About Bee Rugs

Sweet as honey

A bee rug brings warmth and cheer into a room: golden honeycomb hexagons glowing like sunlight through a hive, a chubby bumblebee in a nursery, bees drifting between flowers in a cottage kitchen or a scatter of elegant gold bees on deep navy. Bees are one of the happiest motifs in home decor, symbols of hard work, community and summer gardens. Ours are printed edge to edge on soft velvet, so golds stay warm and fine wing details stay crisp, and every rug goes in the washing machine.

Honeycomb

Honeybees build their combs from wax in perfect hexagons, and there's a good reason: mathematicians have shown that a hexagonal grid divides a surface into equal cells using the least possible perimeter, so bees store the most honey with the least wax. That efficient, beautiful pattern makes a wonderful rug. In gold on cream, it's warm and cheerful; in gold on black, it's graphic and modern. For more hexagon and geometric designs, see our geometric rugs.

Bumblebees for little ones

Round, fuzzy bumblebees with big smiles are one of the sweetest nursery themes there is. A bumblebee rug in soft yellow and black, perhaps with a few flowers and clouds, is cheerful without being loud. A bee-shaped rug, cut to the outline of a chubby bee with its wings, is especially charming beside a crib. Our shaped rugs come in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², for tummy time, and switch to Standard's non-slip back once your child is walking on a smooth floor. Our kids and nursery rugs have more ideas.

Bees and flowers

Bees and flowers belong together. A rug with bees drifting among lavender, clover, sunflowers and wildflowers feels like a summer garden in bloom, perfect for a sunroom, a cottage kitchen or a bedroom with floral bedding. For more garden designs, see our flower rugs, daisy rugs and butterfly rugs.

Gold bees and the imperial bee

Small gold bees on a deep ground have a long, regal history. Napoleon chose the bee as an emblem of his empire, and gold bees were embroidered on robes and woven into fabrics and carpets. Today, a repeating pattern of tiny gold bees on navy, black or emerald is an elegant, classic design for a study, a dining room or a dressing room, and it reads as refined rather than playful.

Amazing bee facts

Bees are remarkable creatures. A single honeybee worker produces only about a twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in her whole lifetime, so every jar is the work of thousands of bees. Honeybees tell each other where to find flowers with a waggle dance, a discovery that helped earn the scientist Karl von Frisch a Nobel Prize in 1973. And bees and other pollinators help many of the fruits, vegetables and nuts we eat to grow. A bee rug in a child's room is a lovely way to talk about why bees matter.

Cottage kitchens

A honeycomb or bees-and-flowers rug in front of a farmhouse sink, with jars of honey on the shelf and gingham at the windows, is the heart of the cottage kitchen look. Choose Standard: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which grips the floor, and when honey or jam drips, it goes in the washing machine. Our kitchen rugs have more ideas.

Bee kind

A friendly pun with a little bee, bee kind, bee happy or bee yourself, is a sweet message for an entryway, a classroom or a child's bedroom, and a gentle daily reminder. Through our custom rugs, the words can be anything you like, including your family name.

Classrooms

Teachers love bee themes for classrooms: a hive of busy learners, a bee kind message for circle time and honeycomb spots for each child to sit on. A honeycomb rug, where every hexagon can be one child's place, is a practical seating design. For more, see our classroom rugs.

Bedrooms and living rooms

In a grown-up bedroom, gold bees on navy or a soft honeycomb on cream feels warm and quietly elegant. In a living room, a honeycomb rug under the coffee table adds a sunny, graphic touch. For the softest feel underfoot, choose Premium. Our bedroom rugs and living room rugs pages have more layouts.

Bathrooms

A small bee rug by the vanity is a cheerful touch in a bathroom. One honest note: our rugs are printed velvet, not thick, quick-drying bath mats, so place one by the vanity or the door, rather than right where you step out of the shower, and choose Standard for its grip on tiles.

