About Meditation Rugs
A place to sit still
The hardest part of meditating at home is often just finding the spot. A meditation rug solves that: it marks out a small, quiet space that's yours for a few minutes each day, soft enough to sit on with a cushion and calm enough to look at. Our designs are deliberately gentle: a single brushstroke enso circle, the raked ripples of a zen garden, a lotus, a soft sunrise gradient or a plain, quiet color. Every rug is printed into soft velvet and goes in the washing machine.
Not a yoga mat
Many people search for a meditation mat or a yoga rug, so it's worth being clear. Our rugs are printed velvet, made for sitting, kneeling and lying still. They aren't sticky, cushioned yoga mats, so they won't give you the grip you need for standing poses, downward dog or a flowing vinyasa practice. For an active yoga session, lay your yoga mat on top of the rug or beside it, and use the rug for the seated meditation and the final rest at the end.

| Sunrise gradient | Soft peach fading into gold and cream | Morning corners by a window |
| Ocean horizon | A calm sea meeting a pale sky | Bedrooms, coastal rooms |
| Quiet solid | Sage, sand, slate or soft grey | Anywhere, behind a cushion |
The enso
In Zen Buddhism, the enso is a circle drawn in a single, unrepeatable brushstroke of ink, often left slightly open. Monks and calligraphers have painted them for centuries as an expression of a moment of clear mind; no two are alike, and imperfection is part of the point. An enso rug, one black brushstroke circle on warm cream, is a beautifully simple design for a meditation corner. On a round rug from 2.6 to 4.6 ft (80 to 140 cm) across, the circle sits right where you do. Our round rugs page shows each size in a room.
Zen gardens
Japanese dry gardens, called karesansui, use raked gravel and carefully placed stones to suggest water and islands. The most famous, at Ryoan-ji temple in Kyoto, has fifteen stones arranged so that from any seat on the viewing platform one is always hidden. A zen garden rug, with soft grey ripples flowing around a few stones, brings that sense of stillness to a bedroom or a meditation room.
Lotus flowers
The lotus grows from muddy water yet blooms clean and bright, which is why it has long been a symbol of awakening in Hindu and Buddhist traditions. A lotus opening on still water, in soft pink, white and green, is a gentle design for a yoga or meditation space. For lotus-centered patterns, see our mandala rugs.
Setting up a meditation corner
A meditation corner needs very little: a rug to define the space, a cushion to sit on, and something calming nearby, a plant, a candle or a window. A round rug of 3.3 to 4.6 ft (100 to 140 cm), or a 2.6×3.9 ft rectangle, is enough for one person; a 3.3×5 ft rug fits two. Many people sit on a firm round cushion, called a zafu in Zen practice, set on a flatter mat known as a zabuton. Our rugs are 5 to 7 mm thick, so they're softer than a bare floor but thinner than a padded zabuton; for long sits, add a folded blanket under your knees.
Standard or Premium for sitting
For a meditation rug, Premium is usually the better choice: 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², soft and warm to sit on for twenty minutes or more. If your corner is on a slippery wood or tile floor and you'll be moving your cushion around, choose Standard: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put.
Mindfulness at home
Meditation has deep roots in many traditions, and over the last few decades it has also become part of everyday life for millions of people. In 1979, Jon Kabat-Zinn founded a mindfulness-based stress reduction program at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, helping bring secular mindfulness into hospitals, schools and workplaces. Whatever your practice, having a dedicated spot makes it easier to return to each day.
Calm-down corners for kids
Many classrooms and homes now have a calm-down corner, a cozy spot where a child can go to breathe, settle big feelings and reset. A soft round rug with a gentle design, a cloud, a calm sea or a simple circle to trace with a finger while breathing, makes the space inviting. Choose Standard on classroom floors. For more, see our classroom rugs and cloud rugs.
Sunrise and morning practice
For people who meditate first thing in the morning, a sunrise gradient rug, soft peach fading into gold and cream, placed by an east-facing window, turns the habit into a small daily ritual. In the evening, an ocean horizon in muted blues helps the day wind down. For more sea designs, see our ocean rugs.
Nature and calm
Many people find that natural imagery helps them settle: moss and ferns, a still forest, a smooth stone. A rug with soft green leaves, or simply a sage or moss-colored solid, brings that feeling indoors. For leafy designs, see our botanical rugs.
Walking meditation
Some traditions practice meditation while walking slowly, paying attention to each step. A long runner, a custom size up to 10 ft, in a calm solid or a soft zen-garden ripple, gives you a defined path down a hallway or along the side of a room. Choose Standard, which stays put underfoot.
