About Jurassic Park Rugs
Life finds a way into the living room
When Jurassic Park roared into theaters in 1993, audiences had never seen dinosaurs look so real, and a whole generation fell in love with paleontology. A Jurassic Park-inspired rug brings that sense of wonder, and a little danger, into a room: a towering T. rex skeleton stretched across the floor, a trail of enormous three-toed footprints, a mosquito frozen in a drop of glowing amber or a pair of giant wooden gates opening onto the jungle. Every design is printed into soft velvet and goes in the washing machine, so no one has to worry about muddy dinosaur tracks.
Jurassic Park-inspired designs
| Design | The look | Best in |
|---|---|---|
| T. rex skeleton | A giant fossil skeleton on sand or black | Kids' rooms, studies |
| Footprint trail | Huge three-toed tracks across the floor | Hallways, playrooms |
| Amber | A mosquito trapped in glowing amber | Round rugs, movie rooms |
| Jungle gates | Towering wooden gates and torches in the jungle | Entryways, playrooms |
| Field guide | Sketches and notes like an explorer's journal | Bedrooms, reading nooks |
| Island map | A volcanic island with paddocks and paths | Playrooms, game rooms |
The footprint trail makes a fun hallway runner, with giant tracks leading from one end to the other.
The book and the film
Jurassic Park began as a 1990 novel by Michael Crichton about a billionaire who uses dinosaur DNA, recovered from mosquitoes preserved in amber, to build a theme park on an island off Costa Rica, with disastrous results. Steven Spielberg's 1993 film combined groundbreaking computer animation with life-size animatronic dinosaurs, became the highest-grossing film ever made at the time and won three Academy Awards for its visual effects and sound. Its sequels, and the Jurassic World films that began in 2015, have kept dinosaurs roaring at the box office for more than thirty years.
The T. rex
Tyrannosaurus rex was one of the largest meat-eating land animals ever, about 40 feet long, with teeth the size of bananas and one of the strongest bites of any known land animal. A giant T. rex skeleton stretched across a rug, in bone white on sand or black, is a striking design for a child's bedroom or a grown-up study. As a shaped rug cut to the outline of a dinosaur skull or skeleton, it's even more dramatic. Our shaped rugs come in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm).
Not all Jurassic
Here's a fun fact for young experts: many of the dinosaurs in the film, including T. rex and Velociraptor, actually lived in the Cretaceous period, tens of millions of years after the Jurassic ended. And the real Velociraptor was about the size of a turkey and covered in feathers; the movie's larger raptors were closer to a cousin called Deinonychus. For more prehistoric designs, see our dinosaur rugs.
Footprint trails
Few things are as thrilling to a child as giant footprints. A rug with a trail of huge three-toed dinosaur tracks pressed into sand or mud, crossing the floor, turns a playroom into a dig site. A custom runner up to 10 ft long, with tracks leading down a hallway, is even more exciting. Choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put as little explorers run past.
Amber
In the story, the park's dinosaurs are cloned from blood found inside mosquitoes preserved in amber, fossilized tree resin. In reality, DNA doesn't survive for anything like that long, but amber really does trap insects in perfect detail for tens of millions of years. A round rug of glowing golden amber with a mosquito suspended inside is a beautiful, unusual design for a movie room or a study. Our round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across.
The jungle gates
One of the film's most memorable moments is the arrival at a pair of enormous wooden gates, flanked by flaming torches, that swing open onto the jungle. A jungle-gates rug of our own, towering gates and dense green foliage, is a fun, dramatic design just inside a playroom door, as if visitors were entering the park. For more leafy designs, see our botanical rugs.
Field-guide sketches
A rug designed like an explorer's field journal, pencil sketches of dinosaurs, measurements, notes and coffee stains on aged paper, is a clever design for a reading nook or a child who wants to be a paleontologist. It also suits a grown-up study with wood and leather.
The island map
A map of a volcanic island, with paddocks, jungle paths, a river, a visitor center and a helipad, is a perfect play rug for toy dinosaurs and jeeps. On a 4×6 or 5×7 ft rug, there's room for whole stories. Our kids play rugs page has more ideas.
