About Bow Rugs
Tied with a bow
A bow rug is one of the sweetest ways to finish any room. The signature design is a rug cut to the shape of a big, soft bow, two looped wings and trailing ribbon tails, in pale or bubblegum pink, lying beside the bed or in front of a mirror. Others love a scatter of small bows across a cream rug, a gingham ribbon or a sleek black bow. Ours are printed edge to edge on soft velvet, so every fold and ribbon edge looks crisp, and every rug goes in the washing machine.
Bow-shaped rugs
A rug cut to the outline of a bow is the signature piece of the coquette look. Our shaped rugs come in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). A small bow beside a bed or under a vanity stool is sweet and subtle; a large bow in the middle of a bedroom becomes the room's centerpiece. Pale pink is the timeless classic; blush, cream, red and black are popular too.
Bow designs
| Design | The look | Best in |
|---|---|---|
| Pink bow-shaped rug | One big soft bow, cut to shape | Bedrooms, vanity corners, dorms |
| Scattered bows | Little bows across a cream or pink ground | Bedrooms, nurseries |
| Gingham and polka-dot bows | Picnic-style checks and dots, sweet and vintage | Bedrooms, kitchens, cottage rooms |
| Black bows | Moody, gothic-coquette | Teen bedrooms, dressing rooms |
| Red holiday bows | Rich red bows, like a wrapped present | Entryways and living rooms in December |
The bow-shaped rug is cut to its own outline, from about 2.6×2.6 ft (80×80 cm), so it fits beside a vanity or a bed without covering the whole floor.
The coquette look
Coquette style, a soft, romantic, very feminine look built on bows, lace, ribbons, pearls and pale pinks, became one of the most popular aesthetics of recent years. Bows are its signature: on hair, on clothes, on bags and on furniture. A bow rug brings the look into a bedroom in a single step. Pair it with white or pale pink bedding, a frilly pillow, a vanity mirror, fairy lights and a vase of peonies or roses.
Bows through history
Bows are nothing new at all. In the eighteenth century, the fashionable courts of France covered dresses, shoes and hair in ribbon bows, and the playful Rococo style decorated walls and furniture with them too. Victorian girls wore large hair bows; mid-century fashion added bows to collars and waists. Today's love of bows borrows from all of it, which is part of why a bow rug feels both nostalgic and fresh.
Pink bows
Pink bows are by far the most searched, from the palest blush to bright bubblegum. Pale pink feels soft and grown-up; bright pink feels playful and fun. Both pair beautifully with white furniture and gold or brass accents. For more pink, pastel and kawaii designs, see our cute rugs.
Black bows
A black bow on cream, or a scatter of small black bows on pale pink, gives the coquette look a moodier, more grown-up edge, sometimes called gothic coquette. It suits a teen's bedroom, a dressing room or a vanity corner with black-framed mirrors and soft lighting. For darker designs, see our gothic rugs.
Gingham, dots and cottage bows
A bow in gingham or polka dots feels sweet and vintage, like a picnic or a cottage kitchen. It pairs well with florals, strawberries and white-painted furniture. For more in that spirit, see our strawberry rugs, flower rugs and checkered rugs.
Ballet pink and satin
Bows and ballet go hand in hand: satin pointe shoes with their ribbons, pale pink tights and tulle. The so-called balletcore look borrows all of it, and a soft pink bow rug with a satin-like sheen in the print fits right in. Pair it with a ballet barre-style mirror, pale pink walls and a few framed ballet prints for a dancer's bedroom.
Pearls, lace and the full look
To complete a coquette room, layer the bow rug with lace-trimmed pillows, a pearl-beaded lamp or frame, a few vintage perfume bottles on the dresser and fresh or faux flowers. Keep the palette to two or three soft colors, pink, cream and white, with a touch of gold, and the room will feel finished rather than busy.
Kitchens and breakfast nooks
A gingham bow rug in front of the kitchen sink, or under a little breakfast table, gives a cottage kitchen a sweet, vintage touch. Choose Standard for its grip on kitchen floors, and wash it whenever crumbs and coffee get the better of it.
Gifts
A bow rug is a lovely gift for a teenager redecorating her room, a college student moving into a dorm, a new mom preparing a nursery or a bride-to-be setting up a first home. A pink bow-shaped rug is the safest choice; a custom bow with her name in script is the most personal.
Vanity corners and dressing rooms
A bow rug in front of a vanity or a full-length mirror is a lovely way to use the design: it makes getting ready feel like a treat and adds a pretty touch to outfit photos. A 3.3 ft (100 cm) round rug or a medium bow-shaped rug fits neatly under a vanity stool. Choose Standard there: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², so the rug stays put when you pull the stool in and out.
