About Lord of the Rings Rugs
One rug to rule the room
Few stories have built a world as complete as J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, with its maps, languages, songs and thousands of years of history. A Lord of the Rings-inspired rug brings a piece of it home: an old parchment map of Middle-earth spread across the floor, a round green door with a brass knob in the middle like the entrance to a hobbit hole, a golden ring glowing with fiery script on black or the White Tree in silver. It's the rug for a reading nook, a library, a game room or the floor in front of the TV for a full-trilogy marathon. Every design is printed into soft velvet and goes in the washing machine, which helps after a second breakfast.

The professor and his world
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was an Oxford professor of Anglo-Saxon and a lifelong inventor of languages. He began writing The Hobbit for his children, and it was published in 1937. Its much darker and larger sequel, The Lord of the Rings, took him over a decade and appeared in three volumes in 1954 and 1955: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. It follows the hobbit Frodo Baggins and his companions on a quest to destroy the One Ring, forged by the Dark Lord Sauron, in the fires where it was made. It has since become one of the best-selling novels ever written.
Maps of Middle-earth
Tolkien wrote that he began with a map and fitted the story to it, and the maps of Middle-earth, first drawn for publication by his son Christopher, are as beloved as the books. A parchment map rug, with the Shire in the west, the Misty Mountains, the forests of Fangorn and Mirkwood, the plains of Rohan and the shadowed lands of Mordor in the east, turns the floor into a quest. On a 4×6 or 5×7 ft rug, every region has room to breathe. For real-world maps, see our world map rugs.
The round green door
In Tolkien's telling, a hobbit hole is not a damp burrow at all but a snug, comfortable home, and its front door is perfectly round, painted green, with a shiny brass knob right in the center. A round rug with that door, framed by flowers and a stone step, is one of the most charming designs we print, perfect just inside the front door or in a cozy reading nook. Our round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across.
The ring
The One Ring is a plain gold band that, heated in fire, reveals a glowing inscription in the Black Speech of Mordor, written in Tolkien's Elvish script. A golden ring with fiery script on a black round rug is a dramatic, instantly recognizable design for a home theater, a game room or a man cave. Our home theater rugs and man cave rugs pages have more ideas.
Tolkien's languages
Tolkien invented whole languages before he invented the stories to go with them, including the Elvish tongues Quenya and Sindarin, with their own grammar, history and writing system, Tengwar. A rug with a border of flowing Elvish-style script and leaves is an elegant, subtle design for a library or a living room, recognizable to fans without shouting.
The White Tree
The White Tree, the emblem of the kingdom of Gondor, stands in the citadel of Minas Tirith, crowned by seven stars. A silver tree with stars on a black rug is a striking, elegant design for a bedroom or a study, a quiet symbol of hope and the return of the king.
The Shire
The Shire, with its rolling green hills, flower gardens, round doors and well-stocked pantries, is Tolkien's idea of a good, simple life. A Shire landscape rug in greens and golds is a cozy, gentle design, suitable for a child's room, a cottage or a reading nook, and a reminder that small, ordinary folk can do great things.
The films
Peter Jackson's film trilogy, released from 2001 to 2003 and filmed across the landscapes of New Zealand, brought Middle-earth to a new generation. The Return of the King won all eleven Academy Awards it was nominated for, including Best Picture, tying the record. The Hobbiton set in Matamata, New Zealand, is still open to visitors. A Middle-earth rug is the perfect spot for a movie marathon; the extended editions of the three films together run more than 11 hours.
Hobbit Day and Tolkien Reading Day
Fans celebrate Hobbit Day on September 22, the shared birthday of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, and Tolkien Reading Day on March 25, the date the Ring was destroyed in the story. Either makes a fun occasion for gifting a Middle-earth rug.
Libraries and reading nooks
A parchment map or an Elvish-script rug is the perfect foundation for a home library: dark wood shelves, a leather armchair, a reading lamp and a well-worn copy of the books. Choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², for a soft, warm floor to curl up on. Our office and studio rugs page has more ideas.
Game rooms and tabletop nights
Tolkien's world inspired generations of fantasy games, and a map rug under a gaming table sets the scene for a tabletop campaign. Under a gaming chair, choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put and lets the wheels roll. For more fantasy designs, see our Dungeons and Dragons rugs.
Entryways and hallways
A round green door just inside the front door gives guests a warm hobbit welcome; keep it indoors, out of the weather. Down a hallway, a custom runner up to 10 ft long can trace the Fellowship's journey from the Shire to Mount Doom. Choose Standard for both, for its grip on hard floors.
Bedrooms
In a bedroom, a White Tree on black or a soft Shire landscape sets a calm, storybook mood. Pair it with dark wood, green linen and a few framed maps. Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Kids and young readers
Many families now read The Hobbit aloud long before children are ready for the darker trilogy. A Shire landscape or a round green door makes a gentle, storybook rug for a young reader's bedroom, with a parchment map saved for when they're older. On a hard floor, choose Standard so the rug stays put.
Colors
Middle-earth designs look best in parchment, sepia and ink for maps; deep green, gold and earth brown for the Shire; black, silver and white for Gondor; and black with fiery orange and gold for the ring.

Gifts
A Middle-earth rug makes a great gift for a lifelong Tolkien reader, a fantasy gamer or a friend who rewatches the trilogy every winter. A round green door is the safest choice; a parchment map is the most impressive.

Sizes, shipping and returns
Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft, and round rugs from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across. Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′, including long runners. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.
Care
Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the map stays sharp, wash after wash, there and back again.
The Hobbit and the Lonely Mountain
Before The Lord of the Rings, there was The Hobbit, published in 1937, in which Bilbo Baggins leaves his round green door to help a company of dwarves reclaim the Lonely Mountain, Erebor, from the dragon Smaug. Tolkien drew Thror's Map for the book himself, with secret moon-letters that can only be read in the light of a particular moon, and the idea of a hidden message on a map has delighted readers ever since.
The story has been told on screen several times since, including Peter Jackson's three Hobbit films from 2012 to 2014. Middle-earth has continued to grow on screen with The Rings of Power series, which began in 2022, and the animated film The War of the Rohirrim in 2024.
The Hobbit inspires warmer, cozier rugs than the darker trilogy. A map of the journey from Hobbiton to the Lonely Mountain, with the forest of Mirkwood, the elves' halls and the mountain itself, makes a wonderful rug for a child's first fantasy bedroom. A dragon curled on a hoard of gold suits a game room, and a mountain door with faint letters glowing in the moonlight is a magical design for a reading nook.
These designs pair well with warm wood, round shapes, green and gold, and a shelf of well-loved books, everything a hobbit hole would need, including a comfortable chair.
