movement: soft curving lines in blue and white, a classic Japanese-style great wave or an aerial view of turquoise water meeting the sand. They're calming in a bedroom and dramatic in a living room. For more ocean designs, see our ocean rugs, and for the creatures of the sea, our whale rugs.

Mediterranean blues

The coasts of the Mediterranean have their own palette: the whitewashed walls and blue domes of the Greek islands, the lemons and sunlit terraces of the Amalfi Coast, and the blue and white painted tiles of Portugal. A Mediterranean-inspired rug, a cobalt tile pattern or lemons on white, brings that bright, sunny feel to a kitchen, a dining room or a sunroom, and it pairs beautifully with terracotta pots and olive trees.

Lighthouses and harbors

For a quieter maritime look, a lighthouse on a rocky point, a row of fishing boats in a harbor or a simple striped buoy makes a gentle, storybook design. It suits a child's room, a cozy den or a hallway in a seaside cottage, and it pairs naturally with nautical stripes.

Surf and summer

For a laid-back surf-shack look, think bright sunsets, palm trees, retro surfboards and warm oranges and turquoise. A surf-inspired rug suits a teen's bedroom, a beach rental or a family room by the coast. Our surfboard rugs page has more.

In the living room

A coastal area rug under a coffee table sets the tone for the whole room. A 5×7 ft rug in soft blue stripes or a sandy wave pattern suits most beach-house living rooms; custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Pair it with a white or linen sofa, a few blue and white cushions, driftwood or rattan and a big glass jar of shells. For the softest feel underfoot, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m². Our living room rugs page has more layouts.

In the bedroom

A soft coastal rug at the foot of the bed or beside it makes a bedroom feel like a vacation. Pale blue waves, a watercolor shoreline or a quiet sandy neutral are restful choices, especially with white bedding and a linen throw. Our bedroom rugs page has more ideas.

Kitchens and bathrooms

A small blue and white rug in front of the kitchen sink or the bathroom vanity brings a breezy, seaside feel to hard-surfaced rooms. Choose Standard: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which grips the floor. For bathrooms, one honest note: our rugs are printed velvet, not thick, quick-drying bath mats, so place one by the vanity or the door, rather than right where you step out of the shower. Our kitchen rugs have more ideas.

Beach houses and vacation rentals

If you own a beach house or a rental, a washable rug is a practical choice: sand, sunscreen and salty feet come out in the wash between guests. Choose Standard for entryways and kitchens, where its non-slip back stays put, and keep a spare rug so one can be washed and dried while the other is down.

Indoor rugs, not beach mats

Many people searching for a beach rug are looking for something to lay on the sand. To be clear, our rugs are made for indoor use: they're perfect inside a beach house, but they aren't designed for the beach itself, a deck or a porch exposed to rain and sun. Use them just inside the door, where they'll catch the sand on the way in.

Lake houses and cabins

Coastal style isn't only for the ocean. In a lake house, a nautical stripe, a rope pattern or a soft blue wave feels just as right, especially with wood paneling, a canoe paddle on the wall and a stack of board games. A lake-house rug with your lake's name or coordinates, through a custom rug, makes a lovely keepsake.

Kids' rooms

Children love the sea: whales, fish, sailboats, lighthouses and seashells all make cheerful designs for a nursery or a child's room. Choose Premium for floor play and Standard's non-slip back once your child is running on a smooth floor. Every rug goes in the washing machine.

Round coastal rugs

A round coastal rug, a compass rose, a sand dollar or concentric blue waves, is a lovely choice for an entryway, a reading nook or under a round dining table. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across. Our round rugs page shows each size in a room.

Your own coastline

Want a rug with the map of your favorite beach, your lake's coordinates or a photo of the view from your porch? Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, or cut it to shape. Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned.

Standard or Premium

Standard is best for entryways, kitchens, bathrooms, rentals and anywhere with a hard or slippery floor, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best in living rooms and bedrooms. Both are printed the same way, so blues stay clear and whites stay bright, and both go in the washing machine.

Sizes, shipping and returns

Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.

Care

Shake out sand before washing. Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the blues stay as clear as the sea, summer after summer.

Sea glass, driftwood and rope

Beachcombers know that the shoreline offers its own color palette. Sea glass, fragments of old bottles tumbled smooth by waves, comes mostly in white, green and brown, while cobalt blue, aqua and especially red are rare finds. Driftwood bleaches to silver gray, and old rope fades to soft beige and blue.

A sea-glass rug, frosted pebbles of aqua, seafoam and white scattered across sand, captures that palette in a calm, modern way that suits a living room or a bathroom by the vanity. A driftwood pattern, with weathered gray grain, brings a natural texture to a beach house hallway, and a design of nautical knots, bowline, reef knot and figure eight, in navy rope on cream, gives a den or a boy's room a seafaring feel.

These designs work far from the coast too. In a city apartment or a lake house, they bring a sense of a summer beach walk without seashell clichés, especially when paired with linen, rattan and pale wood.

For a family that spends summers at the same beach, a sea-glass or rope-knot rug can become a tradition: rolled out each June at the cottage and stored each September, it carries the memory of every summer spent there. Pair it with a jar of real sea glass on the windowsill, and the house feels like the shore.

FAQ

Questions about Coastal Rugs

Are your coastal rugs machine washable?

Yes. Shake out the sand first, then run it through a gentle cold cycle and dry it flat. Stripes, shells and sea blues come out clean, and a low vacuum between washes keeps grit away.

Can I use a coastal rug on the beach or a porch?

No. Our rugs are for indoor use. They're perfect inside a beach house or just inside the door, but not on the sand or an exposed deck.

What's the difference between coastal and nautical style?

Coastal is soft blues, whites and sandy neutrals with waves and shells; nautical is crisp navy and white stripes with anchors, rope and red accents.

Do you make seashell or starfish shaped rugs?

Yes. A scallop shell or a starfish can be cut to its outline, from 2.6×2.6 ft (80×80 cm) for a beach-house doorway to 5.2×5.9 ft (160×180 cm) for a sunroom.

Are coastal rugs good for vacation rentals?

Yes. Sand, sunscreen and spills come out in the wash between guests. Choose Standard for entryways and kitchens.

Which coastal rug suits a living room?

A 5×7 ft rug in soft blue stripes or a sandy wave pattern, with a white or linen sofa and rattan or driftwood accents.

Can I use a coastal rug in the bathroom?

Yes, by the vanity or the door, in Standard for its grip. A beach or nautical design suits a bathroom; it's velvet, not a quick-drying bath mat.

Can I get a rug with my beach or lake's coordinates?

Yes. The coordinates, a map or the name of your beach, lake or harbor town can be printed on any custom size up to 5′11″ × 10′. As a personal piece, it can't be returned.