Bedrooms and dorms
Beside the bed, a bow-shaped rug is the first soft thing your feet touch in the morning. In a dorm room, it's a quick way to make a shared, plain space feel personal. For a bedside rug, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², the softest we make; on a hard dorm floor, Standard grips better. Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Nurseries
Soft pink or cream bows make a sweet, gentle nursery theme. Pair a bow rug with white furniture, a pale pink or sage wall and a few framed prints. Choose Premium for tummy time and first crawls, and switch to Standard's non-slip back once your child is walking on a smooth floor. Our kids and nursery rugs have more ideas.
Bathrooms
A bow bath mat is a pretty touch in a bathroom, especially with white or pale pink tiles. One honest note: our rugs are printed velvet, not thick, quick-drying bath mats, so place one by the vanity or the door, rather than right where you step out of the shower, and choose Standard for its grip on tiles.
A famous bow
One of the most famous bows in the world sits on the ear of a certain white cat. If you love that red bow, see our Hello Kitty rugs, where it appears on its own as well as on her head.
Holiday bows
A big red bow is the symbol of a wrapped gift, and a red bow rug makes a festive December rug for an entryway or under the tree. For more seasonal designs, see our Christmas rugs.
Entryways
Just inside the front door, a small bow rug greets guests with a wink, especially in an apartment with a feminine, romantic style. Keep it indoors, out of the weather, and choose Standard for its grip.
Round bow rugs
A round rug with a single bow in the center, or a ring of small bows around the edge, is a soft, pretty shape for a reading corner or under a desk chair. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across. Our round rugs page shows each size in a room.
Your own bow
Want a bow in your exact shade of pink, with your name in script below it, or a ribbon print matched to your bedding? Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, or cut it to shape. Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned, so please check names and spelling before ordering.
Standard or Premium
Standard is best under vanity stools and desk chairs, in bathrooms, dorms and anywhere with a hard or slippery floor, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best beside a bed or in a nursery. Both are printed the same way, so pinks stay soft and blacks stay deep, and both go in the washing machine.
Sizes, shipping and returns
Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and bow-shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.
Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills, makeup included, with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so your bow stays pretty and the pinks stay soft, wash after wash.
Ribbons in French decoration
Bows have decorated rooms for centuries. In late 18th-century France, the style later named after Louis XVI was full of ribbons: bowknots tied around flower garlands, ribbon swags draped over medallions and delicate bows carved into chair backs, mirror frames and wall panels. The look was light and romantic, a reaction against the heavier curves of the decades before, and it spread to fabrics, porcelain and wallpaper across Europe.
A rug inspired by that tradition can be more grown-up than a single pink bow. Picture a medallion framed by a ribbon tied in a bow at the top, with garlands of small roses trailing from it, in cream, powder blue and soft gold, or in blush and ivory. It suits a dressing room, a feminine living room or a bedroom with an antique mirror and a velvet chair.
The same ribbon motif works in a simpler, modern way too: a thin ribbon border tied in a bow at one corner of a plain rug, so the room gets the charm without looking like a dollhouse.
Bows have also carried meanings over the centuries. A bow tied on a gift promises a surprise, a ribbon tied around a tree once welcomed travelers home, and in many cultures a bow in a girl's hair marked a special occasion. A bow rug in a bedroom or a dressing room carries that sense of celebration into everyday life. Pair it with soft lighting, a vintage mirror and a few framed prints, and the room feels romantic without being fussy, a place to get ready slowly on a quiet morning.
FAQ
Questions about Bow Rugs
Do you make bow-shaped rugs?
Yes. A big bow with two looped wings and trailing ribbon tails, cut to its own shape in pink, black or red, from 2.6×2.6 ft (80×80 cm) by a vanity to 5.2×5.9 ft (160×180 cm) beside the bed.
Do you make pink bow rugs?
Yes. Pink is the classic bow color, from pale blush to bright bubblegum, as bow shapes, round rugs or scattered patterns.
Are bow rugs machine washable?
Yes. A pink bow or gingham design goes in on a gentle cold cycle; dry it flat so the bow keeps its shape and the pinks stay soft.
What is a coquette rug?
A rug in the soft, romantic coquette style, usually with bows, ribbons and pale pinks, the signature of the look.
Which bow rug suits a vanity corner?
A 3.3 ft (100 cm) round rug or a medium bow-shaped rug under the stool, in Standard so it stays put when the stool moves.
Do you make black bow rugs?
Yes. A black bow on cream or small black bows on pale pink, a moodier take on the coquette look.
Can I use a bow rug in the bathroom?
Yes, by the vanity or the door. Choose Standard for its non-slip back; it's printed velvet, so keep it out of the shower splash zone.
Can I add my name to a bow rug?
Yes. Your name can go in a soft script beneath a pink bow or tied into the ribbon tails, on any custom size up to 5′11″ × 10′. A personalized rug can't be returned.
