About Off-White Rugs
Streetwear by an architect
Off-White was founded in Milan in 2013 by Virgil Abloh, an American designer who had studied civil engineering and earned a master's degree in architecture before turning to fashion. He brought an architect's eye to streetwear: diagonal stripes like hazard markings, industrial straps, zip ties left on as decoration and words placed in quotation marks, as if to ask what an object really is. In 2018 he became the artistic director of menswear at Louis Vuitton, one of the first Black designers to lead a major French luxury house. He died in November 2021, at 41, leaving a body of work that blurred the line between street, art, design and luxury.
An Off-White-inspired rug brings that clean, ironic language onto the floor of a sneaker room, a studio or a bedroom. Ours are printed into short velvet, so bold stripes and crisp type come out sharp, and they go in the washing machine. To be clear from the start: these are independent designs inspired by the style, not Off-White products, and they don't use the brand's logos.
Before Off-White
Abloh's path into fashion ran through music and art. He worked closely with Kanye West as a creative director for years, and in 2012 he launched an earlier label, Pyrex Vision, whose screen-printed graphics quickly drew attention across the fashion world. Off-White followed a year later, and within a few seasons it was showing in Paris. That mix of music, art and fashion is part of why the look still feels so current.
Diagonal stripes
The signature of the look is a field of bold black and white diagonal stripes, inspired by the hazard markings on construction sites and industrial floors. On a rug, it's instantly graphic: strong enough to anchor a room, simple enough to sit with almost any furniture, old or new. In black and white, it's the classic; in black and industrial yellow, it leans further into the construction-site feel; in grey and white, it's softer and more minimal. For more strong black and white patterns, see our checkered rugs and geometric rugs.
Words in quotation marks
Abloh liked to label things in quotation marks, printing a word like "SHOELACES" on a pair of shoelaces. The idea, borrowed from the art world, makes you look again at an ordinary object. A rug in that spirit, a single word in bold quotation marks, such as "RUG", "FLOOR" or "HOME", is a clever, minimal design that makes guests smile. Through our custom rugs, the word can be anything you like, your name, your crew or an inside joke.
Rugs that made the point
Abloh was fascinated by rugs as a design object. In 2019 he designed a collection for a Swedish furniture giant that included rugs printed to look like an enormous shopping receipt and one with the words "KEEP OFF" across it, a joke about the way people treat precious things. Those rugs showed how a simple graphic on the floor can be art, humor and design all at once, and they remain some of the most talked-about rugs of the last decade.
Industrial yellow and the strap
A long yellow industrial belt with black lettering became one of the most recognizable accessories of the era, worn by everyone from fashion editors to teenagers. A design inspired by it, a bright yellow strap running across a black or grey rug, is a bold, graphic piece for a sneaker room or a modern setup. Yellow and black also carry the hazard-marking theme through to the rest of the room: think black shelving, white walls and a single yellow accent.
Arrows and zip ties
Crossed arrows and the red zip tie left attached to products were other small signatures of the look. An arrow-inspired design, bold crossing arrows in white on black, or a single oversized zip-tie graphic in red, is a subtle nod that fans will spot and others will simply read as a strong, clean graphic.
The sneaker room
The Off-White look began with sneakers for many people, especially after the hugely popular collection Abloh designed with a major sportswear brand in 2017, which deconstructed classic shoes and printed labels on them. A sneaker room is a natural home for a striped or quotation-mark rug: plain walls, well-lit shelves and a bold graphic floor. A 4×6 or 5×7 ft rug in the center of the room ties the whole display together. For more, see our sneaker rugs and hypebeast and streetwear rugs.
Studios and modern rooms
Because the look is so rooted in architecture and art, an Off-White-inspired rug works beyond the sneaker room: in a design studio, a minimal apartment or a home office. Diagonal stripes in black and white suit concrete, steel and glass; a quotation-mark rug suits a creative's workspace. Under a desk chair, choose Standard: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put and lets wheels roll freely.
Teen bedrooms
For a teenager who follows streetwear, a striped or yellow-strap rug is one of the easiest ways to give a bedroom that look: white or grey walls, black furniture, framed posters, sneakers on display and a rug that stands out. For a bedroom, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², softer and warmer underfoot, in 4×6 ft at the foot of the bed or 2.6×3.9 ft beside it. Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.

His legacy
Beyond his own designs, Abloh was known for opening doors. In 2020 he launched a scholarship fund to support Black students in fashion, and he spent a great deal of time mentoring young designers and sharing how he worked. Many fans who buy his style today are designers and creatives themselves, and an Off-White-inspired rug in a studio is, for them, a small tribute.
Hallways and entryways
Diagonal stripes along a hallway feel like a runway, and a quotation-mark rug inside the front door, perhaps reading "WELCOME", greets guests with a wink. Our standard sizes are rectangular, but a custom size lets you order a long, narrow rug up to 10 ft long. Choose Standard for its grip on hard floors.
Streetwear and luxury
Abloh's career was a bridge between skate-shop streetwear and the biggest luxury houses in the world. If you love that crossover, see our Louis Vuitton-inspired rugs, and for other streetwear favorites our Supreme-inspired, BAPE-inspired and Stüssy-inspired pages.
Round and custom
A round rug with diagonal stripes, from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, is a striking choice under a desk chair or in an entryway. Through our custom rugs, you can choose your own word in quotation marks, your own stripe colors or your own artwork, in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′. Please only send artwork you're allowed to use, which rules out brand logos you don't own. Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned.
Standard or Premium
Standard is best under desk chairs, in hallways, entryways and on hard floors, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best in bedrooms and lounges. Both are printed the same way, so stripes stay razor-sharp and type stays crisp, and both go in the washing machine.
Sizes, shipping and returns
Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across. Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.
Gifts
An Off-White-inspired rug is a great gift for a sneakerhead, a design student or a friend who still talks about the 2017 sneaker drops. A custom quotation-mark rug with their name or a private joke is the most personal choice, and diagonal stripes are the safest if you aren't sure of their taste.
Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the whites stay bright and the stripes stay crisp, wash after wash, long after the next drop has come and gone.
A note on the brand
The three percent idea
Virgil Abloh often described a simple rule for his work: take something familiar and change it by about three percent. A small edit, a word in quotation marks, a zip tie left on a shoe, a stripe placed where you don't expect it, could be enough to make an everyday object feel new without hiding what it was. He applied the idea to sneakers, furniture, packaging and even architecture.
His 2019 exhibition, Figures of Speech, at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, showed the breadth of that approach, from fashion and music to design and art. He died in November 2021, but the three percent idea is still a useful way to think about decorating a room.
A rug that follows it doesn't need a logo. Start with something ordinary, a plain gray rug, a simple stripe or a basic grid, and add one small, deliberate twist: a single word in quotation marks in one corner, a bright yellow strip across one edge, or an arrow pointing off the side. The result feels designed, a little ironic and very personal, especially when the word is your own.
