About Celestial Rugs
The night sky, at your feet
A celestial rug brings the magic of the night sky indoors: a golden sun and a sleepy crescent moon on midnight blue, the moon's phases marching across a runner, constellations joined by fine gold lines, or a star cut to shape beside the bed. It's a favorite for dreamy bedrooms, nurseries, reading nooks and meditation corners, and for anyone who likes to look up at night. Ours are printed edge to edge on soft velvet, so fine golden lines and deep blues come out crisp, and every rug goes in the washing machine.
Celestial designs
| Design | The look | Best in |
|---|---|---|
| Sun and moon | A golden sun and a crescent moon with faces, on midnight blue | Bedrooms, living rooms |
| Moon phases | The moon from new to full in a row or a circle | Hallways, bedrooms, runners |
| Constellations | Stars joined by fine lines, like a star chart | Bedrooms, nurseries, studies |
| Zodiac wheel | The twelve signs around a circle | Round rugs, reading nooks |
| Star- and moon-shaped rugs | A single star or crescent cut to shape | Nurseries, kids' rooms, bedsides |
| Antique star map | Old celestial charts with figures and gold | Studies, libraries |
Moon phases make a natural hallway runner, with the moon waxing from one end to the other as you walk.
The sun and the moon
The sun and moon together, often drawn with gentle faces in the style of old woodcuts, tarot cards and folk art, are the most beloved celestial design. A golden sun beside a silver or gold crescent moon on deep midnight blue feels both magical and calm, the balance of day and night. It suits a boho bedroom, a living room with warm wood and plants or a meditation space. A round sun-and-moon rug, the two faces meeting in the middle, is especially striking. Our round rugs page shows each size in a room.
Moon phases
As the moon orbits the Earth, we see it go through its phases, from a dark new moon to waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous and full, then back again through waning gibbous, last quarter and waning crescent, about every 29.5 days. A moon-phase design, the moon's changing shapes in a row across a runner or in a circle on a round rug, is elegant and quietly symbolic. It looks beautiful above a bed's foot or down a hallway, through a custom runner up to 10 ft long.
Constellations and star charts
Since 1922, astronomers have recognized 88 official constellations covering the whole sky, from the Big Dipper, part of Ursa Major, to Orion the Hunter and the Southern Cross. A constellation rug, stars joined by thin gold lines on navy, is a refined, grown-up design for a bedroom or a study, and a gentle astronomy lesson for a child. In the seventeenth century, mapmakers produced spectacular illustrated star atlases with gods and creatures drawn among the stars; an antique star-map rug in that style, with its swirling figures and gold details, suits a library or an office.
The zodiac
The twelve signs of the zodiac, Aries through Pisces, arranged around a circle, make a natural design for a round rug. Each sign has its own symbol and constellation, and a zodiac rug is a fun, personal gift: you can highlight a birthday sign, or add a name beneath it through our custom rugs. It suits a reading nook, a bedroom or a meditation corner with crystals and candles.
Star- and moon-shaped rugs
A rug cut to the shape of a five-pointed star or a crescent moon is one of the sweetest rugs for a nursery or a child's bedroom. Our shaped rugs come in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). A small gold star beside the crib or a soft white moon by the bed makes bedtime feel a little more magical.
Nurseries
A celestial nursery, a sleepy moon, soft stars and clouds in navy, grey and gold or in gentle pastels, is calm, timeless and suits any baby. Pair it with a starry mobile and a soft night light. Choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², for tummy time and first crawls; switch to Standard's non-slip back once your child is walking on a smooth floor. Our kids and nursery rugs have more ideas.
Dreamy bedrooms
For a grown-up bedroom, a celestial rug sets a dreamy, restful mood. Midnight blue and gold is the classic pairing, with velvet cushions, brass lamps and plenty of plants. Black and gold feels more dramatic and witchy; cream and gold feels light and airy. A 4×6 or 5×7 ft rug at the foot of the bed, or a moon-shaped rug beside it, works well. Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Meditation and yoga corners
The sun, the moon and the stars have long been symbols of balance, cycles and calm, which makes a celestial rug a natural base for a meditation or yoga corner. A round sun-and-moon or zodiac rug, a floor cushion, a candle and a few plants are all you need. For more designs for a calm space, see our meditation rugs and zen and spiritual rugs.
Following the stars
For thousands of years, people have read the sky to keep time and find their way. Ancient builders aligned monuments like Stonehenge with the sunrise and sunset of the solstices, and sailors navigated by Polaris, the North Star, which sits almost directly above the North Pole and barely moves through the night. A rug with a compass rose beneath the North Star, or the solstice sun rising over standing stones, is a beautiful nod to that long history of looking up.
Kids' rooms
Children love the night sky, especially at bedtime. A star-scattered rug, a smiling moon or a glow of constellations makes a bedroom feel cozy and safe as the lights go down. Pair it with glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling and a favorite bedtime book about the moon. On a hard floor, choose Standard so the rug stays put.
Gold, brass and warm light
Celestial rugs come alive with warm metallic accents. Brass lamps, gold-framed mirrors, candleholders and a few touches of mustard or ochre pick up the golden suns and stars in the rug, while midnight blue walls or bedding deepen the night-sky feeling. Soft, warm lighting makes the whole room glow in the evening.
Gifts
A celestial rug makes a thoughtful gift for a new baby, a birthday, a wedding or a friend who loves astrology and stargazing. A sun-and-moon rug is the safest choice; a custom star map of a meaningful date is the most personal gift of all.
Witchy and boho styles
Celestial motifs are at the heart of witchy and boho decor: tarot-style suns and moons, crystals, dried flowers, candles and macramé. A celestial rug ties those pieces together. For a darker take, see our gothic rugs, which include moths and moon phases on black.
Star maps for special dates
One of the most meaningful celestial rugs is a map of the night sky as it appeared over a particular place on a particular night: the evening a child was born, a wedding night or the night you met. Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, with the date and place written beneath. Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned, so please double-check dates and names before ordering.
Entryways and hallways
Just inside the front door, a small sun-and-moon or star rug gives guests a warm, magical welcome. Down a hallway, a custom runner with the moon's phases or a band of constellations turns a plain corridor into a path under the stars. Choose Standard for both, which stays put on hard floors, and keep entry rugs indoors, out of the weather.
Beyond the night sky
If you love the planets and galaxies too, see our space rugs, and for soft clouds and sky, our cloud rugs.
Standard or Premium
Standard is best for hallways, entryways, under desk chairs and anywhere with a hard or slippery floor, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best in bedrooms, nurseries and meditation corners. Both are printed the same way, so golden lines stay fine and blues stay deep, and both go in the washing machine.
Sizes, shipping and returns
Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and star- and moon-shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.
Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so your stars keep shining and the gold stays warm, wash after wash.
Eclipses and meteor showers
The sky puts on its best shows on a schedule. Meteor showers return every year: the Perseids peak in mid-August, when warm nights make them easy to watch, and the Geminids peak in mid-December, often with even more shooting stars. Solar eclipses are rarer. On April 8, 2024, a total eclipse crossed North America from Mexico to Canada, and the next total eclipses visible from the contiguous United States arrive in August 2044 and August 2045.
Those events translate into striking rugs. An eclipse design, a black disc ringed by the pale glow of the corona, makes a dramatic round rug for a living room or a home theater. A meteor shower, streaks of light falling diagonally across a deep navy sky, suits a bedroom ceiling of glow-in-the-dark stars and a child who wants to stay up for the Perseids.
For a personal keepsake, a rug can mark the night you watched an eclipse or a meteor shower together, with the date and place in small letters beneath the sky, a reminder of looking up together.
