About Mario Rugs
It's-a him
Mario first appeared in 1981 as Jumpman, the carpenter leaping over barrels in Donkey Kong, created by Shigeru Miyamoto. In 1985, Super Mario Bros. made him the most famous character in video games: a plumber in red overalls, running and jumping through the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser. Forty years later, he's starred in hundreds of games, from Super Mario 64, Galaxy and Odyssey to Mario Kart and Mario Party, a hit animated film and theme parks of his own.
Mario is a hero for every generation, which makes a Mario rug one of the most family-friendly gaming designs there is. Ours are printed into short velvet, so primary reds, sky blues and crisp pixel art come out bright and cheerful, and they go in the washing machine, which matters in a room full of young players.
The question block
A golden block with a question mark, hit from below to release a coin or a power-up, is one of the most recognizable objects in gaming. Its square shape makes it perfect for a square rug, or a rectangle with a row of blocks. A question block rug is fun, bold and instantly understood by players of every age, and kids love jumping on it.
The warp pipe
Here's a clever idea for a round rug: a green warp pipe seen from directly above, a dark opening ringed by a bright green rim. It looks like a hole in the floor leading straight to another world, exactly what Mario's pipes do. A warp-pipe rug in a child's room is a playful invitation to imagine, and a design adults will appreciate too.
Power-ups
Mario's power-ups are some of the most iconic images in gaming:
- The Super Mushroom, red with white spots, which makes Mario grow.
- The 1-Up Mushroom, in green, for an extra life.
- The Fire Flower, for throwing fireballs.
- The Super Star, for a moment of invincibility and that famous music.
- The Super Leaf and the Wonder Flower, from later adventures.
A Super Mushroom on a round rug is cute, graphic and loved by everyone; a star design suits a bedroom; a row of power-ups makes a cheerful pattern for a playroom. Our mushroom rugs have more spotted toadstools for those who love the look.
The cast
The Mushroom Kingdom is full of beloved characters:
| Character | Who they are |
|---|---|
| Mario and Luigi | The brothers in red and green |
| Princess Peach | Ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, and a hero of her own games |
| Toad | Peach's loyal, mushroom-capped attendant |
| Yoshi | The friendly green dinosaur who carries Mario |
| Bowser | The fire-breathing King of the Koopas |
| Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Boos, Chain Chomps | The famous enemies |
A Yoshi design is one of the sweetest choices for a young child; a Bowser rug suits a kid who always roots for the villain.
World 1-1
The first level of Super Mario Bros., World 1-1, is probably the most famous level in gaming history: blue sky, brick blocks, a question block, a Goomba, a pipe and a flagpole at the end. A pixel-art World 1-1 rug, laid out like the screen, is pure nostalgia for adults who played it in the 1980s, and a cheerful, graphic design for their children.
Mario Kart
Mario Kart, first released in 1992, has become one of the best-loved party games ever made, with banana peels, blue shells and Rainbow Road. A Mario Kart track design, a winding road a child can drive toy cars along, is one of the best play rugs there is, and a Rainbow Road design makes a colorful, dreamy rug for a bedroom.
Mario Party
Mario Party turned the Mushroom Kingdom into a board game: players roll dice, race around a board collecting coins and stars, and battle in minigames between turns, often testing friendships along the way. A board-game design, a winding path of spaces, stars and question marks, is a fun, interactive rug for a family room, and kids can use it for their own games with dice and toys.
Luigi's spooky side
Luigi, Mario's taller, more nervous brother in green, stars in his own series, Luigi's Mansion, in which he explores haunted houses with a ghost-catching vacuum. Its friendly spookiness, with Boos, candlelight and a glowing flashlight, makes a Luigi's Mansion design a perfect rug for Halloween or a child who loves gentle ghost stories.
