About Stussy Rugs
From a surfboard to streetwear
In the early 1980s, Shawn Stussy was shaping surfboards in Laguna Beach, California, and signing each one with a loose, hand-drawn scrawl of his name. He started printing that signature on T-shirts and hats to sell alongside his boards, and they quickly became more popular than the boards themselves. With a business partner, he built the brand into one of the very first streetwear labels, mixing surf, skate, punk, reggae and hip-hop. A loose network of friends, DJs, skaters and artists in cities like New York, London and Tokyo, known as the International Stüssy Tribe, spread it around the world. Many of the ideas that define streetwear today, limited runs, graphic tees and a sense of belonging to a crew, can be traced back to it.
A Stüssy-inspired rug brings that sunny, rebellious California look onto the floor of a surf shack, a sneaker room or a bedroom. Ours are printed into short velvet, so hand-drawn lines and bold graphics come out crisp, and they go in the washing machine. To be clear from the start: these are independent designs inspired by the style, not Stüssy products, and they don't use the brand's signature logo or trademarks.
Hand-drawn lettering
The heart of the look is lettering that feels drawn with a marker rather than typeset: loose, confident and a little rough around the edges, like graffiti on a surfboard. A rug with your own name or a word in that kind of hand-drawn scrawl, through our custom rugs, is a personal, laid-back design for a bedroom or a studio. Please only send artwork you're allowed to use, which rules out brand logos and signatures you don't own; your own name in a hand-drawn style is all yours.
8-balls, dice and crowns
Streetwear in the 1980s and 90s loved a handful of bold symbols: the black 8-ball from a pool table, rolling dice, crowns and stars. They carry a sense of luck, risk and swagger. A round 8-ball rug, black with a white circle and a big 8, is a perfect fit for a circle, and a scatter of dice or crowns on a bold ground makes a fun, graphic rectangle. Our round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across.
Checkerboards and stripes
The black and white checkerboard of skate and ska culture runs through the same era. A checkerboard rug with a few hand-drawn graphics, or simple bold stripes, suits a skate-inspired room or a sneaker wall. For more checks, see our checkered rugs.
Surf culture
The brand never forgot where it came from: surfboards, waves, palm trees and sunsets over the Pacific. A surf-inspired rug, a board with hand-drawn graphics, a wave in two colors or a sunset over the beach, brings that Laguna Beach feeling into a room, whether you live by the ocean or a thousand miles inland. Designs at a glance
| Design | The look | Best in |
|---|---|---|
| Hand-drawn lettering | Your name or a word in loose marker style | Bedrooms, studios, entryways |
| 8-ball | Black ball with a white 8, on a round rug | Game rooms, under a desk chair |
| Dice and crowns | Bold symbols scattered on color | Teen rooms, sneaker rooms |
| Surfboard and waves | Laid-back Southern California | Surf shacks, beach houses, bedrooms |
| Checkerboard | Black and white skate checks | Skate rooms, hallways |
The 8-ball is the easiest design to fit into a game room, and the checkerboard suits a skate room or a hallway.
The surf shack
A surf shack, whether it's a beach house or just a bedroom with boards on the wall, is the natural home for this style. Pair a surf or wave rug with whitewashed wood, a few boards on hooks, faded posters and a hammock chair. In a beach house, choose Standard: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put and goes in the washing machine after sandy days.
Sneaker rooms
For a streetwear collector, a bold 8-ball or dice rug in the center of a sneaker room, with plain walls and well-lit shelves, frames a collection without competing with it. A 4×6 or 5×7 ft rug suits the middle of the room. For more, see our sneaker rugs and hypebeast and streetwear rugs.
Teen bedrooms
For a teenager into surf, skate or streetwear, a rug in this style is an easy way to give a bedroom a cool, relaxed look: white walls, a skateboard on hooks, a few posters and a rug with hand-drawn graphics. For the softest feel underfoot, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², in 4×6 ft at the foot of the bed or 2.6×3.9 ft beside it. Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Studios and game rooms
In a creative studio, a design office or a game room with a pool table, an 8-ball or dice rug is a fun, fitting touch. Under a desk chair, choose Standard in 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft or a 3.3 to 4.6 ft (100 to 140 cm) round rug, which stays put and lets wheels roll freely.
Music and the tribe
The brand's crew was full of DJs and musicians, and its look has always been tied to music, from reggae and punk to hip-hop and house. A rug in this style suits a room with turntables, a record collection and a sound system. For more, see our music rugs and vinyl record rugs.
The 1990s
By the early 1990s, the brand was a global name, worn by skaters in California, club kids in London and DJs in New York and Tokyo. Shawn Stussy himself stepped away in 1996, but the label carried on, and the look of that decade, oversized tees, bucket hats, hand-drawn graphics and crew pride, is the one most people picture today. A rug inspired by that era suits a room full of 90s records, a skate deck on the wall and a pair of vintage sneakers.
Tokyo and the global crew
Japan embraced the brand early, and the Tokyo streetwear scene it helped inspire went on to create labels of its own, including BAPE in Harajuku. That back-and-forth between California and Tokyo shaped streetwear as we know it. If you love that connection, our BAPE-inspired rugs are a natural companion.
Skate rooms
For a skater, a checkerboard or hand-lettered rug in a room with decks on the wall, a ramp-sized beanbag and a few stickered boxes feels just right. Choose Standard on hard floors, so it stays put when someone comes in carrying a board.
Kids' rooms
A surfboard or wave rug is a cheerful choice for a child's room, too, especially in a family that loves the beach. Choose Standard on a hard floor, and remember that every rug goes in the washing machine.
Choosing colors
The look works in black and white, in sun-faded beach tones like sand, sky blue and coral, or in bolder reggae-inspired red, gold and green. Pick the palette that matches your room, and let the hand-drawn graphics do the rest.

Standard or Premium
Standard is best under desk chairs, in beach houses, hallways and on hard floors, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best in bedrooms and lounges. Both are printed the same way, so hand-drawn lines stay crisp, and both go in the washing machine.
Sizes, shipping and returns
Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across. Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.
Entryways
Just inside the front door, a 2×3 ft rug with a hand-drawn word, a surfboard or an 8-ball sets a relaxed tone for the whole home. Our rugs are for indoor use, so keep it inside rather than out in the weather, and choose Standard for its grip.
Gifts
A Stüssy-inspired rug is a great gift for a surfer, a skater, a streetwear collector or a friend who still wears their first graphic tee from the 90s. A custom rug with their name in hand-drawn lettering is the most personal choice; an 8-ball round rug is the safest.
Care
Shake out any sand before washing. Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the lines stay sharp and the colors stay sunny, wash after wash.
A note on the brand
A beach-town palette
Surf-born streetwear looks best with colors that feel sun-washed: faded black, sand, washed-out navy, sea-glass green and a little sun-bleached red. A rug with hand-drawn lettering in black on cream, or a checkerboard in sand and navy, sits easily in a room with white walls, light wood and a surfboard leaning in the corner.
To keep the look relaxed, avoid perfectly matching everything. Mix a vintage band tee in a frame, a skate deck on the wall and a woven basket of shoes by the door. The rug should look like it came home from the beach with you, slightly worn in, not like a catalog photo.
For a teen's bedroom or a dorm, the same palette works with a few bold accents, an 8-ball pillow, dice on the shelf, a crown sticker on a laptop, so the room has personality without being loud.
