About Money Rugs

A rug that simply says success

A money rug is bold, funny and more than a little bit flashy: an oversized hundred-dollar bill stretched across the floor, a fan of cash, a scatter of gold coins or a dollar sign cut to shape. It's a favorite in streetwear rooms, sneaker displays, home offices and the studios of people building their own businesses, a daily reminder of the goal, or just a great joke. Ours are printed edge to edge on soft velvet, so fine engraved lines and greens come out crisp, and every rug goes in the washing machine.

Not real money, and clearly so

An important note: our money designs are stylized and decorative, not copies of real currency. In the United States, the law allows color illustrations of currency only when they're one-sided and either much smaller or much larger than an actual bill, specifically less than three-quarters or more than one and a half times the real size. A rug is one-sided and many times larger than any bill, and our designs are our own artwork rather than reproductions, so nobody will ever mistake one for the real thing.

The oversized hundred is the boldest statement for an office or game room, while vintage banknote engraving gives the same idea a quieter, classic look.

The hundred-dollar look

The hundred is the most recognizable bill in the world, with its portrait of Benjamin Franklin, which is why people call them Benjamins. Its pale green and cream, fine lines and ornate frame make a striking pattern at rug size. Our oversized hundred-style designs capture that look, the colors, the frame and the engraved feel, as original artwork rather than a copy of the bill. A 4×6 or 5×7 ft rectangle is the classic size.

Gold coins and treasure

For something richer still, a rug scattered with gold coins on black feels like a treasure chest spilled across the floor. It suits a game room, a home bar or a lounge with brass and dark wood, and it's a fun design for kids who love pirates and treasure hunts. A round coin design, a single giant gold coin with an engraved edge, is especially striking on a round rug from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm). Our round rugs page shows each size in a room.

Dollar signs

A bold dollar sign cut to shape is the most graphic money rug of all. Our shaped rugs come in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). In money green, it's classic; in gold, it's flashy; in black on a white floor, it's minimal and modern.

Banknote engraving

Look closely at any banknote and you'll see guilloche: delicate, interlocking spiral and wave patterns, originally engraved by machine to make bills hard to copy. Those patterns are beautiful in their own right. A rug built from guilloche lines and ornate borders, without any bill at all, is an elegant, almost abstract design for a study or an office, and it reads as fine engraving to anyone who doesn't make the connection.

Streetwear and sneaker rooms

Money rugs are a staple of streetwear culture, alongside sneaker walls, designer boxes and framed jerseys. An oversized bill or a fan of cash in the middle of a sneaker room completes the look. For more, see our hypebeast and streetwear rugs and sneaker rugs.

Home offices and studios

For entrepreneurs, freelancers and anyone building a business, a money rug under the desk is a playful daily motivator. Under a desk chair, choose Standard: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², in 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft, which stays put and lets wheels roll freely. A vintage engraving design suits a more traditional office; an oversized bill suits a creative studio.

Game rooms and man caves

In a game room with a poker table or a man cave with a home bar, a money or gold-coin rug fits right in. Pair it with green felt, dark wood and a few framed prints. Our man cave rugs and gaming rugs pages have more ideas.

Teen rooms and dorms

Teenagers and college students love a money rug for its humor and attitude. A dollar-sign shaped rug beside the bed or under the desk chair, or a fanned cash design in the middle of a dorm room, makes a bold statement. For the softest bedside rug, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m². Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.

Photo backdrops

Some people look for a money mat as a backdrop for photos and videos, for content, announcements or celebrations. A large money rug makes a bold, eye-catching floor for flat-lay photos and short videos, and its soft velvet surface looks great on camera.

Money in art

Money has long fascinated artists. In the early 1960s, Andy Warhol made paintings and prints of rows of dollar bills, turning everyday cash into pop art. A rug that borrows that idea, repeating bills in a grid, slightly offset and in bold color, sits somewhere between a joke and a gallery piece. For more, see our Andy Warhol-inspired rugs and pop art rugs.

Bulls, bears and the markets

For anyone who works in finance, or simply follows the markets, the bull and the bear are the classic symbols of rising and falling prices. A bold charging bull, a stock-ticker stripe or a rising chart line makes a fun, fitting rug for a home office or a trading desk, a lighter take on a serious job.

Lucky symbols

Cultures around the world have their own symbols of wealth and luck: gold coins tied with red string, lucky horseshoes, four-leaf clovers and the beckoning cat with a raised paw. A rug built from those symbols makes a cheerful, good-luck welcome just inside the front door of a new home or a new business.

Milestones and gifts

A money rug is a fun gift for a first job, a promotion, a new business, a graduation in finance or economics, or a friend who loves to joke about getting rich. An oversized hundred-style design is the safest choice; a custom fake bill with their face is the funniest.

Colors

Money green and cream is the classic, with a touch of black for the fine lines. Gold on black feels luxurious; black and white feels minimal and graphic; pink or purple "money" is a playful, fashion-forward twist. Through our custom rugs, any design can be printed in your colors.

Entryways

Just inside the front door, a small coin or dollar-sign rug makes a playful first impression on guests, and a cheerful daily reminder as you head out to work. Keep it indoors, out of the weather, and choose Standard for its grip on tile and wood.

Kids and pocket money

A gold-coin or treasure rug is a fun way to talk with children about saving, counting and pocket money. Counting coins on the rug, or setting up a pretend shop on top of it, turns early money lessons into a game.

Your own bill

Want a giant, obviously fake bill with your own face in the portrait, your name as the denomination or your company's logo in the corner? Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′. Please only send artwork you're allowed to use, and keep it clearly decorative: we won't reproduce real currency. Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned.

Standard or Premium

Standard is best under desk chairs, in game rooms, dorms and anywhere with a hard or slippery floor, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best beside a bed or in a lounge. Both are printed the same way, so fine lines stay crisp and colors stay rich, and both go in the washing machine.

Sizes, shipping and returns

Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.

Care

Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the greens stay fresh and the lines stay crisp, unlike real money, which never seems to last.

How real banknotes are protected

Real money is hard to copy for a reason. US banknotes are printed on a special paper made of 75 percent cotton and 25 percent linen, which is why they feel different from ordinary paper and survive the wash. Modern bills include a security thread that glows under ultraviolet light, a watermark portrait you can see when holding the note up to the light, color-shifting ink on the denomination, and tiny microprinted words in the borders.

Our money rugs have none of those features. They are printed on velvet, far larger than any banknote, and designed as oversized, stylized art rather than reproductions, with invented engravings, playful portraits and bold dollar signs. That keeps them on the right side of the law and makes them clearly decorative.

Those security details can still inspire beautiful designs. A pattern of fine guilloche lines, the swirling engraved loops used on banknotes and certificates, makes a sophisticated rug in green and cream for a home office. A large, ornate number in a vintage engraving style is a stylish piece for a study, and an oversized, obviously playful bill with your own face or name in the portrait spot becomes a fun personal gift.