Peach's own stage
Princess Peach has long been more than a princess in a castle, racing in Mario Kart, fighting in Smash Bros. and starring in her own adventures, most recently Princess Peach: Showtime! A Peach design in pink and gold, with her crown and parasol, is a lovely choice for a child who has always loved her best.
The music
Koji Kondo's overworld theme from Super Mario Bros. is one of the most recognized melodies in the world, and Nintendo even celebrates Mario Day every March 10, written as MAR10. A Mario rug in a playroom or music corner is a nod to a tune nearly everyone can hum.
Coins
Mario collects coins everywhere, with that unmistakable sound, and a hundred coins earn an extra life. A pattern of golden coins, or a coin counter with a 1-Up, is a fun, simple rug design that suits a kid's room or a game room.
Mario's adventures
Every generation has its favorite Mario game: Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World on classic consoles, Super Mario 64 and its castle, Super Mario Galaxy among the stars, Super Mario Odyssey with Cappy the talking hat, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder with its strange, joyful Wonder Flowers. A design inspired by your favorite, Galaxy's starry skies or Odyssey's New Donk City, brings its own look to a room.
The movie and the parks
The Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in 2023, became one of the biggest animated films ever, and Super Nintendo World has brought the Mushroom Kingdom to life at theme parks in Japan and the United States. For a child who has visited, or dreams of visiting, a Mario rug is a little piece of that magic at home.
Your own level
Super Mario Maker lets players design their own levels, and many kids sketch them on paper too. Our custom rugs can print a level your child drew, or any Mario-inspired artwork, in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′.
Kids' rooms
Mario is a natural theme for children's rooms, loved by kids who have barely played and by those who play every day. A question block, a mushroom, a warp pipe or Yoshi makes a cheerful play rug. On slippery floors, choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, so the rug stays put while kids jump around, and remember every rug goes in the washing machine.
Family game rooms
Mario is a family game: Mario Kart and Mario Party nights, Super Mario Bros. Wonder played together on the couch. A rug in front of the screen, 5×7 ft, gives everyone a soft place to sit, and a Mario Kart or World 1-1 design makes the room feel like a family arcade. See our gaming rugs for more.
A Nintendo room
A Mario rug is the natural centerpiece of a Nintendo-themed room, alongside Zelda, Kirby and Super Smash Bros. For a retro corner with classic consoles, our retro rugs and game controller rugs fit right in.
Colors and rooms
Mario's palette is bright primaries: red, blue, yellow and green, on sky blue and white clouds. It suits a cheerful kid's room with white walls and simple furniture. For a more grown-up look, a single question block or mushroom on a neutral floor is playful without overwhelming the room.
Sizes and levels
A mushroom, a warp pipe, a star or a coin suits a 3.3 to 4.6 ft (100 to 140 cm) round rug. A question block suits a square-ish rectangle. World 1-1 or a Mario Kart track suits a larger rectangle, 4×6 or 5×7 ft. For a bedroom, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back. Under a gaming chair, choose Standard in 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft.
Gifts
A Mario rug is one of the safest gaming gifts there is: for a child, a teenager, a parent who grew up with the NES or a grandparent who learned to play Mario Kart. If you aren't sure which design to choose, a question block or a Super Mushroom is the safest. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that.
Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water straight away. The design is printed into the fibers, so Mario's red stays bright.
A note on the series
Wonder Flowers and Elephant Mario
Super Mario Bros. Wonder, released in 2023, filled the Flower Kingdom with Wonder Flowers that transform each level in surprising ways: pipes that wriggle like worms, stampedes of creatures, songs and even changes of perspective. It also turned Mario into an elephant with the new Elephant Fruit, and filled courses with chatty Talking Flowers that comment on everything you do.
Those surprises make fun, colorful rugs. A field of smiling talking flowers in bright pinks and yellows is a cheerful design for a child's room, and a big round elephant-shaped Mario silhouette is a funny twist for fans who loved the new power-up. A Wonder Flower bursting into rainbow sparkles captures the game's spirit of play and discovery.
