About Dune Rugs
A planet of endless sand
A desert planet where water is more precious than gold, giant sandworms that rise from the dunes and a young noble who becomes a legend among the desert people: Dune is one of the greatest science-fiction stories ever told. A Dune-inspired rug brings its vast, sun-scorched beauty into a room: rolling dunes glowing at sunset, the ringed mouth of a sandworm filling a round rug, two moons rising over the sand, an orange spice haze or the fine ripples the wind carves in the desert. In warm sand, ochre and rust, these designs are as calm and sophisticated as they are epic. Every rug is printed into soft velvet and goes in the washing machine.
Dune-inspired designs
| Design | The look | Best in |
|---|---|---|
| Desert dunes | Rolling sand dunes at sunset | Living rooms, bedrooms |
| Sandworm maw | A giant ringed mouth of teeth on a round rug | Home theaters, game rooms |
| Twin moons | Two moons rising over a desert night | Bedrooms, studies |
| Spice haze | A soft orange haze over the sand | Living rooms, modern rooms |
| Wind ripples | Fine sand ripples in ochre and cream | Minimalist rooms, offices |
| Stone monuments | Massive brutalist walls and shadows | Studies, entryways |
Wind ripples and desert dunes are calm enough for a living room, while the sandworm maw is the dramatic choice for a home theater.
The book
Dune was written by Frank Herbert and published in 1965. It won the first Nebula Award for best novel and shared the Hugo Award, and it is often called the best-selling science-fiction novel of all time. Herbert, who became fascinated by sand dunes while researching a magazine article about efforts to stabilize them on the Oregon coast, built an enormously detailed world of politics, religion and ecology around the desert planet Arrakis, the only source of a priceless spice, and young Paul Atreides, whose family is sent to rule it. He wrote five sequels, and his son Brian Herbert has continued the saga with co-authors.
The films
David Lynch directed a film version in 1984, and Denis Villeneuve brought the story back in two acclaimed films, in 2021 and 2024, starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. The first won six Academy Awards, including for its cinematography, sound and visual effects, and much of it was filmed in the deserts of Jordan and Abu Dhabi. A third film has been planned to continue the story.
Desert dunes
A rug of rolling sand dunes, their ridges catching the low golden light of sunset, is a calm, warm and surprisingly versatile design for any home. It suits a modern living room with linen and wood, a bedroom with a desert palette or an office where you want a sense of space. For more desert designs, see our western rugs.
The sandworm
The sandworms of Arrakis are colossal creatures, hundreds of meters long, whose round mouths are ringed with crystalline teeth. A round rug with a giant sandworm's maw opening toward you is one of the most dramatic designs we make, a perfect conversation piece for a home theater or a game room. Our round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across. Ours is our own sandworm design.
Twin moons
Arrakis has two moons, and they rise over the desert at night. A design of two pale moons over dark dunes under a sky of stars is a quiet, beautiful rug for a bedroom or a study. For more night-sky designs, see our celestial rugs and space rugs.
The spice
The spice melange, found only in the deep desert, extends life, expands the mind and makes space travel possible, which is why everyone wants to control it. A spice-haze rug, a soft orange-cinnamon glow drifting over the sand, is an abstract, warm design that works in almost any modern room.
Wind ripples
Up close, desert sand forms fine, repeating ripples shaped by the wind. A sand-ripple rug in ochre, cream and soft rust is a minimalist, textural design for an office, a studio or a calm bedroom, and it reads as natural, not themed, in any room of the house.
Monumental architecture
The recent films are known for their vast, brutalist interiors: towering stone walls, narrow slits of light and huge shadows. A rug of monolithic stone shapes and deep shadow in gray and sand is a bold, architectural design for a study or an entryway; keep entry rugs indoors, out of the weather.
Water is life
On Arrakis, the desert people wear suits that recycle every drop of moisture, and wasting water is unthinkable. It's a powerful idea that inspired a generation of environmental thinking, and Herbert's deep interest in ecology runs through the whole saga.
