About Expedition 33 Rugs
Once a year, the Paintress wakes
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, from the French studio Sandfall Interactive, was released in April 2025 and quickly became one of the most acclaimed games of the year. Its premise is haunting: every year, a towering figure called the Paintress wakes and paints a number on her Monolith, and everyone of that age turns to petals and vanishes, an event called the Gommage. Each year, the people of the city of Lumière send an expedition across the sea to stop her before she paints again. You lead Expedition 33.
The game's look draws on Belle Époque France, which gives it a painterly style that suits a rug better than most games: gilded details, rich reds and soft, brushy skies.
The game blends a turn-based role-playing system with real-time dodges and parries, a story about grief and love, and an art style inspired by the Belle Époque, French painting and the play of light and shadow its title refers to. An Expedition 33 rug brings that painterly beauty into your room. Ours are printed into short velvet, so soft brushwork, deep shadows and the red of falling petals come out with depth, and they go in the washing machine.
Clair obscur
The title borrows a term from art history: clair-obscur, better known in English by its Italian name, chiaroscuro, the painter's technique of strong contrast between light and dark, used by artists like Caravaggio and Rembrandt to give figures drama and depth. The game's look follows it, with figures lit against deep darkness and golden light breaking through gloom. A chiaroscuro-style design is the most artistic rug you can choose from any game, at home in a study or living room like a painting laid on the floor.
The Paintress and the Monolith
The Paintress, a vast, mysterious figure seated beside a towering Monolith on the far side of the sea, is the game's central image, visible from Lumière across the water. The Monolith, with its painted number, is the countdown that shapes everyone's life. A design of the Paintress and her Monolith, pale against a dark sky, is striking, solemn and unforgettable.
The Gommage
When the number changes, those of that age dissolve into drifting red petals. It's terrible and beautiful at once, and the image of petals swirling in the wind recurs throughout the game. A falling-petals design, red petals scattered across a cream or dark ground, is an elegant, abstract rug that reads as a floral pattern to visitors and carries the game's whole meaning for players.
Lumière
Lumière, the expedition's home, is a city inspired by Belle Époque Paris, with its ornate facades, wrought-iron balconies, cafés and a broken, twisted tower rising from the ruins, rebuilt on an island after a catastrophe. Its look, Art Nouveau curves, gilded details and a soft, nostalgic light, makes a beautiful, refined rug for a living room or a study. Lovers of ornamental design will also enjoy our art deco rugs.
The expedition
Expedition 33's characters are some of the most praised in recent games:
- Gustave, the engineer with a mechanical arm, who leads the expedition at the start.
- Maelle, the young duelist with a fencer's grace.
- Lune, the scholar-mage studying the expeditions before them.
- Sciel, the warm, calm warrior with a dark sense of humor.
- Monoco, the shape-shifting Gestral, and Verso, the mysterious stranger.
A portrait of the expedition together, ready to set out across the sea, is a moving design for fans who know what lies ahead of them.
Esquie
Esquie, the huge, round, gentle creature who carries the expedition across the world, swimming, flying and squeezing through places he really shouldn't, is the game's most loved companion. His soft shape and sweet expression make him perfect for a round rug: cute, cheerful and a lovely choice for a bedroom or a younger fan's room.
The Gestrals
The Gestrals, odd, wooden-looking creatures with a love of fighting tournaments and absurd humor, live in their own village and provide some of the game's funniest moments. A Gestral design, all angular limbs and painted faces, is a playful, quirky rug for fans who loved their arena challenges.
The expeditions before
Expedition 33 is far from the first to set out. Along the way, the team finds the camps, flags and journals of the many expeditions that came before, each leaving notes, farewells and warnings for whoever might follow. Reading them is one of the game's most affecting experiences. A journal-page design, handwritten notes and a pressed flower on aged paper, is a quiet, beautiful rug for a reading corner, and deeply meaningful to anyone who read them all.
Parry, dodge, paint
Its combat is turn-based but never passive: players time dodges, parries and jumps against each enemy attack, and build their characters with Pictos and Luminas that change how every fight plays. Mastering a perfect parry against a difficult boss is a thrill. A design built around a duel, Maelle's rapier raised against a towering Nevron, captures that tension.
Mimes and French charm
The game wears its French heritage proudly, from Belle Époque architecture and chanson-style songs to its strangest optional foes, silent mimes in striped shirts and white face paint who appear across the world. Their black-and-white stripes make a witty, graphic design, and a fun inside joke for anyone who fought one.
A debut
Remarkably, Expedition 33 was the first game from Sandfall Interactive, a relatively small team in the south of France. Its success with players and critics alike made it one of the great independent-studio stories of recent years, and many fans feel a personal attachment to it for exactly that reason.
The Continent
Beyond the sea, the expedition crosses a strange, painted world: flying waters, forests of coral, gardens frozen in time, oceans of ink and ruins left by earlier expeditions. Each region looks like a different canvas. A landscape design, a surreal, dreamlike scene in soft color and deep shadow, is one of the most beautiful game-inspired rugs there is, and it suits a calm bedroom or living room.
The music
Lorien Testard's soundtrack, with soaring vocals, French chanson, orchestral swells and gentle piano, has been praised as one of the finest in years, and many players listen to it long after finishing the game. An Expedition 33 rug in a music room, beside a piano or a record player, is a fitting tribute to it.
A painterly room
Because the game looks so much like art, its rugs suit rooms that aren't built around gaming at all. Pair a chiaroscuro or Lumière design with dark walls, gilt-framed prints, warm brass lamps and velvet or linen upholstery, and the room feels like a small gallery. Keep the lighting low and directional, a reading lamp, a picture light, to echo the game's play of light and shadow.
A gaming setup
Under the gaming chair, choose Standard in 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft: its 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back lets wheels roll freely and stays put through a tense parry-timed boss fight. If your shelf also holds Final Fantasy or Persona 5, Expedition 33 sits naturally among the great turn-based RPGs. See our gaming rugs for more.
Your own expedition
Some fans paint their own expedition flag, with their own number and motto, or want a favorite screenshot printed large. Our custom rugs print any artwork in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, or as a round rug up to 5.9 ft (180 cm).
Colors and rooms
Expedition 33's palette is painterly: deep blacks and umbers, warm gold light, cream, faded blues and the sharp red of petals. It's one of the most elegant palettes in gaming, easy to pair with dark wood, brass and gallery-style decor. A petals design in red on cream is the brightest option; a chiaroscuro portrait is the most dramatic.
Sizes and levels
Esquie or the Monolith suits a 3.3 to 4.6 ft (100 to 140 cm) round rug. A Lumière street, the expedition or a Continent landscape suits a rectangle, 4×6 or 5×7 ft. A falling-petals pattern works at any size. For a living room or bedroom, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, which is softer and warmer.
Gifts
An Expedition 33 rug is a thoughtful gift for someone moved by its story, or anyone who loves painting and beautiful games. If you aren't sure which design to choose, Esquie or the falling petals are the safest choices, loved by every player who reached the end of the journey. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that.
Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes. The design is printed into the fibers, so the shadows stay deep and the light stays golden for years.
A note on the game
Monoco and Verso
Two of the expedition's companions stand out for fans. Monoco, a gentleman Gestral, can take on the skills of the enemies he defeats, wearing their masks and forms with theatrical flair. Verso, a mysterious swordsman, knows more about the Paintress than he lets on. A rug of Monoco's collection of masks, or of Verso's silhouette against a painted sky, is a striking design for players who finished the journey.
