About Surfboard Rugs
Ride the floor
A surfboard rug brings the beach indoors, wherever you live: a rug cut to the outline of a board, a vintage longboard with a bold stripe down the middle, a breaking wave or a retro sunset over the water. It's a natural fit for a surf shack, a beach house or a teen's room with boards on the wall. Ours are printed edge to edge on soft velvet, so stripes and waves come out crisp, and every rug goes in the washing machine, which, if sand is part of your life, you'll appreciate.
Board-shaped rugs
A rug cut to the shape of a surfboard, with its rounded nose and tapered tail, is the most fun surf rug of all. Our shaped rugs come in sizes up to 5.2×5.9 ft (160×180 cm), so a board shape fits neatly within that, about 5.2 ft (160 cm) long, perfect beside a bed or in front of a dresser. For a longer board, we can print the board on a long, narrow custom rug, up to 10 ft long, which makes a great hallway runner. Choose Standard for a hallway: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put as people walk by.

Where surfing began
Surfing began in ancient Polynesia and flourished in Hawaii, where riding waves, known as heʻe nalu, or wave sliding, was part of daily life and culture long before Europeans arrived. In the early twentieth century, the Hawaiian Olympic swimmer Duke Kahanamoku, often called the father of modern surfing, introduced the sport to California and Australia. Surfing debuted as an Olympic sport at the Tokyo Games held in 2021. A rug inspired by Hawaiian surf history, a wooden board, hibiscus flowers and a turquoise wave, is a lovely nod to where it all started.
Longboards and shortboards
Early boards were long and heavy, carved from solid wood. In the 1950s, foam and fiberglass made boards lighter, and the classic longboard, usually nine feet or more, became the icon of California surf culture. In the late 1960s, the shortboard revolution brought smaller, faster boards built for sharp turns. A longboard rug feels relaxed and vintage; a shortboard design with bright graphics feels modern and energetic.
California surf culture
The 1950s and 60s turned surfing into an American pop culture phenomenon: surf music, beach movies, woodie station wagons with boards on the roof and the sun-bleached look of Malibu and Huntington Beach. A retro surf rug, a sunset in orange and pink, a woodie wagon or a vintage surf-poster style, captures that era. For more beach style, see our coastal rugs, and for more retro designs, our retro rugs.
Hawaiian prints
Hibiscus flowers, palm fronds and bold tropical leaves, the patterns of classic Hawaiian shirts, make a cheerful surf rug for a bedroom or a sunroom. They pair beautifully with rattan, white walls and lots of plants. For more tropical leaves and flowers, see our botanical rugs and flower rugs.
Waves
A curling wave, in deep blue and white foam, is the purest surf design: simple, dynamic and calming at the same time. A Japanese-style great wave adds drama; a soft watercolor wave adds calm. For more ocean designs, see our ocean rugs.
Famous breaks
Every surfer has a dream wave. Hawaii's Banzai Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu is famous for its powerful, hollow barrels; Mavericks, off the coast of Northern California, draws big-wave surfers to some of the largest waves on Earth; Malibu's Surfrider Beach has long, gentle point-break waves loved by longboarders; and Huntington Beach is known to many simply as Surf City. A rug with a favorite break's name and coordinates, through a custom rug, is a meaningful gift for a surfer.
Stoke
Surfers have a word for the pure joy of riding a wave: stoke. A surf rug is a small daily dose of it, a reminder of salt air, early-morning sessions and the feeling of paddling out. It's the kind of decoration that makes a room feel happier without trying too hard.
Gear rooms and garages
Many surfers keep a corner of the garage or a mudroom for boards, wetsuits and wax. A durable, washable rug under the board rack or by the door catches drips and sand, and a surf design makes the space feel like part of the hobby. Choose Standard for its grip, and wash it whenever it needs it.
Sun-faded colors
The best surf rooms look as if the sun has softened everything: sand, faded teal, coral, mustard, sky blue and weathered white. Choose a rug in two or three of those colors, then repeat them in cushions, towels and art. Bright neon surf graphics suit a teen's room; faded tones suit a living room or a beach rental.
Gifts for surfers
A surf rug is a great gift for a surfer, a beach lover, a family with a summer house or a teenager who dreams of their first board. A board-shaped rug is the safest choice; a custom rug with their name or their favorite break is the most personal.
The surf shack
A surf shack, whether it's a real beach cottage or a bedroom that dreams of one, is all about relaxed, sun-faded style: whitewashed wood, a few boards on hooks, a hammock chair, woven baskets, faded posters and a rug underfoot. A surfboard or wave rug pulls it all together. In a beach house, choose Standard, which stays put and goes in the washing machine after sandy days.
Teen bedrooms
For a teenager who surfs, skates or just loves the beach, a surf rug is an easy way to give a bedroom personality. A board-shaped rug beside the bed, a retro sunset rug in the middle of the room or a wave design under the desk chair all work well. For the softest feel underfoot, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m². Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Kids' rooms
A colorful board rack or a cartoon wave makes a cheerful rug for a child's room, especially in a beach-loving family. On a hard floor, choose Standard so it stays put, and remember that every rug goes in the washing machine. Our kids play rugs page has more ideas.
Lake houses and landlocked surfers
You don't need an ocean to love surf style. Lake houses, cabins and apartments far from the coast all welcome a surf rug as a reminder of summer trips and the hope of the next one. Wakeboarders and paddleboarders love the look too.
Streetwear and surf
Surf and streetwear grew up together: some of the very first streetwear labels started out selling T-shirts alongside surfboards in Southern California. If you love that connection, see our Stüssy-inspired rugs.
Entryways
Just inside the front door of a beach house, a small surf rug catches sand and salt water before they reach the rest of the house. Our rugs are for indoor use, so keep it inside the door rather than out on the deck, and choose Standard for its grip on tile and wood.
Your own board
Want a rug of your own board, with its colors and graphics, your name on the deck or the name of your favorite break? Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, or cut it to shape. Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned.
Standard or Premium
Standard is best in beach houses, hallways, entryways and on hard floors, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best in bedrooms and lounges. Both are printed the same way, so blues stay bright and stripes stay crisp, and both go in the washing machine.
Sizes, shipping and returns
Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and shaped rugs, including board shapes, up to 5.2×5.9 ft (160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′, including long, narrow board runners. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.
Care
Shake out any sand before washing. Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the colors stay sunny and the stripes stay crisp, wave after wave.
Board anatomy
Every surfboard has the same basic parts. The nose is the front tip, rounded on longboards and pointed on shortboards. The tail is the back end, and its shape, squash, round, pin or swallow, changes how the board turns. The rails are the edges, the deck is the top where you stand, and the bottom carries one or more fins that keep the board stable. Many boards also have a stringer, a thin strip of wood running down the center for strength.
Those details make a fun, educational rug for surfers and beginners alike. A board drawn like a shaper's diagram, with each part labeled in neat lettering, suits a surf shack, a garage gear room or a teen's bedroom. A row of tail shapes, side by side, makes a clean, graphic design for anyone who argues about swallow tails versus squash.
For a surfer, a rug in the shape and colors of their own favorite board, with its dimensions written along the stringer, makes a proud, personal gift.