Real deserts
The films found their Arrakis in real places: the red sandstone canyons of Wadi Rum in Jordan and the towering dunes near the Liwa Oasis, on the edge of the vast Empty Quarter of the Arabian Peninsula. In the United States, Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado has the tallest dunes in North America, rising hundreds of feet beneath snowy mountains. A desert rug is a beautiful souvenir of a trip to any of them.
Dorms and teen rooms
For a science-fiction fan heading to college, a sandworm or twin-moons rug is a grown-up way to show off a favorite saga in a small room. On a hard dorm floor, choose Standard so the rug stays put.
Pairing with furniture
Dune-inspired rugs suit warm, minimalist rooms: low wooden furniture, linen and boucle in cream and sand, terracotta pots, a few desert plants and brass lamps. Keep the walls warm white or soft clay, and let the rug bring the depth.
Living rooms
A dune or spice-haze rug in front of a cream sofa brings warmth and depth to a living room with natural wood, linen and a few desert plants. A 5×7 ft rug anchors a seating area. Our living room rugs page has more layouts.
Home theaters
For a home theater built for epic films, a sandworm or twin-moons rug in front of the screen sets the scene for a marathon. Choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², for a soft floor to sprawl on. Our home theater rugs page has more ideas.
Studies and offices
A wind-ripple or monument rug under a desk gives a study a calm, grown-up science-fiction feel. Under a rolling chair, choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put and lets the wheels roll. Our office and studio rugs page has more setups.
Bedrooms
A desert dunes or twin-moons rug at the foot of the bed brings a sense of quiet and space to a bedroom, especially with warm, low lighting and natural textiles. Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Hallways
A long hallway is perfect for a desert crossing. A custom runner up to 10 ft long with dunes rolling from one end to the other, or the long, rippling track of a sandworm, makes a striking passage. Choose Standard, which stays put as people walk by.
Colors
Dune-inspired designs look best in desert sand, ochre, rust, burnt orange, cream and deep shadow gray, with the pale blue of moonlight for night scenes.

Gifts
A Dune-inspired rug makes a great gift for a science-fiction reader, a film fan or anyone who loves desert landscapes. A dune rug is the most versatile; a sandworm maw is the most dramatic and the best conversation starter.
Your own design
Want dunes sized to your hallway, a desert with your family name carved into stone or two moons over your own photo of a desert trip? Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, or as a round rug. Please only send artwork you're allowed to use; film stills and house sigils belong to their owners. Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned.
Sizes, shipping and returns
Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft, and round rugs from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across. Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′, including long runners. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.
Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the desert stays golden, wash after wash.
Fremen life: stillsuits, crysknives and thumpers
Survival on Arrakis depends on Fremen technology, and much of it makes beautiful design. The stillsuit, a close-fitting desert suit, recycles the wearer's sweat and breath into drinkable water through layers of filters and catchpockets. The crysknife, the Fremen's sacred blade, is made from a sandworm's tooth, milky white and curved. The thumper, a simple spring-driven stake, beats a rhythm into the sand to call a worm, and maker hooks let riders climb aboard.
Those objects translate into rugs that feel like artifacts. A stillsuit schematic, its tubes and filters drawn like a technical diagram in rust and sand tones, suits a study or a science-fiction reader's den. A single crysknife on deep ochre is spare and striking for an entryway. A field of rippling dunes with a lone thumper standing upright waits for something enormous to answer.
Fremen culture also lives in its places. A sietch, a hidden cave community sealed against the desert, holds precious water in vast cisterns, and the deep desert stretches for thousands of miles of nothing but sand and sky. A rug of a sietch entrance glowing with lamplight, or a cistern's dark water reflecting the cave roof, captures the quiet, sacred side of the story.
Choose warm, sun-bleached colors for these designs, sand, rust, burnt orange and dusty blue, and the room takes on the calm of the open desert, ideal for a home theater ready for another trip to Arrakis.
Sand, rust and dusty blue sit comfortably with leather chairs, terracotta pots and the warm wood of a reading room.
