About Botanical Rugs
Leaves, underfoot
A botanical rug brings the calm of a garden into a room: oversized palm and banana leaves, the dramatic split leaves of a monstera, soft feathery ferns or a delicate vintage botanical drawing. It's the natural partner for a room full of houseplants, and it adds life even where plants won't grow. Ours are printed edge to edge on soft velvet, so every vein and leaf edge comes out crisp and every shade of green stays rich, and the whole rug goes in your washing machine.

Tropical leaves
Big tropical leaves, palm fronds and banana leaves overlapping in fresh greens, are the boldest botanical look. They bring a sense of vacation and warmth into a room, and they look especially good with rattan furniture, white walls and plenty of light. The banana-leaf look has a famous history: a banana-leaf wallpaper designed in the 1940s for the Beverly Hills Hotel became one of the most recognizable patterns in American design. A tropical leaf rug carries that glamorous, sunny feeling. For more beachy designs, see our coastal rugs.
Monstera
The monstera, sometimes called the Swiss cheese plant, is one of the most popular houseplants of recent years, loved for its big, heart-shaped leaves full of natural splits and holes. A monstera rug is graphic, modern and instantly recognizable, a perfect match for a living room with mid-century furniture and a few real plants in the corners. On a round rug, a single huge monstera leaf makes a dramatic centerpiece. Our round rugs page shows each size in a room.
Ferns
Ferns are among the oldest plants on Earth, and their soft, feathery fronds make a gentle, calming rug. In Victorian Britain, a craze for collecting ferns grew so popular it was given its own name, pteridomania, and fern patterns appeared on everything from pottery to garden benches. A fern rug in soft green on cream suits a bedroom, a bathroom or a reading nook.
Eucalyptus, olive and sage
For a softer, more muted look, silvery eucalyptus leaves, olive branches and sage-green foliage feel calm and Mediterranean. They suit a quiet bedroom, a farmhouse kitchen or a Scandinavian-style living room with pale wood and linen. Sage is a calm, easy color to live with, and a sage botanical rug brings it in gently.
Vintage botanical illustrations
For centuries, artists and scientists drew plants with extraordinary care: the seventeenth-century naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian painted plants and insects together, and Pierre-Joseph Redouté became famous for his roses in early nineteenth-century France. A rug in that tradition, fine drawings of leaves, flowers and seeds with delicate labels, has a scholarly, elegant charm that suits a study, a library or a kitchen. For a famous botanical designer, see our William Morris rugs.
Dark botanicals
Lush leaves on a black or deep green ground create a moody, dramatic look, sometimes called dark botanical. It's a favorite in maximalist interiors, with velvet sofas, brass lamps and dark-painted walls. A dark botanical rug makes a dining room or a living room feel rich and enveloping.
Bringing nature indoors
The idea that people feel better with a connection to nature, sometimes called biophilia, a term popularized by the biologist E. O. Wilson in the 1980s, has inspired a whole approach to interior design. Natural light, plants, wood, stone and nature-inspired patterns all play a part. A botanical rug is one of the simplest ways to add that feeling, especially in rooms where real plants struggle, like a dim hallway or a busy kitchen.
Pairing with real plants
A botanical rug looks its best alongside a few living plants that echo it: a tall fiddle-leaf fig or a monstera beside a tropical rug, a trailing pothos on a shelf above a fern design, or a pot of herbs on the windowsill near an olive-branch kitchen rug. Repeat one or two shades of green from the rug in cushions or curtains, and the room will feel calm and connected.
Leafy nurseries
Soft greenery makes a calm, gender-neutral nursery theme. A sage fern or eucalyptus rug, white furniture and a few gentle animal prints feel fresh and restful. Choose Premium for tummy time and switch to Standard's non-slip back once your child is walking on a smooth floor. Our kids and nursery rugs have more ideas.
Autumn leaves
Botanicals don't have to be green. A rug of falling autumn leaves in rust, gold and burgundy brings the colors of fall indoors from September through Thanksgiving, and it suits a cozy cabin or a farmhouse all year.
Home offices
A leafy rug under the desk makes a home office feel less like work and more like a calm studio. Under a desk chair, choose Standard in 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft, which stays put and lets wheels roll freely.
Living rooms
Under a coffee table, a botanical area rug brings the outdoors in. Pair it with a neutral sofa, natural wood, woven baskets and a few real plants that echo the leaves on the floor. A 5×7 ft rug is our largest standard size; custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. For the softest feel underfoot, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m². Our living room rugs page has more layouts.
