About Ninja Turtles Rugs

Heroes in a half shell

Four teenage turtles, mutated by glowing ooze, trained in ninjutsu by a wise old rat and living in the sewers beneath New York, where they eat an astonishing amount of pizza: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been one of pop culture's most lovable teams for forty years. A Ninja Turtles-inspired rug brings their world up from the sewers: a giant pepperoni pizza on a round rug, a heavy city manhole cover, a green turtle-shell pattern, the four turtles' mask colors in bold blocks or a glowing canister of green ooze. Every design is printed into soft velvet and goes in the washing machine, which matters when pizza is involved.

Where the Turtles came from

The Turtles were created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, two young comic artists who self-published the first black-and-white issue in 1984 from their small studio in New Hampshire, partly as a parody of the gritty ninja comics of the day. The idea took off, and the 1987 animated series made the four brothers a worldwide craze, with their surfer slang, their love of pizza and their battles against the villainous Shredder and his Foot Clan. A 1990 live-action film became one of the most successful independent films of its time, and the Turtles have returned again and again, most recently in the animated film Mutant Mayhem in 2023.

Named after Renaissance artists

The four brothers are named after Italian Renaissance masters: Leonardo, who leads in blue with two swords; Raphael, the hothead in red with a pair of sai; Donatello, the inventor in purple with a bo staff; and Michelangelo, the joker in orange with nunchucks. It's a fun way to introduce kids to Leonardo da Vinci and friends. A rug in the style of a Renaissance sketchbook, sepia drawings of turtles, notes and inventions on aged paper, is a clever design for an older fan's study.

The wise teacher

The brothers were raised and trained by their sensei, a patient, elderly rat who taught them discipline, loyalty and to look out for one another. A calm design inspired by his teaching, a dojo floor with tatami-style mats and a bonsai, is a quieter choice for an older fan's room or a home martial arts corner.

The pizza

The Turtles' love of pizza is legendary, and a giant pepperoni pizza is a perfect round rug: golden crust, bubbling cheese and plenty of pepperoni. On a 3.9 to 5.2 ft (120 to 160 cm) rug, it's a fun, delicious-looking centerpiece for a kid's room or a game room. Our round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across. For a kitchen or a pizza-night family room, it's a guaranteed smile, and it goes in the washing machine.

The manhole cover

The Turtles come and go through the city's manholes, and a round cast-iron manhole cover, with its textured pattern and city lettering of our own, makes a brilliant round rug, as if the floor were a street with a secret entrance below. It's a great joke just inside a kid's bedroom door; for an entryway rug, keep it indoors, out of the weather.

The shell

A turtle's shell is made of bony plates covered in tough scales called scutes, arranged in a pattern of hexagons. A green turtle-shell rug, or a rug cut to the oval shape of a shell, is a simple, graphic design for a kid's bedroom. Our shaped rugs come in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm).

Four colors, four brothers

The turtles' mask colors are one of the most recognizable color codes in cartoons. A rug of four bold color blocks, blue, red, purple and orange, is a subtle, modern nod to the team, and a perfect design for siblings who each have a favorite turtle.

Green ooze

It all started with a canister of glowing green mutagen spilling into the sewer. A rug with a glowing ooze canister, or splashes of luminous green on black, is a fun design for a teen room or a gaming setup with green RGB lighting.

Rooftops at night

When the Turtles leave the sewers, they leap across the city's rooftops at night, past water towers and fire escapes under the moon. A night-rooftops rug is a moody, atmospheric design for a bedroom, and on a custom runner up to 10 ft long, it turns a hallway into a rooftop chase. Choose Standard, 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put as people walk by.

Real turtles

Here's a fact for young fans: a real turtle can't climb out of its shell, because the shell is part of its skeleton, built from its ribs and backbone fused together. There are more than three hundred species of turtles and tortoises, and some live for over a hundred years. Red-eared sliders, with a red stripe behind each eye, are among the most common pet turtles in America, and none of them, as far as we know, practices ninjutsu.

Pizza night

For families with a weekly pizza night, a giant pizza rug in the family room makes it official. Spread the real boxes on the coffee table, put on a movie and let the kids eat on the rug, since it goes straight in the washing machine afterward.

Pairing with furniture

These rugs suit playful rooms: green or grey bedding, a skateboard mounted on the wall, metal storage lockers, a few framed comic covers of your own and a beanbag for game nights. Keep the walls simple and let the bold colors do the talking.

Kids' bedrooms

For a young fan, a pizza or shell rug is the heart of a Turtles bedroom. Pair it with green bedding, a skateboard on the wall and a toy box full of figures. On a hard floor, choose Standard so the rug stays put. For a softer bedroom rug, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m². Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.

Playrooms

A sewer-lair or city-streets rug is a perfect base for action figures, with manholes to climb out of and rooftops to defend. Our kids play rugs page has more ideas.

Game rooms and grown-up fans

For adults who grew up with the 1987 cartoon, a pizza or four-color rug is a nostalgic touch for a game room or a basement, especially next to a retro arcade cabinet. For more, see our arcade rugs and retro rugs.

Skateboarding

The Turtles have always loved skateboarding, and a rug with a skateboard deck, ramps and graffiti fits right in with their style. For more street style, see our graffiti rugs.

Colors

Ninja Turtles-inspired designs look best in turtle green with the four mask colors, blue, red, purple and orange, plus pizza reds and golds and sewer greys.

Other heroes

Gifts

A Ninja Turtles-inspired rug makes a great birthday gift for a young fan, or a nostalgic gift for a grown-up who still knows all the words to the theme song. A pizza round rug is the most fun choice.

Your own design

Want a pizza with your child's name in pepperoni, a manhole cover with your street name or four color blocks with each sibling's name? Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, or cut it to shape. Please only send artwork you're allowed to use; official character art and logos belong to their owners. Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned.

Sizes, shipping and returns

Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′, including long runners. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.

Care

Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot pizza spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the green stays bright, wash after wash. Cowabunga.

Shredder, Krang and the turtles' friends

The Turtles' world is full of memorable allies and enemies. April O'Neil, the reporter in a yellow jumpsuit from the 1987 cartoon, became their first human friend, and Casey Jones, the vigilante in a hockey mask with a bag of sports equipment, joined the fight on the streets. On the other side, the Shredder leads the Foot Clan, Krang, a pink, talking brain from Dimension X, rides in a robotic body, and Bebop and Rocksteady, a mutant warthog and rhino, provide the comic muscle.

The villains' giant rolling fortress, the Technodrome, a huge sphere with a single eye-like turret, is one of the cartoon's most recognizable machines. The 2023 film Mutant Mayhem gave all of them a fresh, sketchbook-style look for a new generation.

Those characters make playful rugs without the turtles themselves. A hockey mask and a crossed pair of sticks on a city sidewalk is pure Casey Jones, a fun design for a teen's room or a hockey fan. A pink brain on a robotic body is a silly, eye-catching rug for a game room, and a giant metal sphere rising from the street captures the Technodrome's menace for a fan of the 1980s cartoon.

Mixing heroes and villains in one room works well too: a manhole cover by the door, a pizza by the bed and a Technodrome rug in the middle, so the whole sewer-and-street adventure plays out across the floor.