Bumblebees and honeybees

Not all bees are alike. Honeybees live in large colonies of thousands, build wax combs and make the honey we eat. Bumblebees are rounder and fuzzier, live in much smaller colonies, and are excellent pollinators of tomatoes, blueberries and many wildflowers. Cartoon bees are usually drawn as bumblebees, which is why they look so cuddly, while honeycomb designs come from the honeybee. A rug can celebrate either, or both.

Planting for bees

If a bee rug inspires you to welcome real bees, the garden is the place to start. Lavender, clover, coneflowers, sunflowers and native wildflowers all attract bees, and leaving a corner of the yard a little wild helps them nest. A bees-and-flowers rug in a room that looks out onto a pollinator garden ties indoors and out together beautifully.

Gifts for beekeepers

Backyard beekeeping has become a popular hobby, and a bee rug is a perfect gift for someone who keeps hives, sells honey at a farmers market or simply loves bees. A honeycomb rug is the safest choice; a custom rug with the name of their honey or their farm is the most personal.

Yellow, black and gold

Bee designs bring a sunny palette into a room: honey gold, warm yellow and crisp black, often with cream, sage or lavender. Gold and black feels graphic and modern; soft yellow and cream feels gentle and cottagey; gold on navy feels rich and traditional. Pick one or two of the rug's colors and repeat them in cushions, tea towels or a vase of sunflowers.

Spring and summer

Bees mean warm weather, open windows and gardens in bloom. A bee rug makes a cheerful seasonal swap in spring, in an entryway or a kitchen, and it pairs naturally with fresh flowers and pastel decor.

Entryways

Just inside the front door, a small honeycomb or bee kind rug gives guests a warm welcome. Keep it indoors, out of the weather, and choose Standard for its grip on tile and wood.

Round bee rugs

A round rug with a honeycomb pattern, a ring of bees around the edge or a single big bumblebee in the middle is a soft, happy shape for a reading corner or a nursery. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across. Our round rugs page shows each size in a room.

Kids' rooms and playrooms

Older children love bees too, especially with a few facts to go with them. A bright honeycomb rug makes a fun hopping game, from hexagon to hexagon, and a garden of bees and flowers is a cheerful backdrop for play. On a hard floor, choose Standard so the rug stays put. Our kids play rugs page has more ideas.

Standard or Premium

Standard is best for kitchens, bathrooms, classrooms, entryways and anywhere with a hard or slippery floor, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best in nurseries and bedrooms. Both are printed the same way, so golds stay warm and blacks stay crisp, and both go in the washing machine.

Sizes, shipping and returns

Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and bee-shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.

Care

Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills, honey included, with warm water and then cold. The design is printed into the fibers, so the gold stays sweet and the stripes stay crisp, wash after wash.

Skeps, hives and beekeeping motifs

Long before wooden hive boxes, beekeepers in Europe kept bees in skeps, dome-shaped baskets of coiled straw. The skep became a symbol of hard work and home, carved into buildings, stitched into samplers and painted on signs, and it still appears on honey jars today. In 1852, the American minister Lorenzo Langstroth patented a hive with removable wooden frames, spaced so the bees would build comb on each frame without gluing them together, and that design is the basis of most modern hives.

Both shapes make charming rugs. A golden skep surrounded by a few bees and wildflowers suits a cottage kitchen or a farmhouse entry, and a stack of white hive boxes in a meadow brings a gentle, outdoorsy look to a sunroom. For a beekeeper's home, a rug of hexagonal frames heavy with honey, or a row of vintage honey jars with handwritten labels, is a personal, practical gift.

Beekeeping motifs pair well with natural wood, linen, wicker baskets and soft yellows. Keep the rest of the room simple and the rug becomes a quiet tribute to one of the oldest partnerships between people and animals.

Bee motifs also carry meaning. In many traditions, bees stand for community, hard work and sweetness shared, which is why skeps and honeycombs appear on family crests, shop signs and wedding gifts. A bee rug at the front door of a new home, or in the kitchen of someone who loves to cook and share food, carries that wish quietly. For beekeepers, local honey producers or farm shops, a custom rug with the farm's name above a golden skep makes a welcoming entry mat that visitors remember.
