About NieR Rugs
A strange, beautiful series
NieR is the work of director Yoko Taro, a creator famous for wearing a giant moon mask in interviews and for writing games that refuse to end the way you expect. The first NieR, released in 2010 and developed by Cavia for Square Enix, grew out of the dark Drakengard series and told the story of a man trying to save his sister from a mysterious illness. It was a cult hit. Then, in 2017, NieR: Automata arrived, made with PlatinumGames, and became one of the most talked-about games of its decade.
Automata wrapped real philosophical questions, about meaning, memory and what it is to be human, inside a stylish action game starring androids in black. Its world is ruined and overgrown, its music is unforgettable and its endings have made grown players cry. A NieR rug is decor for people who were changed by that: quiet, elegant and full of meaning for anyone who knows. Ours are printed into short velvet, so the soft greys, whites and greens of NieR's world come out with the gentle gradients they deserve, and they go in the washing machine.
2B, 9S and A2
NieR: Automata is told through three androids of YoRHa, humanity's last army, fighting machine lifeforms on an Earth humans abandoned long ago:
- 2B, the stoic combat android in the black dress and blindfold, carrying her white katana, the face of the game and one of gaming's most recognizable designs.
- 9S, the curious scanner model with silver hair, whose questions slowly unravel everything.
- A2, the rogue prototype with long white hair and torn clothes, who fights alone.
Character rugs suit NieR best. 2B is the obvious choice, but fans who have finished the game may prefer a scene with all three, or one that hints at what happens to them without giving it away.
YoRHa: the black and white aesthetic
The YoRHa uniform, black dresses and coats with white trim, high collars and blindfolds, is a big part of why NieR looks unlike anything else. It draws on gothic fashion and military dress at the same time, and its monochrome palette makes for some of the most elegant gaming rugs we print. A black YoRHa design on a light wood floor, or a white one on dark tile, is decor that reads as fashion first and fandom second. Even the YoRHa emblem on its own makes a striking, minimalist rug.
The Pods
Pod 042 and Pod 153, the floating, box-shaped support units that follow 2B and 9S everywhere, are NieR's unexpected mascots. Dry, literal and strangely endearing, they have a huge following of their own. A Pod design suits a desk area especially well: small, graphic and a little funny, like a quiet companion beside the gaming chair.
The City Ruins and the world after humans
Automata's world is beautiful in a way few games have managed: skyscrapers swallowed by trees, sunlight through collapsed concrete, deer and boar wandering among abandoned cars. The landscapes, the City Ruins, the Desert, the Forest Kingdom, the Amusement Park with its endless fireworks, Pascal's peaceful village, the Copied City, make for calm, painterly rugs. Their greens, greys and washed-out sky colors suit living rooms and bedrooms far better than most game art, and non-fans will just see a lovely post-apocalyptic landscape.
The Bunker and the Resistance
Between missions, 2B and 9S return to the Bunker, YoRHa's orbital base, a cold, white, perfectly ordered place high above the planet, where androids salute with "Glory to Mankind". Down on the surface, the Resistance camp is its opposite: a patchwork of tents, scrap and warm lights run by androids who have made a kind of home in the ruins. Those two moods, clinical white and lived-in warmth, give NieR fans two very different ways to theme a room, and a rug is where either one starts.
The machines
NieR's machine lifeforms are its secret heart. Round-headed, clumsy and strangely sweet, they start as enemies and become something far more complicated: Pascal the pacifist leader, the machines who form a village, a cult, a kingdom. A machine lifeform design is a favorite of fans who want something less obvious than 2B, and their simple round silhouettes look wonderful on round rugs.
NieR Replicant and the Lunar Tear
The original NieR returned in 2021 as NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…, a careful remake that introduced a new generation to Nier, his sister Yonah, the fierce swordswoman Kaine, the shy Emil and the talking book Grimoire Weiss. Its most beautiful symbol is the Lunar Tear, a rare, pale flower said to grant wishes, which appears again in Automata. A Lunar Tear rug is one of the most delicate NieR designs, soft and floral, a perfect bedroom piece and a quiet nod to fans of both games.
The music
Keiichi Okabe's soundtrack is one of the most celebrated in gaming, with songs sung in invented languages and pieces that change as you play. Fans play it while working, studying and falling asleep. A NieR rug in a music corner, beside a record player or under a keyboard stand, is a fitting tribute, and you'll find more for that kind of room in our music rugs.
Endings and meaning
NieR: Automata famously has 26 endings, each labeled with a letter from A to Z, and its true conclusion only arrives after you've played through it several times. The final ending asks something of the player that no other game has, and many fans say it changed how they think about games. That depth is part of why NieR decor feels personal. Choose a design that means something to you: the moment you first understood the story, a character you couldn't stop thinking about, or a symbol only other players will recognize.
Colors that work in real rooms
NieR art is unusually easy to live with. Its palette is restrained: blacks and whites, soft greys, faded concrete, mossy greens, pale sky blues, touched with warm sunset light. That means a NieR rug sits comfortably in rooms that aren't built around gaming at all. Pair a monochrome YoRHa design with black metal furniture and white walls, or a City Ruins landscape with plants, warm wood and linen. Avoid strong reds and neons nearby; NieR looks best when the room around it is calm.
Where a NieR rug works best
| Room | Design that suits it | Size and level |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming setup | 2B, the YoRHa emblem or a Pod | 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft, Standard under a chair |
| Bedroom | The Lunar Tear or a City Ruins landscape | 2.6×3.9 ft, Premium beside the bed |
| Living room | A soft landscape or a monochrome YoRHa pattern | 5×7 ft, Premium |
| Desk corner or doorway | A Pod or a machine lifeform on a round rug | 3.3 to 3.9 ft (100 to 120 cm) round, Standard |
Standard is 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, made for desk chairs and busy spots. Premium is 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, softer and warmer for lounging and bare feet.
A NieR setup
A NieR-themed gaming setup is less about RGB and more about mood. Keep the desk black or white, add a small plant, choose soft white lighting and let one strong piece, a 2B rug under the chair or a large landscape print on the wall, carry the theme. Figures of 2B and 9S on a shelf finish it. Under the gaming chair, Standard's grip and flat surface matter: wheels roll freely and the rug stays put during long play sessions.
For fans of Yoko Taro's other work
Many NieR fans follow Yoko Taro across his projects, from Drakengard to the mobile game NieR Reincarnation, and they often love other thoughtful, melancholy games too. If that's you, look at our Final Fantasy rugs, another Square Enix favorite, and the wider gaming rugs collection.
Anime and new fans
NieR: Automata Ver1.1a, the anime adaptation that began in 2023, brought 2B and 9S to viewers who had never played the game, and the series' popularity continues to grow. If you're buying for someone who discovered NieR through the anime, 2B or the YoRHa emblem is a safe choice; both are central to every version of the story.
Gifts
A NieR rug is a thoughtful gift for the friend who still talks about Ending E. If you aren't sure which character they love, the YoRHa emblem or a City Ruins landscape is the safest choice. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that.
Care
Vacuum on a low setting each week, blot spills with cold water straight away, and wash the rug on a gentle, cold cycle when it needs it; let it air dry flat. The design is printed into the fibers, so the whites stay clean and the blacks stay deep.
A note on the series
Emil
Across both NieR games, Emil, a cheerful, skull-faced boy with a sad history, appears as a wandering shopkeeper riding a small vehicle and singing to himself. Fans adore him. A rug of Emil's round, smiling mask on a pale field of white flowers is a tender design that only players who know his story will fully understand.
Players who meet him in both games often call him the series' kindest character.
