About Space Rugs
The universe on your floor
A space rug opens a window onto the universe: the planets circling the Sun, a galaxy swirling in purple and blue, the cratered surface of the Moon or a rocket blasting off into the stars. It's a favorite for children who dream of being astronauts, for teens and gamers who love a dark, cosmic look and for anyone who likes to look up at night. Ours are printed edge to edge on soft velvet, so deep blacks and glowing nebulas come out rich and vivid, and every rug goes in the washing machine.
Space designs
| Design | The look | Best in |
|---|---|---|
| Solar system | The Sun and eight planets in orbit | Kids' rooms, classrooms, round rugs |
| Galaxy and nebula | Swirling clouds of purple, blue and pink stars | Teen rooms, game rooms, bedrooms |
| The Moon | Grey craters and shadows on a round rug | Bedrooms, reading corners |
| Earth from space | The blue planet against black | Offices, living rooms |
| Rockets and astronauts | Playful launches, spacewalks and alien planets | Kids' rooms, playrooms |
| Mars and planet surfaces | Red dunes, rocks and distant horizons | Game rooms, sci-fi rooms |
The solar system design doubles as a lesson in the order of the planets, while the galaxy and nebula suit an older child or a teen.
The solar system
A solar system rug, the Sun at the center and the planets in their orbits around it, is one of the best rugs for a curious child, and it's a perfect fit for a round rug. There are eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006, though plenty of fans still include it. Jupiter is the largest, big enough to fit more than a thousand Earths inside; Saturn has the famous rings; Mars looks red because of iron oxide, rust, in its soil. On a 4.6 to 5.9 ft (140 to 180 cm) round rug, a solar system design becomes a centerpiece and a science lesson at once. Our round rugs page shows each size in a room.
Galaxies and nebulas
Our own galaxy, the Milky Way, is roughly 100,000 light-years across and home to hundreds of billions of stars. Images from space telescopes, from Hubble, launched in 1990, to the James Webb Space Telescope, launched on December 25, 2021, have shown galaxies and nebulas in breathtaking color. A galaxy rug, swirling purples, blues and pinks scattered with stars, has a dreamy, dramatic look that suits a teen's bedroom, a gaming setup with RGB lighting or a dark, moody living room.
The Moon
A Moon rug, the grey, cratered surface on a round rug, is simple, striking and surprisingly calming. It looks like a full moon has settled on your floor. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first people to walk there, and a Moon rug with a single small footprint is a lovely nod to that moment. It suits a bedroom, a reading corner or a nursery.
Earth from space
Seeing the Earth from space, a blue and white marble floating in darkness, changed how many people thought about our planet. A rug of the Earth against the black of space is a quiet, powerful design for an office, a living room or a classroom. For flat maps of the world, see our world map rugs.
Rockets and astronauts
For younger children, space is all about adventure: rockets blasting off with flames and smoke, astronauts floating on a tether, friendly aliens waving from strange planets. A playful space rug makes a bedroom or a playroom feel like mission control. A rocket-shaped rug, cut to its outline with fins and a flame, is especially fun; our shaped rugs come in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). On a hard floor, choose Standard: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², so the rug stays put during countdowns. Our kids play rugs page has more ideas.
Life in orbit
Astronauts have lived aboard the International Space Station continuously since November 2000, circling the Earth about every ninety minutes. A space station design, solar panels glinting above the curve of the Earth, is a great choice for a child fascinated by real space travel and a reminder that people are living up there right now.
Eclipses, comets and meteor showers
Some of the most exciting space events can be seen from your own backyard. Every August, the Perseid meteor shower fills the night sky with shooting stars, and on April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse swept across the United States from Texas to Maine. A rug inspired by an eclipse, a black disc ringed by the Sun's glowing corona, is a dramatic, minimal design for a round rug, and a lovely souvenir for anyone who traveled to see one.
