About Cloud Rugs

A little piece of sky

A cloud rug makes a room feel lighter and calmer the moment you step on it. The dreamiest design is a rug cut to the shape of a puffy cloud, soft white or pale blue, lying on the floor like it drifted down from the sky. Others love white clouds scattered across a sky-blue rectangle, a pastel sunset, or a cloud with a rainbow and a few stars. Ours are printed edge to edge on soft velvet and every one goes in the washing machine, which, for a rug that's meant to stay looking white and fluffy, matters a great deal.

Cloud-shaped rugs

A rug cut to the outline of a cloud, with its rounded, billowing edges, is one of the most charming rugs you can put in a room. Our shaped rugs come in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). A small cloud beside a bed is the first soft thing little feet touch in the morning; a large cloud in the middle of a nursery or a bedroom feels like a place to dream. White, cream, pale blue, blush pink and soft grey are the classic colors.

A cloud nursery

Clouds are a classic nursery theme, and for good reason: they're calm, gentle and suit any baby. Pair a cloud rug with white furniture, soft grey or blue walls and a mobile of clouds and stars. Choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², for tummy time and first crawls; once your child is walking on a smooth floor, Standard's non-slip back is the safer choice. Every rug goes in the washing machine. Our kids and nursery rugs have more ideas.

Rainbows, stars and moons

Clouds make perfect companions for other sky motifs: a rainbow arching between two clouds, a sleepy crescent moon resting on a cloud, or a scatter of little stars. These storybook designs are lovely in a nursery or a toddler's room and suit a calm bedtime routine. For more, see our rainbow rugs and celestial rugs.

Pastel skies

A pastel sunset, clouds glowing in pink, peach, lilac and gold, is a dreamy design for a teen's bedroom, a dorm or a cute, soft room. It pairs beautifully with white bedding, fairy lights and a few plush toys. For more pastel designs, see our cute rugs.

Grown-up cloud rugs

Clouds aren't only for children. A subtle, tone-on-tone cloud pattern in grey, cream or soft white adds gentle movement to a grown-up bedroom or a calm living room without feeling childish. A large cloud-shaped rug in off-white has a sculptural, modern look in a minimal room, especially with pale wood and linen.

Cloud spotting

Clouds were first given their modern names in 1802 by Luke Howard, an English amateur scientist who used Latin words to describe what he saw: cumulus for the puffy, cotton-ball clouds of a fair day, cirrus for the wispy, feathery clouds high in the sky and stratus for flat, grey layers. A rug that shows the different kinds of clouds is a lovely, gentle science lesson for a curious child, and a fun excuse to go outside and look up.

On cloud nine

To be on cloud nine is to be blissfully happy, and one popular explanation traces the phrase to an early cloud atlas in which the towering cumulonimbus, the tallest cloud of all, was listed as type number nine. Whether or not that's the true origin, a cloud rug carries the same feeling: light, happy and a little dreamy. A cloud with the words cloud nine, through a custom rug, makes a sweet gift for newlyweds or new parents.

For little weather watchers

Some children are fascinated by weather: rain, thunder, rainbows and snow. A playful weather rug, a smiling cloud with raindrops, a sun peeking out and a rainbow, is a lovely way to talk about the sky together. Ask what the clouds outside look like today, then find the same kind on the rug.

Choosing a size for a nursery

In a nursery, a cloud-shaped rug of about 3.9 to 5.2 ft (120 to 160 cm) fits nicely in front of the crib or beside the changing table, leaving room around it for a glider or a toy basket. For a larger nursery, a 4×6 ft clouds-on-sky-blue rectangle in the middle of the room gives plenty of space for floor play as your baby grows. A small 2.6 ft (80 cm) cloud by the door is a sweet finishing touch.

Shared rooms and twins

For twins or siblings sharing a room, two matching cloud rugs, one beside each bed, keep things fair and calm. Choose different soft colors, pale blue and blush, for example, so each child has a cloud of their own.

