About Guitar Rugs
Turn it up
For anyone who plays, the guitar isn't just an instrument; it's the thing you reach for when you get home, the poster on the wall when you were fourteen and the sound of every favorite record. A guitar rug brings that into the room: a rug cut to the outline of an electric or acoustic guitar, a long fretboard running down the hallway, a scatter of colorful picks or a vintage sunburst glowing in a practice corner. It's also practical, giving amps, pedalboards and stools a non-slip place to sit. Every rug is printed into soft velvet and goes in the washing machine.

Guitar-shaped rugs
A rug cut to the outline of a guitar, with its curved body, long neck and headstock, is a fun, eye-catching piece for a teenager's bedroom or a music room. An electric guitar shape in bold red, black or electric blue feels rock and roll; an acoustic shape in warm honey and spruce tones feels folk and country. Our shaped rugs come in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm), and for a guitar's long, narrow shape, a custom runner can carry it further. Please measure your space first.
A short history of the guitar
Stringed instruments plucked with fingers or picks go back thousands of years, but the modern classical guitar took shape in Spain in the 19th century, when the luthier Antonio de Torres settled on the larger body and bracing that most classical guitars still use. Steel-string acoustics followed in America, and in the early 1950s solid-body electric guitars arrived and changed popular music forever. Inventors and builders like Leo Fender and the guitarist Les Paul, who also pioneered multitrack recording, helped make the electric guitar the sound of rock and roll.
Fretboard runners
A guitar's fretboard, with its metal frets, inlay dots at the third, fifth, seventh, ninth and twelfth frets and six strings running its length, makes a striking design for a long, narrow space. A custom runner up to 10 ft long, with the headstock at one end and the body at the other, turns a hallway into a giant guitar neck. Choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put as people walk by.
Practice corners and home studios
A rug under your amp, stool and pedalboard does more than look good. On hard floors, pedalboards and amps tend to slide when you stomp a switch, and a non-slip rug helps keep everything in place. It also softens footsteps and some of the echo bouncing off a bare floor. A 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft rug suits a single-player practice corner; choose Standard for its grip. Our office and studio rugs page has more setup ideas.
Guitar picks
Every guitarist has lost a pick, or a hundred. A rug scattered with colorful picks, or a single rug cut to the rounded-triangle shape of a giant pick, is a playful design for a kid's room or a practice corner. For a personal touch, a custom pick rug can carry a name or a band name of your own.
Sunburst
The sunburst finish, warm amber in the center fading to deep brown or black at the edges, has been a classic on guitars since the early 20th century. A sunburst rug, with soft wood grain showing through, brings that vintage warmth to a music room or a living room with leather and wood. It pairs well with a guitar hung on the wall.
Chord charts for beginners
For kids and adults learning to play, a rug printed with a grid of beginner chord diagrams, G, C, D, E minor and a few more, makes a fun, useful practice rug. Guitar teachers use them as a talking point in lesson studios. On a hard floor, choose Standard so the rug stays put.
Guitar heroes
From Chuck Berry's duckwalk to Jimi Hendrix playing a right-handed guitar flipped upside down, guitar heroes have inspired generations to pick up the instrument. Hendrix's performance of The Star-Spangled Banner at Woodstock in 1969 remains one of the most famous moments in rock history. A gig-poster rug of our own design, with bold type and psychedelic colors, celebrates that spirit without borrowing anyone's image. For more 1960s color, see our psychedelic rugs.
Teen bedrooms
For a teenager learning guitar, a guitar-shaped rug or a gig-poster design is the heart of the room. Pair it with a guitar stand, a small amp, a few posters and string lights. Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Man caves and game rooms
In a man cave or a basement rec room, a guitar rug in front of a wall of hanging guitars, or a gig-poster rug under the bar stools, makes the space feel like a backstage lounge. Our man cave rugs page has more ideas.
Country and folk
For country and folk fans, an acoustic guitar shape in honey and spruce, or a guitar against a desert sunset, pairs well with warm wood, leather and a cowhide-look rug. For more, see our western rugs.
Kids and young players
For younger children, a cartoon guitar in bright colors, or a rug of musical notes and picks, makes practice and play feel connected. On a hard floor, choose Standard so the rug stays put. For a softer bedroom rug, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m².
Bass and ukulele
Not every player plays six strings. A bass guitar, with its longer neck and four thick strings, makes a bold shaped rug for the person holding the band together. The ukulele, which grew out of small Portuguese guitars brought to Hawaii by immigrants from Madeira in the late 1800s, makes a sweet, cheerful design for a kid's room or a beach house.
Living rooms and guitar walls
Many players hang their guitars on the wall like art. A sunburst or fretboard rug beneath a row of wall-hung guitars ties the display together and turns a corner of the living room into a music space. Keep the rest of the room simple, with warm wood and leather, so the instruments stand out. Our living room rugs page has more layouts.
Round rugs
A round rug with a guitar headstock and tuning pegs circling the edge, a giant sound hole rosette or a burst of picks is a fun alternative to a shaped rug. Our round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across.
Hallways and entryways
Just inside the front door, a small guitar-pick or sunburst rug tells guests there's a musician in the house; keep it indoors, out of the weather, and choose Standard for its grip on tile and wood.
Colors
Guitar designs look great in classic finishes: sunburst amber and black, cherry red, vintage white, natural spruce and honey, and jet black. For a kids' room, try bright red, blue and yellow; for a living room, warm wood tones.
Other instruments
For keyboards, see our piano rugs; for records, our vinyl record rugs; and for every kind of music, our music rugs.
Gifts
A guitar rug makes a great gift for a new player, a band member, a guitar teacher or a lifelong rock fan. A guitar-shaped rug is the most fun; a custom pick rug with their name or band name is the most personal.

Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the colors stay loud, wash after wash.
Acoustic body shapes
Acoustic guitars come in a handful of classic body shapes, and players often have strong opinions about them. The dreadnought, big and square-shouldered, was named after a famous class of British battleships and became the standard for strumming and bluegrass, with a booming, bass-heavy sound. Concert and auditorium guitars have a narrower waist and a more balanced tone, comfortable for fingerpicking. Parlor guitars are small and intimate, popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for playing at home, and jumbo guitars are the largest of all, with wide, round lower bodies.
Classical guitars, with nylon strings and a wide, flat neck, have their own elegant shape, and the ukulele is a tiny cousin with four strings that arrived in Hawaii with Portuguese immigrants in the late 1800s.
Those shapes make lovely, understated rugs. A dreadnought silhouette in warm spruce and mahogany tones suits a country or folk music room, a small parlor guitar fits a cozy reading nook, and a classical guitar on deep burgundy brings a touch of Spanish elegance to a living room. A row of different body shapes, side by side like a guitar store wall, is a fun design for a player who owns more than one.
For a teacher or a beginner, a rug that labels the parts of a guitar, headstock, tuners, neck, frets, soundhole and bridge, doubles as a learning tool on the floor of a practice room.
For a family where several people play, a rug that shows a different instrument shape for each member, an acoustic, a classical guitar, a ukulele and maybe a bass, turns a living room corner into a family band's practice space.
