About Mandala Rugs
A circle that draws you in
A mandala is a pattern that grows outward from a single point, ring after ring of petals, dots and arches repeating in perfect symmetry, and it has a calming effect that few other designs can match. A mandala rug puts that quiet focus at the center of a room: a round rug where the pattern fills the whole circle, a boho medallion in warm terracotta and teal, a crisp black-and-white line drawing or a soft watercolor in blush and sage. Ours are printed edge to edge on soft velvet, so the finest lines and dots stay sharp, and every rug goes in the washing machine.

What a mandala is
Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning circle. In Hindu and Buddhist traditions, mandalas are sacred diagrams that represent the universe, with a center symbolizing a still point from which everything unfolds, and they have long been used as aids to meditation. Tibetan Buddhist monks are known for creating intricate mandalas from colored sand over days or even weeks, then sweeping them away when they are finished, a lesson in impermanence. Radial patterns like these appear across many cultures, from the rose windows of Gothic cathedrals to the star-patterned tilework of Islamic architecture.
Inspired by the form
Our mandala rugs are decorative radial patterns inspired by the form, not copies of specific sacred mandalas used in religious practice. If a mandala holds deep spiritual meaning for you or your guests, you may prefer to keep it somewhere less trafficked, like a quiet meditation corner rather than a busy entryway.
The round mandala rug
A mandala is a circle by nature, so a round rug is its perfect shape: the pattern radiates from the center to the edge, with nothing cut off. On a 4.6 to 5.9 ft (140 to 180 cm) round rug, it's a striking centerpiece under a round coffee table or in the middle of a bedroom. On a smaller 2.6 to 3.9 ft (80 to 120 cm) rug, it marks out a reading nook or a meditation spot. Our round rugs page shows each size in a room.
Boho mandalas
In bohemian decor, mandalas are everywhere: on tapestries, cushions and bedspreads in warm, earthy colors. A boho mandala rug in terracotta, mustard, teal and cream pairs beautifully with macramé, rattan, layered textiles and plenty of plants. For more boho favorites, see our elephant rugs, whose ornate boho elephants share the same spirit.
Black-and-white line art
A mandala drawn in fine black lines on white, like a page from an adult coloring book, is the most modern take on the design. It's crisp and graphic, suiting a minimalist living room, a studio or a bedroom with black and white decor. Adult coloring books full of mandalas became a phenomenon around 2015, and many people still find coloring them a relaxing way to unwind.
Watercolor mandalas
A mandala painted in soft watercolor washes of blush, sage, lavender and pale gold has a gentle, dreamy quality. It suits a calm bedroom, a reading nook or even a nursery, where a pastel mandala feels soothing and sweet.
Mandalas and the mind
The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung drew a small mandala in his notebook almost every day for a period during the First World War years, and came to see these circular drawings as reflections of a person's inner state and a search for wholeness. Many people today use mandalas the same way: drawing, coloring or simply gazing at one to slow down and focus. A mandala rug in a quiet corner can serve as a gentle visual anchor for that kind of pause.
Meditation and yoga corners
A round mandala rug is a natural base for a meditation corner: place a floor cushion at its center, a candle or a small plant nearby and let the pattern frame the space. Choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², for a soft, warm floor to sit on. Our rugs aren't sticky yoga mats, so for a flowing practice with standing poses, lay your yoga mat on top or beside it. For more, see our meditation rugs.
Chakra colors
A mandala in seven rings of color, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet, reflects the seven chakras of yoga traditions. It's a bright, uplifting design for a meditation room, a yoga studio or a creative space.
The lotus at the center
The lotus, which rises clean from muddy water, is a symbol of purity and awakening in Hindu and Buddhist traditions, and it often sits at the heart of a mandala. A lotus-centered mandala in soft pink and gold is a calm, meaningful design for a bedroom or a meditation corner.
Living rooms
In a living room, a large round mandala under a round coffee table, or a medallion-style mandala on a 5×7 ft rectangle in front of the sofa, adds pattern and warmth. Mandalas also work beautifully on rectangles, with the medallion at the center and corner details, like a traditional Persian-style layout. Our living room rugs page has more layouts.
Bedrooms
In a boho or calm bedroom, a mandala rug at the foot of the bed, or a round mandala beside it, creates a soft, grounding space for mornings and evenings. Pair it with linen bedding, a woven throw and a few hanging plants. Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Dorms and teen rooms
Mandala tapestries are a dorm-room classic, and a matching mandala rug completes the look. A round rug in a small dorm room adds instant warmth. Choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², on hard dorm floors.
Studios and spas
For yoga studios, massage rooms, spas and wellness practices, a mandala rug at reception or in a treatment room sets a peaceful tone. Standard holds up best to busy foot traffic. Our office and studio rugs page has more ideas.
Henna-inspired patterns
The fine, flowing lines of henna, the plant-based body art worn for weddings and festivals across South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, share a mandala's love of symmetry, petals and dots. A henna-inspired mandala in warm rust on cream is an intricate, elegant design for a bedroom or a dressing area.
Hallways and entryways
A mandala medallion at the center of a runner, with borders running its length, turns a hallway into a calm passage. Just inside the front door, a small round mandala makes a warm welcome; keep it indoors, out of the weather. Choose Standard for both, for its grip on hard floors.
Pairing with furniture
Mandala rugs look at home with low wooden furniture, floor cushions, rattan and cane, woven baskets and brass lanterns. For a cleaner look, pair a black-and-white line-art mandala with a white sofa and a single large plant. Keep the rest of the room simple and let the rug be the pattern.
Colors
Mandala designs look lovely in warm boho tones of terracotta, mustard and teal; cool indigo, navy and white; soft watercolor pastels; and crisp black and white. Indigo and white is the most versatile and timeless; terracotta and teal is the most bohemian.

Your own mandala
Want a mandala in your exact colors, a design with your initials at the center or a mandala you've drawn yourself? Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, or as a round rug. Please only send artwork you're allowed to use. Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned.
Sizes, shipping and returns
Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft, and round rugs from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across. Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.
Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so every line and dot stays crisp, wash after wash.
Sand mandalas
In Tibetan Buddhism, some of the most remarkable mandalas are made of colored sand. Monks spend days, sometimes weeks, placing millions of grains by hand through small metal funnels, building an intricate circular design that represents a sacred palace and the path to enlightenment. When the mandala is complete, it is ceremonially swept away, and the sand is often poured into flowing water, a reminder that everything is impermanent.
Sand mandala ceremonies are sometimes held in museums, universities and temples around the world, where visitors can watch the slow work unfold. The Kalachakra mandala, one of the most complex, is associated with large public teachings.
A rug can't capture that impermanence, but it can honor the beauty and patience of the form. A design inspired by the fine, granular texture of sand art, with concentric rings in saffron, turquoise, red and white, brings a sense of calm focus to a meditation corner. A softer, more abstract circle in the same colors suits a living room or a yoga space.
As with any design drawn from a living spiritual tradition, we keep our mandala rugs as decorative patterns inspired by the form, not copies of sacred religious images, and we think they're best placed with care, in a calm, clean space where the circle can be enjoyed.
