About Fendi Rugs
Made in Rome
Fendi began in 1925, when Adele and Edoardo Fendi opened a leather and fur shop in Rome. Their five daughters later took over and turned it into a fashion house, and Rome has stayed at the heart of its identity: its travertine stone, its arches, its fountains and its warm, sunbaked colors. A Fendi-inspired rug borrows that Roman language for the floor: a grid of arches, the creamy texture of travertine, tobacco-and-brown stripes or a soft, printed fur look. Ours are printed into short velvet and go in the washing machine. To be clear from the start: these are independent designs inspired by the style, not Fendi products, and they don't use the brand's logos or monogram.
Fendi-inspired designs
| Design | The look | Best in |
|---|---|---|
| Roman arches | Rows of arches in cream on warm stone | Entryways, living rooms |
| Travertine | Creamy stone with soft pits and veining | Closets, modern rooms |
| Tobacco stripes | Vertical stripes in tobacco and brown | Dressing rooms, hallways |
| Printed fur look | Soft, painterly fur texture, printed | Bedrooms, vanities |
| Roman fountain | A baroque fountain in fine illustrated lines | Living rooms, studies |
| Italian sunshine | Saffron yellow, terracotta and cream | Kitchens, sunrooms |
Roman arches and travertine work as quiet, architectural designs in an entryway, while tobacco stripes are the bolder choice for a dressing room.
The longest partnership in fashion
In 1965, the Fendi sisters hired a young German designer named Karl Lagerfeld, and he stayed with the house until his death in 2019, a collaboration of more than fifty years, often called the longest between a designer and a fashion house. Together they reinvented fur as fashion, with playful techniques and bright colors. In 1997, Silvia Venturini Fendi, a granddaughter of the founders, designed a small bag meant to be tucked under the arm like a loaf of French bread, and it became one of the first must-have "it bags" of the era.
The square colosseum
Since 2015, the house has been based in the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana in Rome's EUR district, a white travertine building from the 1930s and early 1940s whose façades are covered in rows of identical arches, earning it the nickname the square Colosseum. A Roman-arches rug, rows of cream arches with soft shadows on warm stone, captures that striking architecture and makes a beautiful entryway or living room rug with real presence.
The Roman arch
The arch was one of ancient Rome's great gifts to building. Roman engineers used it to carry aqueducts across valleys, bridges across rivers and the tiers of the Colosseum, opened in AD 80, high above the arena floor. Repeated in rows, arches create a rhythm of light and shadow that still feels calm and grand two thousand years later, which is exactly why they make such a satisfying pattern underfoot.
Italian modern design
Italy also gave the world some of the boldest modern design of the 20th century, from the elegant furniture of Gio Ponti to the colorful, playful objects of the Memphis Group, founded in Milan in 1981. A rug in that spirit, curving shapes, terrazzo speckles and bold color blocks, pairs well with a Roman palette for a room that mixes ancient and modern.
Travertine
Travertine, the pale, pitted limestone used for the Colosseum, St. Peter's Square and countless Roman buildings, has become a favorite of modern interiors, on tables, floors and walls. A travertine-look rug, creamy stone with soft pits and veining, brings that warm, natural material to the floor of a closet or a minimalist living room. For more stone looks, see our marble rugs.
Tobacco stripes
Vertical stripes in tobacco brown and deep chocolate are a classic of Italian luxury. A striped rug in those warm browns, or in tobacco and cream, is a sophisticated, understated design for a dressing room, a hallway runner or a study. On a custom runner up to 10 ft long, stripes make a narrow space feel longer. Choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put as people walk by.
Printed fur looks
The house built its name on fur, and a fur-look rug captures that soft, luxurious texture as a print, rendered so it looks plush and painterly. It's printed velvet, not real fur or a shaggy pile, so it's flat, washable and involves no animals. In cream, caramel or blush, it suits a bedroom or a vanity corner beautifully.