Sunrooms and plant rooms
A sunroom or a plant-filled corner is the natural home of a botanical rug. Under a cluster of potted plants, it ties the space together; just be sure to use saucers under the pots, and lift the rug now and then to let the floor beneath dry if you water often. If a pot does overflow, the rug goes in the washing machine.
Bedrooms
A soft fern or eucalyptus rug beside the bed makes a bedroom feel calm and fresh. Pair it with white or sage bedding, linen curtains and a trailing plant on a shelf. Our bedroom rugs page has more ideas.
Bathrooms
Botanical designs look wonderful in bathrooms, especially with ferns and other plants that love humidity. One honest note: our rugs are printed velvet, not thick, quick-drying bath mats, so place one by the vanity or the door, rather than right where you step out of the shower, and choose Standard: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², for its grip on tiles.
Kitchens
An olive branch, a herb pattern or a vintage botanical design in front of the kitchen sink is a fresh, practical choice. Choose Standard, which grips the floor and goes in the washing machine after spills. Our kitchen rugs have more ideas.
Entryways and hallways
Just inside the front door, a leafy rug gives guests a fresh, green welcome, and down a hallway, a custom runner of ferns or palms turns a corridor into a garden path. Choose Standard for both, which stays put on hard floors, and keep entry rugs indoors, out of the weather.
Flowers and companions
Leaves pair naturally with flowers, butterflies and bees. For more garden designs, see our flower rugs, butterfly rugs and bee rugs, and for leafy jungle scenes with animals, our tiger rugs.
Your own plants
Want a rug of your own favorite plant, a photo of your garden or a leaf pattern in your exact shade of green? Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, or cut it to shape, like a single giant leaf. Our shaped rugs come in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned.
Standard or Premium
Standard is best for kitchens, bathrooms, sunrooms and anywhere with a hard or slippery floor, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best in living rooms and bedrooms. Both are printed the same way, so greens stay rich and leaf veins stay crisp, and both go in the washing machine.
Sizes, shipping and returns
Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and leaf-shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.
Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so your leaves stay green, no watering required.
Latin names and specimen labels
Every plant has a two-part Latin name, a system the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus set out in 1753. The swiss cheese plant is Monstera deliciosa, the fiddle-leaf fig is Ficus lyrata, the bird of paradise is Strelitzia reginae and the Boston fern is a form of Nephrolepis exaltata. In old herbaria and museum collections, each pressed specimen sat on paper with a neat handwritten label: name, place and date of collection.
That scholarly look makes a lovely rug. A single leaf, a monstera or a fern frond, laid out like a pressed specimen with a small label in the corner, brings a quiet, curated feel to a study, a library corner or a plant lover's living room. A grid of several labeled leaves works like a botanical chart, educational for a child's room and elegant in a home office.
For a personal touch, the label can carry the Latin name of your own favorite houseplant, the place you found it or a family name, as if your home were a small natural history museum.
For a gardener or a plant shop owner, a labeled-specimen rug with the Latin names of their own favorite plants makes a thoughtful, personal gift, and it doubles as a lesson for kids who want to learn the real names of the plants on the windowsill.
FAQ
Questions about Botanical Rugs
Are botanical rugs machine washable?
Yes. Palms, monstera and ferns go in on a gentle cold cycle; dry them flat. The greens stay fresh, wash after wash.
Which botanical designs do you offer?
Tropical palm and banana leaves, monstera, ferns, eucalyptus and olive, vintage botanical illustrations and dark botanicals on black.
Do you make monstera leaf rugs?
Yes. Monstera leaves on rectangles or a single huge leaf on a round rug, or cut to the leaf's shape.
Can I put a botanical rug under potted plants?
Yes, with saucers under the pots. Lift the rug now and then to let the floor dry, and wash it if a pot overflows.
Can I use a botanical rug in the bathroom?
Yes, beside the vanity or the door rather than where you step out of the shower. A fern or palm leaf suits a bathroom, but it's printed velvet, not a quick-drying bath mat; choose Standard for grip on tile.
Do you make sage green botanical rugs?
Yes. Eucalyptus, olive and fern designs in soft sage, popular for calm bedrooms and Scandinavian-style rooms.
Do you make leaf-shaped rugs?
Yes. A single giant monstera, banana or fern leaf can be cut to its outline, from 2.6×2.6 ft (80×80 cm) to 5.2×5.9 ft (160×180 cm), like a leaf that just fell to the floor.
Can I get a rug of my own plant or garden?
Yes. A photo of your garden, a favorite houseplant or your own botanical drawing can be printed on a custom rug up to 5′11″ × 10′. Custom pieces can't be returned.