Black holes
In 2019, astronomers released the first-ever image of a black hole, a glowing orange ring around a dark center in a distant galaxy, captured by a network of telescopes around the world called the Event Horizon Telescope. A black hole design, a ring of fiery light on black, is a striking, mysterious rug for a teenager's room or a science lover's study.
Exploring Mars
Robotic rovers have been exploring Mars for decades, and NASA's Perseverance rover landed there in February 2021, even carrying a small helicopter that made the first powered flight on another planet. A Mars landscape rug, red dunes and rocks under a pale sky, with a little rover tracking across it, is a great design for a future scientist.
Gifts for stargazers
A space rug is a wonderful gift for a child who wants to be an astronaut, a teenager with a telescope, a science teacher or an adult who never stopped looking up. A solar system round rug is the safest choice; a custom night sky from a special date is the most personal.
Constellations and night skies
For a softer look, a rug of constellations, the Big Dipper, Orion and the zodiac, joined by fine lines on navy, is elegant and calm. It suits a bedroom, a nursery or a grown-up room. For more, see our celestial rugs.
A space bedroom
A space bedroom can grow with a child. For a toddler, friendly rockets and smiling planets. For a school-age child, a solar system rug, glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling and a model rocket on the shelf. For a teen, a galaxy rug, dark walls and LED strip lights. For the softest bedside rug, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m². Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Nurseries
A soft space nursery, a sleepy moon, a few gentle stars and pastel planets, is calm and dreamy. Choose Premium for tummy time, and switch to Standard's non-slip back once your child is walking on a smooth floor. Our kids and nursery rugs have more ideas.
Game rooms and sci-fi fans
For gamers and science fiction fans, a galaxy or planet-surface rug under the desk chair finishes a setup beautifully, especially with blue or purple lighting. Under a chair, choose Standard in 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft, which lets wheels roll freely. For favorite franchises, see our Star Wars rugs and Star Trek rugs, and for more setup ideas, our gaming rugs.
Classrooms
A solar system rug is a natural fit for a science classroom or a homeschool corner. Children can stand on a planet, compare sizes and learn the order from the Sun outward. A custom size up to 5′11″ × 10′ gives a bigger room a bigger universe.
Your own sky
Want a rug of the night sky as it looked on a special date, a birthday or a wedding, a planet with your child's name or a design from your own astronomy photos? Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, or cut it to shape. Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned, so please check names and spelling before ordering.
Standard or Premium
Standard is best for playrooms, classrooms, game rooms and anywhere with a hard or slippery floor, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best in nurseries and bedrooms. Both are printed the same way, so blacks stay deep and nebulas stay bright, and both go in the washing machine.
Sizes, shipping and returns
Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.
Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the stars keep shining and the planets stay bright, wash after wash.
Voyager and the Golden Record
In 1977, NASA launched two spacecraft, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, on a grand tour of the outer planets. They flew past Jupiter and Saturn, and Voyager 2 went on to Uranus and Neptune, still the only spacecraft to have visited them. Decades later, both crossed into interstellar space, Voyager 1 in 2012 and Voyager 2 in 2018, the most distant human-made objects ever.
Each carries a Golden Record, a gold-plated copper disc with sounds and images chosen to represent life on Earth: greetings in dozens of languages, music from around the world, whale songs, a mother's kiss and a baby's cry. A diagram engraved on the cover shows how to play it and where Earth is, in case anyone ever finds it.
In 1990, at the suggestion of astronomer Carl Sagan, Voyager 1 turned its camera back toward home and photographed Earth as a tiny speck in a beam of sunlight, the Pale Blue Dot, from about 3.7 billion miles away.
Those stories make inspiring rugs. A Golden Record with its engraved diagram, gold on deep black, is a beautiful, thoughtful design for a study or a stargazer's bedroom. A Voyager spacecraft drifting past Saturn's rings suits a child who loves space, and a tiny blue dot in a sweep of light reminds everyone in the room how small and precious our home is.
