About Wavy Rugs
Nothing straight about it at all
A wavy rug takes familiar patterns, checkerboards, stripes and grids, and lets them bend, ripple and flow, as if seen through water or a funhouse mirror. It's one of the most playful and popular rug styles of recent years, part of a broader love of soft, organic shapes in furniture, mirrors and lamps. Ours are printed edge to edge on soft velvet, so every curve stays smooth and every color stays crisp, and the whole rug goes in your washing machine.
Wavy styles
| Style | The look | Best in |
|---|---|---|
| Wavy checkerboard | A checkerboard that warps and ripples | Bedrooms, dorms, studios |
| Wavy pastel stripes | Soft stripes that curve across the rug | Nurseries, bedrooms, living rooms |
| Groovy 70s curves | Wide bands of orange, brown, mustard and cream | Retro living rooms, dens |
| Liquid swirls | Flowing marbled shapes, like paint in water | Modern living rooms, creative spaces |
| Op-art ripples | Black and white lines that seem to move | Modern rooms, game rooms |
| Wavy-edged rugs | A plain or patterned rug with a scalloped, wavy outline | Bedrooms, entryways |
The wavy checkerboard gives a dorm or bedroom a playful look, while pastel stripes suit a nursery.
Wavy checkerboards
The wavy checkerboard is the signature of the style: a classic grid of squares that bends and stretches, as if it's melting or floating. In pastel pairs, lilac and mint, pink and butter yellow, baby blue and cream, it's the heart of the so-called Danish pastel look, with wavy mirrors, chunky candles, colorful glassware and soft, rounded furniture. In black and white, it's bolder, more graphic and a little more grown-up. For classic straight checks, see our checkered rugs.
Pastel wavy stripes
Soft stripes that curve gently across a rug are calmer than a wavy checkerboard, a lovely choice for a nursery, a bedroom or a living room that wants a little movement without too much pattern. Two or three pastel colors on cream is the easiest combination to live with. For more pastel designs, see our cute rugs.
Groovy 70s curves
The 1970s loved a curve: wide, swooping bands of burnt orange, chocolate brown, mustard and cream ran across walls, vans and wallpaper. A groovy 70s wavy rug brings that warm, retro energy back to a living room, a den or a bedroom with a velvet sofa and a few plants. For more from the era, see our retro rugs and mid-century modern rugs.
Liquid swirls
Inspired by marbled paper and paint swirling in water, liquid swirl rugs feel fluid and artistic. In soft neutrals, they suit a calm, modern living room; in bright colors, they suit a creative studio or a playful bedroom. For stone-like swirls, see our marble rugs.
Op-art ripples
Black and white lines that bend and ripple can create the illusion of movement, a technique made famous by op art in the 1960s. An op-art wavy rug is a striking statement piece for a modern room or a game room. Use it where the rest of the decor is simple, so the pattern has plenty of room to play. For more graphic designs, see our geometric rugs.
Wavy-edged rugs
Sometimes the wave is in the outline rather than the pattern: a rug with a soft, scalloped, wavy edge, like a cloud or a flower. Our shaped rugs can be cut with a wavy outline, in sizes from 80×80 up to 160×180 cm, in a solid color or with a wavy pattern inside. A wavy-edged rug beside a bed or under a round table feels soft, friendly and playful.
Organic shapes in decor
Wavy rugs are part of a wider move away from hard lines: curved sofas, wavy mirrors, bubble lamps, mushroom-shaped lights and squiggle-handled mugs. A wavy rug ties all of those pieces together beautifully. If your room already has a wavy mirror or a curvy chair, a wavy rug in matching colors makes the whole look feel intentional.
Why curves work
Most rooms are full of straight lines: walls, doors, windows, shelves, tables and beds. A wavy rug softens all of that. Curves draw the eye, add a sense of movement and make a space feel more relaxed and approachable, which is why designers often add one curved element to an otherwise rectangular room. A rug is the easiest place to do it.
Mixing wavy with other patterns
A wavy rug pairs well with straight checks and stripes in the same colors, with simple florals and with solid textures like bouclé, velvet and linen. A pastel wavy checkerboard with a daisy-print cushion, or a 70s wave with a striped throw, feels layered and fun. For more, see our daisy rugs.
Hallways
A long, narrow wavy runner turns a hallway into something that seems to flow from one room to the next. Our standard sizes are rectangular, but a custom size lets you order a narrow rug up to 10 ft long. Choose Standard there, which stays put as people walk by.
Kitchens and bathrooms
A small wavy rug in front of a kitchen sink or a bathroom vanity brings a cheerful touch to rooms full of hard surfaces. Choose Standard for its grip on tile. One honest note for bathrooms: our rugs are printed velvet, not thick, quick-drying bath mats, so keep one by the vanity or the door rather than right where you step out of the shower.