Roman fountains
Rome is a city of fountains, and the house helped fund the restoration of the Trevi Fountain, completed in 2015. A fountain rug, a baroque fountain drawn in fine lines on cream, or a pattern of water and shells, is an elegant design for a living room or a study.
Italian sunshine
Rome's palette is warm: saffron yellow walls, terracotta roofs, cream stone and the deep green of umbrella pines. A rug in those sunny colors suits a kitchen, a sunroom or any room that needs Mediterranean warmth. Our kitchen rugs page has more ideas.
Roman holidays
For anyone who has thrown a coin into a Roman fountain, wandered the Spanish Steps or eaten gelato in a sunny piazza, a Rome-inspired rug is a lovely souvenir. A custom design can combine arches, a fountain and the name of the neighborhood where you stayed, a daily reminder of the trip.
Walk-in closets
A travertine or tobacco-stripe rug under a closet island makes a walk-in closet feel like an Italian boutique. A 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft rug suits most closets. Choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², for the softest feel underfoot.
Entryways
Just inside the front door, a Roman-arches rug is a grand, architectural welcome. Keep it indoors, out of the weather, and choose Standard for its grip on tile and wood.
Living rooms
In a modern living room, a travertine-look rug pairs beautifully with a curved cream sofa, a stone or travertine coffee table, walnut and brass. A 5×7 ft rug anchors the seating area. Our living room rugs page has more layouts.
Bedrooms and vanities
A soft fur-look rug beside the bed or in front of a vanity adds a cozy, glamorous touch. Pair it with linen bedding, a velvet headboard and warm lighting. Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Studies and offices
In a study or a home office, a tobacco-stripe or fountain rug pairs with dark wood, leather and books. Under a rolling chair, choose Standard, which stays put and lets the wheels roll. Our office and studio rugs page has more setups.
Dining rooms
Under a round dining table, a travertine-look or arch-pattern round rug echoes a stone tabletop and keeps chairs from scraping the floor. Our round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across. It goes in the washing machine after dinner parties.
Pairing with furniture
These designs look best with curved, sculptural furniture: a boucle sofa, a travertine or marble side table, walnut, brass and a few ceramic vases. Keep the palette warm and tight, cream, tobacco and one accent of saffron or black.
Colors
Fendi-inspired designs look best in warm Roman tones: travertine cream, tobacco, chocolate, caramel and saffron, with black and gold for drama and soft blush for fur looks. Cream and tobacco is the most versatile and the easiest to live with.

Gifts
A Fendi-inspired rug makes an elegant gift for a fashion lover, a Rome enthusiast or a friend furnishing a new apartment. A travertine-look rug is the safest and most versatile choice, and a Roman-arches rug is the most striking.

A note on the brand
Selleria and saddle stitching
Fendi's Selleria line draws on an old Roman craft: saddle-making. Its leather pieces are stitched by hand with thick thread in a visible saddle stitch, the same method saddlers used for centuries because a single broken stitch won't unravel the seam. The result has a bold, graphic edge, rows of neat, raised stitches running along every border.
That detail translates into rugs that feel crafted rather than decorated. A plain tobacco, cognac or cream rug with a wide border of printed saddle stitching looks like fine leather goods laid on the floor, elegant in a study or an entryway. A grid of stitched panels, like a quilted leather surface, adds texture to a walk-in closet or a dressing room.
Roman craft traditions also include marble inlay, bronze casting and travertine stonework, and all of them share a love of honest materials and visible workmanship. A rug that borrows that spirit, a single color, a fine stitched line, a hint of warm leather tones, sits beautifully with walnut furniture, brass lamps and creamy stone.
For someone who loves Italian craftsmanship, these designs make a refined gift, especially paired with a leather-bound notebook or a small brass desk object, a quiet nod to the workshops of Rome.
Leather goods lovers often choose these designs for a dressing room where bags and shoes are displayed on open shelves. The rug's warm tones, cognac, tobacco and cream, echo the leather above it, while the stitched border adds a crafted detail that ties the whole room together. In a home office, the same design brings a sense of quiet luxury to a workspace, especially with a walnut desk and a brass lamp.