Small apartments
You don't need a spare room to meditate. In a studio apartment, a small round rug that tucks beside the sofa or under a window is enough to signal that this is your quiet spot, and it rolls away easily if you need the floor for something else.
Sharing a space
For couples or families who sit together, a 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft rug gives two or three people room for their cushions. A shared practice spot can become a small, steady ritual for a household.
Bedrooms
A corner of the bedroom is the most common place for a home meditation spot. A small round rug beside the bed, with a cushion tucked under the nightstand, makes it easy to sit for a few minutes before sleep or after waking. Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Studios and wellness spaces
For yoga studios, meditation centers, therapists' offices and massage rooms, a calm rug at reception or in a quiet room sets the tone before a session begins. Standard holds up best to busy foot traffic. Our office and studio rugs page has more ideas.
Sacred symbols
Some meditation designs draw on sacred symbols, like the Om syllable of Hindu and Buddhist traditions. If a symbol is sacred to you, you may prefer a design without it, or a rug kept in a quiet, rarely walked space. For rugs made specifically for daily prayer, see our prayer rugs.
Colors
Meditation rugs look best in soft, quiet colors: sage, sand, oatmeal, slate, pale blue and warm grey, with black ink for an enso and soft pink for a lotus. Avoid busy, high-contrast patterns if you want the rug to fade into the background as you settle.

Gifts
A meditation rug makes a thoughtful gift for someone starting a practice, a yoga teacher or a friend going through a stressful time. An enso circle or a quiet solid in their favorite color is the safest choice.
Your own design
Want an enso you painted yourself, a word or a mantra in your own handwriting or a calm photo of a favorite place? Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, or as a round rug. Please only send artwork you're allowed to use. Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned.
Sizes, shipping and returns
Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft, and round rugs from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across. Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.
Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so your quiet corner stays fresh, wash after wash.
Cushions, posture and the breath
Many people meditate on a simple setup borrowed from Zen practice: a round cushion called a zafu, which raises the hips, placed on a flat, padded mat called a zabuton, which cushions the knees and ankles. A rug beneath both defines the space and keeps the floor warm, especially on tile or wood.
Posture matters more than flexibility. Some people sit cross-legged, others kneel in seiza with a cushion or a small bench under the hips, and many sit in the Burmese position, with both legs folded flat in front. Sitting on a chair, feet planted on the rug, is just as valid. The aim is a straight, relaxed spine and a body that can stay still without strain.
A common beginner practice is counting breaths: in and out is one, in and out is two, up to ten, then starting again, and simply returning to one whenever the mind wanders. A rug with a quiet focal point, an enso circle, a single lotus or a soft gradient, gives the eyes somewhere to rest at the start of each sit.
Choose a size that fits the cushion, the mat and a little space around them, often a round rug of 3.9 to 4.6 ft (120 to 140 cm) or a 3.3×5 ft rectangle, so the corner feels like a dedicated place rather than an afterthought.
FAQ
Questions about Meditation Rugs
Can I use a meditation rug as a yoga mat?
Not for active yoga. It's printed velvet, not a sticky, cushioned mat. Lay your yoga mat on top or beside it for standing poses.
What size rug do I need for a meditation corner?
A round rug of 3.3 to 4.6 ft (100 to 140 cm) or a 2.6×3.9 ft rectangle suits one person; a 3.3×5 ft rug fits two.
Is the rug soft enough to sit on?
Yes. Premium is 7 mm plush velvet, soft and warm for seated practice. For long sits, add a cushion and a folded blanket.
What is an enso?
A circle drawn in a single brushstroke, a classic expression of a clear mind in Zen Buddhism, and one of our calmest designs.
Do you make rugs for classroom calm corners?
Yes. Soft round rugs with gentle designs like clouds or a calm sea, in Standard for its non-slip back on classroom floors.
Standard or Premium for meditation?
Premium, usually: the 7 mm plush pile is soft and warm for long sits. If your meditation corner is on slick tile or wood and the rug needs to stay put, choose Standard.
Can I print my own mantra or enso on a rug?
Yes. Brush your own enso, write a mantra by hand, or send any artwork, and we'll print it on a custom rug up to 5′11″ × 10′. Custom rugs can't be returned.
Are meditation rugs machine washable?
Yes. Ensō, Zen garden and sunrise designs wash on a gentle cold cycle; dry them flat, and your quiet corner stays fresh.