Real paleontology
The film inspired many real scientists. Some of the most famous T. rex fossils, like the remarkably complete skeleton known as Sue, now at the Field Museum in Chicago, were found in the badlands of South Dakota and Montana. A family trip to a natural history museum and a dinosaur rug at home are a great combination for a curious child.
Kids' bedrooms
For a young dinosaur fan, a T. rex skeleton or footprint rug is the heart of the room. Pair it with jungle-green bedding, a shelf of toy dinosaurs and a few fossil replicas. On a hard floor, choose Standard so the rug stays put. For a softer bedroom rug, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m². Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Movie rooms
For grown-up fans, an amber or field-guide rug in front of the sofa is a stylish nod to the film for a movie night. Our home theater rugs page has more ideas.
Playrooms
An island map or a jungle-gates rug is the perfect base for imaginative play with toy dinosaurs, jeeps and figures. Standard holds up best to busy play.
The sound of a T. rex
No one knows what a real T. rex sounded like, so the film's sound designers invented one, reportedly blending the calls of a baby elephant, a tiger and an alligator into the famous roar. It's a great story to tell a young fan while they stomp across a footprint rug, roaring their own version.
Siblings and shared rooms
For siblings who both love dinosaurs, a shared island-map rug in the middle of the room gives them a whole world to play in, and two small fossil rugs, one beside each bed, keep the peace at bedtime.
Entryways
Just inside a playroom or bedroom door, a jungle-gates rug makes every entrance feel like arriving at the park. Keep front-door rugs indoors, out of the weather, and choose Standard for its grip on tile and wood.
Pairing with furniture
These rugs look great with natural wood, rattan baskets for toy dinosaurs, a few potted palms and framed fossil prints. For a grown-up room, pair an amber or field-guide rug with leather, brass and a globe for a classic explorer's study.
Colors
Jurassic Park-inspired designs look best in jungle greens, sand, earth brown, bone white and amber gold, with a warning-sign red and yellow for a pop of danger.
Other monsters
For the king of the monsters, see our Godzilla rugs, and for more films, our movie and pop culture rugs.
Gifts
A Jurassic Park-inspired rug makes a great birthday gift for a dinosaur-obsessed kid or a nostalgic gift for an adult who saw the film in 1993. A footprint trail is the most fun; a T. rex skeleton is the most impressive and the most likely to start a conversation.
Your own expedition
Want footprints leading to your child's bed, a field guide with their name as head paleontologist or an island map of your own design? Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, or cut it to shape. Please only send artwork you're allowed to use; the film's logo and stills belong to their owners. Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned.

Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the fossils stay crisp, wash after wash, for millions of years, or close enough.
Jurassic World and beyond
The story didn't end with the original trilogy. In 2015, Jurassic World reopened the park as a fully working theme park, complete with a giant mosasaur show, gyrosphere rides through the valley and a new hybrid dinosaur that escapes. Fallen Kingdom in 2018 and Dominion in 2022 followed, with Owen Grady's trained raptor, Blue, at the center, and Jurassic World Rebirth arrived in 2025. The animated series Camp Cretaceous brought the adventures to younger fans.
That era adds new designs to the classic gates and amber. A gyrosphere, a glass ball rolling through tall grass among grazing herbivores, is a fun, futuristic design for a child's room. Blue's striped gray-and-blue pattern makes a sleek raptor print, and a park map with attractions, paths and enclosures turns the floor into a theme park guide.
For families that love both eras, a rug that combines the original visitor center with the newer park's lagoon tells the whole story, from Isla Nublar's first disaster to the dinosaurs living among people in the later films.
For dinosaur-loving kids, a park map rug invites hours of play: toy dinosaurs roam their enclosures, jeeps follow the tour roads, and a gate at one end leads to the visitor center. Parents can join in by inventing new attractions or planning an escape. It's a playful, imaginative design that grows with a child's interest, from naming dinosaurs to learning which ones lived together, and it suits a playroom, a bedroom or a family movie room.