Gifts
A wavy rug is a great gift for a college student decorating a first dorm, a friend who loves the pastel look or anyone with a wavy mirror already on the wall. A pastel wavy checkerboard is the safest choice; a custom palette is the most personal.
Bedrooms and dorms
A wavy checkerboard or pastel stripe rug is one of the quickest ways to give a bedroom or a dorm room personality. A 4×6 or 5×7 ft rug at the foot of the bed, or a 2.6×3.9 ft rug beside it, works well. For the softest bedside rug, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m²; on a hard dorm floor, Standard grips better. Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Living rooms
In a living room, a wavy rug under a coffee table adds movement and fun. Pair a pastel wavy checkerboard with a white or cream sofa and colorful cushions, or a groovy 70s wave with a rust velvet sofa and walnut furniture. A 5×7 ft rug is our largest standard size; custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Our living room rugs page has more layouts.
Studios, offices and desks
For a creative studio or a home office, a wavy rug under the desk chair adds energy to the workspace. Choose Standard: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², in 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft, which stays put and lets wheels roll freely. A round wavy rug under the chair is a fun alternative.
Nurseries and kids' rooms
Soft pastel waves make a gentle, happy nursery theme, and brighter wavy checks suit a playroom. Choose Premium for tummy time and floor play, and Standard's non-slip back once your child is running on a smooth floor. Our kids and nursery rugs have more ideas.
Choosing colors
For a calm room, choose two soft pastels on cream. For a bold room, choose high contrast, black and white or red and pink. For a retro room, choose orange, brown and mustard. For a coastal room, choose blues and whites, like ripples on water. If you have a specific palette in mind, our custom rugs can print any wavy pattern in your exact colors.
Round wavy rugs
A round rug with a wavy checkerboard or concentric ripples spreading from the center, like a stone dropped in a pond, is a striking choice for a reading corner or an entryway. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across. Our round rugs page shows each size in a room.
Standard or Premium
Standard is best under desk chairs, in dorms, entryways and anywhere with a hard or slippery floor, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best in bedrooms, nurseries and living rooms. Both are printed the same way, so curves stay smooth and colors stay crisp, and both go in the washing machine.
Sizes, shipping and returns
Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and wavy-edged shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.
Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the waves stay smooth and the colors stay bright, wash after wash, year after year.
Waves in nature
Wavy patterns feel calming partly because they're everywhere in nature. Wind sculpts ripples into sand dunes and the beach at low tide. Water forms waves, eddies and reflections that never repeat exactly. Wood grain flows around knots in soft, irregular lines, and slices of agate reveal bands of color that curve like contour lines on a map.
Designers borrow those forms to bring a sense of movement and softness into rooms full of straight lines and right angles. A rug inspired by sand ripples, in warm beige and cream, makes a quiet, natural design for a living room or a bedroom. A pattern of water reflections in blues and greens suits a bathroom or a sunroom, and a wood-grain inspired wave in honey tones brings warmth to a study or an office.
Because these patterns come from nature, they pair easily with natural materials: linen, wool throws, rattan, stone and plants. They make a room feel relaxed without the bold retro look of a wavy checkerboard.
FAQ
Questions about Wavy Rugs
What is a wavy rug?
A rug whose pattern bends and ripples, such as a wavy checkerboard or curving stripes, or a rug with a soft, wavy outline.
Are wavy rugs machine washable?
Yes. Wavy checkerboards and pastel stripes wash on a gentle cold cycle; dry them flat, and the waves stay smooth.
Do you make wavy checkered rugs?
Yes. Wavy checkerboards in pastel pairs like lilac and mint or pink and yellow, or in bold black and white.
What is the Danish pastel look?
A soft, playful style with pastel colors, wavy checks, wavy mirrors, chunky candles and rounded furniture. Wavy rugs are at its heart.
Do you make rugs with a wavy edge?
Yes. Shaped rugs can be cut with a soft, wavy outline, in sizes from 80×80 up to 160×180 cm, in a solid color or pattern.
Do you make 70s wavy rugs?
Yes. Wide, swooping bands of burnt orange, chocolate brown, mustard and cream for a groovy, retro room.
Which wavy rug goes under a desk chair?
Standard, 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft. A wavy checkerboard or an op-art ripple turns the desk area into a little 70s moment, and the faux leather back keeps it from creeping.
Can I get a wavy rug in my own colors?
Yes. Send your color palette, a swatch or a photo of your room, and we'll print any wavy pattern in those exact colors on a custom rug up to 5′11″ × 10′. Custom rugs can't be returned.
