About Snake Rugs
Two kinds of snake rug
A snake rug can mean two very different things. The first is a snakeskin print: the scales of a python or a viper as a pattern, sleek, textured and fashion-forward, at home in a modern living room. The second is a rug that shows a snake itself, coiled into a circle or winding the length of a hallway, a playful, eye-catching design that kids and reptile lovers adore. We make both, printed edge to edge on soft velvet, so no real skin is used, the scales come out with fine detail, and every rug goes in the washing machine.
Snakeskin prints
Snakeskin is the most subtle of the animal prints. From a distance, its scales read almost like a woven texture; up close, they reveal intricate diamonds and gradients. That makes a snakeskin rug easier to live with than a bold leopard or zebra: it adds pattern and depth without shouting.
| What it looks like | Pairs with | |
|---|---|---|
| Python in cream and grey | Large, irregular patches outlined in darker scales | Neutral rooms, linen, pale wood |
| Python in brown and tan | Warm, natural, earthy | Leather, walnut, rattan, plants |
| Black snakeskin | Fine dark scales with a subtle sheen effect | Black furniture, brass, moody rooms |
| Green snakeskin | Emerald or olive scales | Velvet sofas, gold accents, jungle prints |
| Diamondback pattern | Bold, repeating diamonds down the back | Western and desert-inspired rooms |
Python in cream and grey is the easiest pattern to live with, while green snakeskin brings more drama to a room with velvet and gold.
If you'd like snakeskin in an unexpected color, blush pink, cobalt blue or white on white, our custom rugs can print it in any shade.
Snakeskin in fashion and interiors
Python and other snakeskin prints have long been a staple of fashion, from boots and bags to jackets and heels, prized for their luxurious, slightly dangerous edge. In interiors, a snakeskin rug brings that same polish to a living room or a dressing area. It pairs especially well with velvet, brass, glass and dark wood, and it sits comfortably beside other animal prints when the colors are related.
Coiled snake rugs
A snake coiled into a spiral, its head resting on top, is one of the most striking shapes for a rug. Our shaped rugs can be cut to that outline, in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). A coiled snake rug in bright green or banded colors is a fun surprise beside a bed or in a reading corner; in realistic python tones, it's a bold design piece for a living room. Round rugs, from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm), can also carry a coiled snake design within the circle. Our round rugs page shows each size in a room.
Snake runners
A long snake winding down a hallway is one of the most playful rugs there is, and it turns a plain corridor into something every visitor remembers. Since a snake is naturally long and narrow, it suits a runner perfectly. Our standard sizes are rectangular, and our shaped rugs go up to 5.2×5.9 ft (160×180 cm), so for a long snake we print the snake on a narrow custom runner, up to 10 ft long, sized to your hallway. Choose Standard: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put as people walk over it.
For kids and reptile lovers
Many children go through a reptile phase, and some never leave it. A friendly cartoon snake, a jungle scene with a python curled around a branch or a rug of colorful snakes is a joyful design for a child's room or a playroom. It can even be part of a game: follow the snake from its tail all the way to its head. On a hard floor, choose Standard so it stays put when kids run across it, and remember every rug goes in the washing machine. Our kids play rugs have more ideas.
The ouroboros and snake symbols
Snakes are among the oldest symbols in human history. The ouroboros, a snake swallowing its own tail to form a circle, appears in ancient Egyptian and Greek art as a symbol of eternity and renewal, and it makes a perfect design for a round rug. The rod of Asclepius, a single snake wound around a staff, has long been a symbol of medicine, a meaningful gift for a doctor or a nurse. Because snakes shed their skin, they're also widely seen as symbols of transformation and new beginnings.
The Year of the Snake
In the Chinese zodiac, the snake is the sixth of the twelve animals, associated with wisdom, intuition and elegance. A snake rug makes a thoughtful gift for someone born in a Year of the Snake, or a meaningful present for the Lunar New Year.
Snakes in nature
There are thousands of snake species, living on every continent except Antarctica, and their patterns are some of the most beautiful in the animal world. Many are camouflage, the mottled browns of a python blending into forest leaves, while others are warnings, like the bright bands of a coral snake. Those patterns are why snakeskin works so well as design: they were shaped by nature to be striking, subtle or both at once. A design inspired by a specific snake, a ball python, a green tree python curled on a branch or a banded king snake, is a lovely choice for a reptile keeper's home.
Western and desert style
The bold diamonds of a rattlesnake's back are part of the visual language of the American Southwest, alongside cowboy boots, turquoise and desert sunsets. A diamondback-pattern rug suits a western-inspired room with leather, wood and wool blankets. For more designs in that spirit, see our western rugs.
Entryways
Inside the front door, a 2×3 or 2.6×3.9 ft snakeskin rug makes a sleek first impression and hides everyday dust well. Our rugs are for indoor use, so keep it inside rather than out in the weather, and choose Standard for its grip on tile and wood.
In the living room
A snakeskin area rug under a coffee table adds texture and sophistication without overwhelming a room. Cream or grey python suits a calm, neutral living room; black snakeskin suits a dramatic one; green suits a room with plants and gold accents. A 5×7 ft rug is our largest standard size; custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. For the softest feel underfoot, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m². Our living room rugs page has more layouts.
Dressing rooms and bedrooms
Snakeskin's fashion connection makes it a natural fit for a dressing room, a walk-in closet or a bedroom with a vanity. A small python rug in front of a mirror, or a black snakeskin rug at the foot of the bed, adds a polished, boutique feel. For darker, moodier designs, see our gothic rugs.
Snakes in the jungle
For a lush, painterly look, a snake winding through tropical leaves and flowers turns a rug into a piece of art. It suits rooms full of plants, maximalist interiors and bold wallpaper. See our botanical rugs for companions.
Mixing with other animal prints
Snakeskin's subtle texture makes it one of the easiest animal prints to mix. A python rug with a leopard cushion, or a black snakeskin with a zebra throw, feels layered rather than busy when the colors are related. For more, see our leopard rugs, zebra rugs, tiger rugs, cow print rugs and the full range of animal print rugs.
Printed versus real skin
Real snakeskin is used in small fashion items, not floors, and it comes with obvious concerns. A printed velvet rug gives you the look of snakeskin at full rug size, soft underfoot, machine washable and in any color, with no animal involved. The trade-off is that it doesn't have the texture of real scales: it's smooth velvet with a printed pattern.
Standard or Premium
Standard is best for hallways, runners, entryways, playrooms and anywhere with a hard or slippery floor, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best in living rooms, bedrooms and dressing rooms. Both are printed the same way, so every scale stays crisp, and both go in the washing machine.
Sizes, shipping and returns
Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and coiled-snake shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′, including long, narrow snake runners. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.
Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the scales stay sharp and the colors stay rich, wash after wash, no shedding required.
Snake species and their patterns
Snakes wear some of nature's most beautiful patterns. The ball python has rich brown blotches outlined in gold and black, while the corn snake is covered in orange and red saddles edged in black, like the kernels of Indian corn it was named after. King snakes often have crisp black-and-white or black-and-yellow bands, and the green tree python is a brilliant emerald with a scattering of white scales along its back.
Those patterns inspire rugs that feel more natural than a generic snakeskin. A ball python print in warm browns and golds suits a living room as a soft animal-print neutral. A corn snake's orange saddles make a bold, warm rug for a reptile lover's room, and a green tree python pattern brings a jungle-like glow to a bathroom or a plant-filled corner.
