About Sonic Rugs
A rug for the fastest room in the house
A Sonic rug brings the blue hedgehog's world onto the floor: the checkered brown cliffs and palm trees of Green Hill Zone, a spinning gold ring, the seven Chaos Emeralds or Sonic himself mid-sprint. For a child's bedroom, the classic choice is Sonic with Tails and Knuckles on a bright Green Hill background; for a grown-up retro game room, the 16-bit pixel art and the checkerboard pattern on their own work best. Every design is printed into soft velvet and goes in the washing machine, which matters a great deal in a kid's room.
Where Sonic came from
Sonic the Hedgehog first ran onto screens on June 23, 1991, on the Sega Genesis, known as the Mega Drive outside North America. Sega wanted a mascot fast and bold enough to rival Mario, and the team that became Sonic Team, programmer Yuji Naka, character designer Naoto Ohshima and level designer Hirokazu Yasuhara, created a cocky blue hedgehog in red sneakers who ran faster than anything before him. His blue was chosen to match Sega's logo. The early nineties console war between Sega and Nintendo made him a playground hero, and he has stayed one ever since, through dozens of games, cartoons, comics and, from 2020, a series of blockbuster movies.
Green Hill Zone
The first level of the first game is still the most famous. Green Hill Zone has checkered brown-and-tan earth, bright green grass, palm trees, waterfalls, totem poles and the loop-the-loops Sonic races through at full speed. Its checkerboard is one of the most recognizable patterns in gaming, and on a rug it's brilliant: on its own, it looks like a warm, retro geometric design; with a palm tree and a loop, it is unmistakably Sonic.
A Green Hill scene is the classic choice for a child's bedroom: bright, cheerful and full of things to point at. The plain checkerboard is the grown-up version, at home in a retro game room or a hallway.
Gold rings
Rings are Sonic's life force: collect them as you run, lose them in a shower of gold when you're hit, and collect a hundred for an extra life. The sound of collecting one is a piece of childhood for millions of people. A single gold ring on a round rug is a simple, graphic design that suits any room, and a scattered trail of rings across a long runner turns a hallway into a level.
The Chaos Emeralds
Seven Chaos Emeralds, each a different color, appear throughout the series, and collecting all of them turns Sonic into Super Sonic, golden and nearly unstoppable. A circle of the seven emeralds on a dark ground is a jewel-bright, elegant rug, and a golden Super Sonic design is a favorite for a kid who has just finished their first game.
The team
| Character | First appeared | Known for |
|---|---|---|
| Sonic | Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) | Speed, attitude and red sneakers |
| Tails | Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) | A two-tailed fox who flies and builds machines |
| Amy Rose | Sonic CD (1993) | Her hammer and her devotion to Sonic |
| Knuckles | Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994) | The echidna guardian of the Master Emerald |
| Shadow | Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) | Sonic's dark rival, with red streaks and hover shoes |
| Dr. Eggman | Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) | The mustached genius with an army of robots |
Sonic, Tails and Knuckles together are the classic trio for a child's room. Shadow is often the favorite of older kids and teens, and a design in his black and red suits a darker, cooler bedroom.
Sonic's sneakers
Few characters are recognizable from their shoes alone, but Sonic is: red sneakers with a white strap and a gold buckle. A sneaker design, one shoe in a cloud of speed lines, is a clever, sporty rug for a teen's room, and a cut-to-shape sneaker rug, one of our shaped rugs, makes a fun bedside mat for a young fan.
Zones to remember
Every Sonic game has its zones, and fans have favorites from every era:
- Chemical Plant and Casino Night, from Sonic 2: pink liquid, tubes, neon and pinball bumpers.
- Ice Cap and Hydrocity, from Sonic 3: snowboards, crystals and water slides.
- Speed Highway and City Escape, from the Adventure games: night skyscrapers and a runaway truck down San Francisco-style streets.
- The open zones of Sonic Frontiers, islands of ruins, towers and grass.
Casino Night's neon pinball look is especially striking as a rug for a game room with LED lights.
Dr. Eggman's badniks
Sonic's enemies are Dr. Eggman's robots, badniks, each with a small animal trapped inside that springs free when Sonic smashes it. The early ones, like the ladybug Motobug and the fish Chopper, are cute in their own way. A design with Eggman's grinning, mustached face is a funny rug for a kid who likes the villain best.
Chili dogs and Chao
In the 1993 cartoon Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic's favorite food was the chili dog, and the joke has followed him ever since. A chili-dog design is a playful rug for a kitchen or a snack corner. For very young fans, the Chao, the small, round creatures players raise in the Chao Garden of the Sonic Adventure games, make a soft, gentle design for a nursery or a toddler's room.
16-bit pixel art
For adults who grew up with a Genesis, the pixel art of the original games is pure nostalgia: Sonic's sprite tapping his foot impatiently when you stop playing, the spinning ring, the title screen with Sonic in a winged emblem. A pixel-art design suits a retro game room beside a shelf of cartridges, and it pairs beautifully with our retro rugs and arcade rugs.
The movies
Paramount's live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movies, beginning in 2020, introduced the character to a whole new generation, with Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in 2024 brought Shadow to the big screen. Many of today's young fans met Sonic through the movies first, and a design inspired by his look on screen is perfect for them.
Speed and play
Sonic is all about running, and young fans love to race around their rooms imitating him. A Green Hill rug with a loop and a few rings becomes a racetrack for toy cars and action figures. On a slippery floor, choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, so the rug stays put even when kids are running at full speed. Our kids play rugs have more ideas for active play.
A Sonic bedroom
A Sonic bedroom doesn't need much: blue walls or bedding, a few gold accents, a poster or two and a rug that ties it all together. A Green Hill scene in the middle of the floor is the classic look; a smaller ring or emerald rug by the bed is subtler. Keep the furniture simple and white, and let the blue and gold do the work. See our bedroom rugs for sizes that suit a child's room.
Sonic and Mario
Once rivals, now friends who have shared Olympic Games and Super Smash Bros. battles, Sonic and Mario are the two great mascots of 1990s gaming. For siblings who can't agree, a Sonic rug in one corner and a Mario rug in the other keeps the peace. Fans of every era will find more in our gaming rugs.
Colors and rooms
Sonic's palette is bold and sunny: cobalt blue, ring gold, sneaker red, grass green and the warm brown of Green Hill's checkers. It looks best against white walls and light wood, with blue bedding. For a teen's room, Shadow's black and red, or a dark Casino Night design, feels more grown-up.
Sizes and levels
A gold ring, an emerald or Sonic's face suits a 3.3 to 4.6 ft (100 to 140 cm) round rug. A Green Hill scene or the team of characters suits a 4×6 or 5×7 ft rectangle; a scattered ring trail suits a long runner. For a soft spot to sit and play, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back. For a gaming chair, choose Standard in 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft so the wheels roll freely.
Gifts
A Sonic rug is a great birthday gift for a young fan who just saw the movies, a retro gamer who grew up with a Genesis or a parent redoing a child's room. If you aren't sure which design to choose, Sonic on Green Hill is the safest. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that, so order ahead of birthdays.
Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the blue stays bright, even after chili dogs.
A note on the character
Super Sonic
Collect all seven Chaos Emeralds, and Sonic transforms into Super Sonic, golden, glowing and nearly invincible, his quills standing up like flames. A rug of a golden Sonic streaking across a starry sky, trailed by seven colored gems, is a bright, triumphant design for a fan's bedroom.