Dorms and first apartments

A cloud-shaped rug is a quick way to soften a dorm room or a first apartment, especially beside the bed on a cold, hard floor. Choose Standard there for its grip, and wash it at the end of the year before it goes home.

Kids' rooms and playrooms

In a child's room, a cloud rug becomes part of the imagination: a fluffy island to sit on, a raft floating on the sky, a soft landing after a jump from the bed. On a hard floor, choose Standard: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², so the rug stays put. Our kids play rugs page has more ideas.

Reading corners

A cloud-shaped rug, a big floor cushion, a low shelf of picture books and a soft lamp make a reading corner children want to curl up in. Choose Premium for this, soft enough to lie on for a long story. Our round rugs page also shows soft round sizes for corners.

Bathrooms

A cloud bath mat is a sweet, airy touch in a bathroom, especially with white tiles. One honest note: our rugs are printed velvet, not thick, quick-drying bath mats, so place one by the vanity or the door, rather than right where you step out of the shower, and choose Standard for its grip on tiles.

Keeping a white rug white

A white or cream cloud rug looks best when it's fresh, and that's where a washable rug shines. Vacuum on a low setting every few days, blot spills with cold water straight away, and when it needs a proper clean, machine wash it on a gentle, cold cycle and let it dry flat. If you have young children or pets, a pale blue or grey cloud is a little more forgiving between washes.

Calm bedrooms

Clouds are associated with calm, rest and daydreaming, so a cloud rug suits any room meant for relaxing. Beside the bed, a soft cloud is a gentle start and end to the day. Pair it with simple bedding, warm low lighting and very little clutter. Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.

Pairing with other designs

Cloud rugs pair beautifully with stars, moons, rainbows, hot-air balloons and little airplanes on the walls, and with soft checks or stripes in matching pastels. Keep the palette light, and the whole room will feel like a clear, bright sky.

Your own sky

Want a cloud in your exact colors, with your child's name, or a sky that matches your nursery walls? Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, or cut it to shape. Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned, so please check names and spelling before ordering.

Standard or Premium

Standard is best on hard or slippery floors, in bathrooms and playrooms, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best in nurseries, bedrooms and reading corners. Both are printed the same way, so whites stay bright and blues stay soft, and both go in the washing machine.

Sizes, shipping and returns

Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and cloud-shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.

Care

Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so your clouds stay soft and bright, wash after wash.

Cloud types for little scientists

Clouds have names, and learning them turns every walk into a science lesson. In 1802 and 1803, an English pharmacist and amateur meteorologist, Luke Howard, gave clouds the Latin names still used today. Cumulus are the puffy, cotton-ball clouds of a fair summer day. Stratus are flat, gray sheets that cover the sky. Cirrus are thin, wispy streaks high up, made of ice crystals, and cumulonimbus are towering thunderheads that bring storms.

A cloud-type rug sets these out like a chart: each cloud drawn at its height in the sky, labeled in friendly letters, from low stratus near the bottom to cirrus near the top. It's a calm, educational design for a child's bedroom or a homeschool corner, and it makes a natural companion to a weather station, a rain gauge on the windowsill or a book about storms.

For younger children, keep it simpler: a puffy cumulus, a long flat stratus and a feathery cirrus, each with a small face, and a game of matching them to the clouds outside the window. For older kids, add a rainbow, a lightning bolt and a snowflake, and explain how each one forms.

Cloud spotting needs no equipment, only a moment to look up. A rug that teaches the names gives children a reason to do it every day, and to tell the difference between a sunny-day cumulus and a cumulonimbus building toward a storm.

For classrooms and science corners, a cloud-type rug pairs well with a simple weather chart on the wall, where children record each day's clouds, temperature and rain. Over a few weeks, they begin to notice patterns, like puffy cumulus on warm afternoons and gray stratus before a drizzle.
