About Hermes Rugs

From the stable to the salon

Hermès began in 1837, when Thierry Hermès opened a workshop in Paris making fine harnesses and bridles for the carriages of European nobility. The horse has been at the heart of the house ever since, even as it moved from saddles to leather goods, silk scarves and some of the most coveted handbags in the world. A Hermès-inspired rug borrows that equestrian, artisanal language for the floor: a square laid out like a giant silk scarf with ornate borders and a central medallion, a scatter of saddles and stirrups, the warm tan of saddle leather with stitched edges or the glow of orange and chocolate brown. Ours are printed into short velvet and go in the washing machine. To be clear from the start: these are independent designs inspired by the style, not Hermès products, and they don't use the brand's logos, letter H, carriage emblem or packaging.

The silk-scarf layout looks like an oversized scarf laid on the floor and suits an entryway, while saddle leather tones fit a home office.

A short history

In 1880, the house moved to 24 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris, where its flagship still stands. As automobiles replaced carriages in the early 20th century, the family turned its saddle-making skills to luggage, bags and accessories, keeping the hand-stitched craftsmanship that defined its harnesses. Two of its bags became legends: one renamed in honor of Grace Kelly after she was photographed with it in the 1950s, and another created in 1984 for the actress Jane Birkin, after a chance conversation on a flight. Its famous orange packaging dates from the Second World War, when, the story goes, orange paperboard was the only kind available.

The silk scarf

In 1937, the house introduced its first silk scarf, a 90 cm (35-inch) square printed with an illustrated scene, and the carré became one of the most collected accessories in fashion, with hundreds of designs of horses, gardens, maps and ornament. A scarf-inspired rug takes that layout, bold borders, decorated corners and a detailed central medallion, and scales it up for the floor. It works beautifully as a square: our custom rugs can print a square up to 5′11″ × 5′11″, like a giant silk scarf laid down in an entryway or a living room. Our original scarf-style designs are inspired by the format, not copies of any scarf.

Equestrian motifs

Saddles, stirrups, bits, bridles, riding crops and rosettes: the tack room is a rich source of pattern. An equestrian rug with these motifs drawn in fine, illustrated lines, on cream, navy or deep green, suits a study, a library or a bedroom with a classic, country-house feel. For horse lovers, see also our western rugs.

Saddle leather

The house is famous for its saddle stitch, a strong, hand-sewn stitch made with two needles. A leather-look rug in tan or cognac, with a printed border of stitching, captures that craft in a way that suits a home office, a dressing room or a study with dark wood. It's printed velvet, soft underfoot, with the look of leather rather than the real thing.

Orange and chocolate

Warm orange paired with chocolate brown is one of the most recognizable color combinations in luxury. A rug in bold orange with a brown border brings that warmth to a walk-in closet or a modern living room with cream upholstery and walnut furniture, a confident, cheerful splash of color in any season.

Horses

A rug of galloping horses in fine, illustrated lines, in cream and tan or navy and gold, is an elegant design for anyone who rides or simply loves horses. It suits a bedroom, a study or the entryway of a country home. Keep an entry rug indoors, out of the weather.

Chain links

Bold, interlocking chain links, inspired by the anchor chains and horse tack that turn up in so much luxury jewelry, make a graphic, modern pattern. A chain-link rug in gold on navy or cream on tan suits an entryway or a dressing room, and it reads as polished rather than flashy.

Craftsmanship

The house is known for having many of its leather pieces made from start to finish by a single artisan, stitching by hand for many hours, a tradition that goes back to its harness workshop. Our rugs are a very different craft, printed rather than hand-stitched, but the same respect for detail guides the designs: borders that line up, corners that balance, fine lines that stay crisp.

Riders and country homes

For riders, an equestrian rug in the mudroom, tack room or a bedroom is a natural fit. In a country home, pair it with a tartan throw, riding boots by the door and a framed print of a favorite horse. A washable rug is especially practical where boots and dogs come and go.

Pairing with furniture

These designs look best with warm wood, leather armchairs, brass lamps, cream linen and a few well-chosen books. Keep the palette tight, tan, cream and one accent of orange or navy, so the room feels calm and quietly luxurious.

Walk-in closets and dressing rooms

A walk-in closet is where a Hermès-inspired rug feels most at home. A scarf-style square under a closet island, or an orange and brown rug in a dressing room, makes the space feel like a boutique. A 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft rug suits most closets. Choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², for the softest feel underfoot.

Studies and home offices

In a study or a home office, a saddle-leather or equestrian rug pairs beautifully with a wood desk, a leather chair and a wall of books. Under a rolling chair, choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put and lets the wheels roll. Our office and studio rugs page has more setups.

Living rooms

In a living room, a scarf-style rug with an ornate border makes an elegant centerpiece under a coffee table, especially in a room with cream and tan upholstery, brass lamps and a few equestrian prints. Our living room rugs page has more layouts.

Bedrooms

In a bedroom, an equestrian or horse design at the foot of the bed brings a calm, classic, country-house mood. Pair it with crisp white bedding, a tan throw and dark wood. Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.

Entryways

Just inside the front door, a square scarf-style rug or a chain-link pattern is an elegant first impression. Keep it indoors, out of the weather, and choose Standard for its grip on tile and wood.

Colors

Hermès-inspired designs look best in warm, luxurious tones: orange, chocolate, tan, cognac, cream and gold, with navy, forest green and burgundy for equestrian designs. Tan and cream is the most versatile; orange and brown is the boldest and most joyful.

Gifts

A Hermès-inspired rug makes an elegant gift for a rider, a fashion lover or a friend moving into a new home. A scarf-style square with their initials in the medallion is the most personal and lasting choice.

Your own design

Want your initials at the center of a scarf-style medallion, a square sized to your entryway or an equestrian design featuring your own horse? Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, or as a round rug. Please only send artwork you're allowed to use, which rules out brand logos and scarf designs you don't own. Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned.

Sizes, shipping and returns

Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft, round rugs from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and custom sizes, squares included, up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.

Care

Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the orange stays warm and the borders stay crisp, wash after wash.

A note on the brand

The shop windows of Faubourg Saint-Honoré

Hermès has occupied 24 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris since 1880, and its shop windows became famous in their own right. For decades, the Tunisian-born designer Leïla Menchari dreamed up windows full of fantasy: deserts, gardens, imaginary journeys, tiny worlds built around a scarf or a saddle. Parisians and visitors would stop on the pavement to see what she had created each season.

That tradition inspires rugs that tell small stories. A window scene of a horse among palm trees, framed by an arch, suits a dressing room or an entryway. A miniature desert landscape in orange and sand tones brings warmth and wonder to a living room, and a pattern of tiny vignettes, a carriage, a garden, a lantern, recalls the playful detail of a window display.

These designs pair with warm wood, leather, brass and a touch of orange, the house's signature color, and they suit anyone who loves the craft of display as much as the objects themselves.

These designs also suit a boutique or a showroom entrance.

Window displays inspire thoughtful, personal gifts for anyone.
