About Batman Rugs

Gotham needs you tonight

A Batman rug brings the Dark Knight into a room: the Bat-Signal cutting through the clouds over Gotham, the city's gothic towers glowing at night, a burst of 1960s comic-book sound effects or the sleek silhouette of the Batmobile. The Bat-Signal on a round rug is the clear favorite, simple, iconic and perfect for a circle. Every design is printed into soft velvet, so deep blacks and bright yellows come out bold, and every rug goes in the washing machine.

The Dark Knight's history

Batman was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger and first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. Bruce Wayne, a billionaire who watched his parents die as a boy, trains himself to fight crime in Gotham City with his wits, his gadgets and his loyal butler Alfred. Robin joined him in 1940, the same year the Joker first appeared. Since then, Batman has starred in comics, the much-loved 1960s television series, the 1990s animated series, blockbuster films from 1989 onward, Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy and the acclaimed Arkham video games, making him one of the most enduring heroes ever created, in any medium.

For a toddler, the 1960s comic panels are friendlier than a dark Gotham skyline, and their bright pop colors keep a bedroom cheerful.

The Bat-Signal

When Gotham needs help, Commissioner Gordon switches on a giant searchlight that throws a bat-shaped beam onto the clouds. It's one of the most recognizable images in all of pop culture, and it seems made for a round rug: a pool of yellow light in a black or stormy sky. On a 3.9 to 5.2 ft (120 to 160 cm) round rug, it's a dramatic centerpiece for a bedroom, a game room or a home theater. Our round rugs page shows each size in a room.

Gotham City

Gotham is as much a character in the story as Batman himself: a dark, sprawling city of gothic towers, gargoyles, rain-slicked streets and neon signs. A Gotham skyline rug, the city silhouetted against a moonlit sky, is a moody, cinematic design for a living room, a home theater or a man cave, and it suits anyone who loves gothic architecture. For more dark, dramatic designs, see our gothic rugs.

POW! The 1960s

The 1966 television series, with its bright colors, cheerful heroes and on-screen sound effects like POW, BAM and ZAP during every fight, is a beloved, funny side of Batman. A comic-panel rug in that pop-art style is bright and playful, a great choice for a child's room, a playroom or a retro den. For more bold pop designs, see our pop art rugs.

The Batmobile and gadgets

Every version of Batman has his very own Batmobile, from the sleek 1960s car with its red pinstripes to the armored tanks of the modern films. A Batmobile rug is a big favorite for kids who love cars, and it can double as a play rug for a whole fleet of toy vehicles. Utility belts, grappling hooks and batarangs make fun, graphic designs too.

The rogues' gallery

Batman's villains are widely considered among the very best in comics: the Joker with his purple suit and green hair, Harley Quinn in red and black diamonds, Catwoman, the Penguin, the Riddler with his question marks, Two-Face and more. A Joker-inspired rug, chaotic playing cards and purple and green, is a bold design for a teen's room or a game room; a Riddler question-mark pattern is a clever, graphic choice.

The animated series

For many fans, the definitive Batman is the one from the animated series that began in 1992, with its dark, art deco-inspired Gotham drawn on black backgrounds under blood-red skies, and its haunting orchestral score. It also introduced Harley Quinn, who went on to become one of the most popular characters in comics. A rug inspired by that noir style, deep reds and blacks with sharp, angular buildings, is a stylish, nostalgic design for a grown-up fan.

Robin and the Bat-family

Batman rarely ever works alone. Robin, first played by the young acrobat Dick Grayson in 1940, has been followed by several others, and the wider Bat-family includes Batgirl, Nightwing and more. A design with Batman and Robin side by side is a fun choice for brothers, sisters or a parent and child who share the love of the comics.

Heroes and villains in a shared room

When siblings share a room and one always plays the hero while the other plays the villain, a split rug, the Bat-Signal on one side and the Joker's playing cards on the other, settles the debate with a smile.

Batman Day

Fans celebrate Batman Day every September with events, comics and screenings, and a new Batman rug is a fun way to mark it, or a birthday for a fan of any age.

Gifts

A Batman rug is a great gift for a young superhero, a lifelong comic collector, a film fan or a gamer who knows every corner of Arkham. The Bat-Signal round rug is the safest choice; a Gotham skyline is the most cinematic.

Kids' rooms

For young superheroes, a Batman rug makes a bedroom feel like a secret headquarters. A Bat-Signal round rug by the bed, a Batmobile rug for play or a bright comic-panel rug in the middle of the floor all work really well. On a hard floor, choose Standard: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², so the rug stays put during daring rescues. Our kids play rugs page has more ideas.

Teen rooms and game rooms

Older fans often prefer a darker, more grown-up look: a black cowl silhouette, a Gotham skyline or an Arkham-inspired design under the gaming chair. Under a chair, choose Standard in 3.3×5 or 4×6 ft, which stays put and lets wheels roll freely. For more setup ideas, see our gaming rugs.

Man caves and home theaters

A Gotham or Bat-Signal rug is a natural fit for a man cave or a home theater, especially one with dark walls, a big screen and a collection of figures. Choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², for a lounge where you'll be watching for hours. Our man cave rugs and home theater rugs pages have more ideas.

The Batcave

Hidden beneath Wayne Manor, the Batcave is every fan's dream room: computers, trophies, a giant penny and a dinosaur from old adventures, and the Batmobile waiting on its platform. A Batcave-inspired rug, dark stone and glowing screens, is a perfect finishing touch for a basement den or a gaming room built as a hideout.

Other heroes

If your family loves more than one hero, see our Superman rugs and the full range on our DC Comics rugs page, plus our Marvel rugs.

Your own design

Want your child's name in a comic-book burst, or a design built around artwork you own? Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, or cut it to shape. Please only send artwork you're allowed to use; your own names, drawings and photos are all fine. Custom rugs can't be returned, so please check names and spelling before ordering.

Standard or Premium

Standard is best for kids' rooms, game rooms, under desk chairs and on hard floors, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best in home theaters, lounges and beside a bed. Both are printed the same way, so blacks stay deep and yellows stay bright, and both go in the washing machine.

Sizes, shipping and returns

Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.

Care

Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the Bat-Signal keeps shining and Gotham stays dark, wash after wash.

A note on the character

Gotham on screen, era by era

Every screen Batman brought a different Gotham. The 1966 film and TV series with Adam West were bright, colorful and full of onomatopoeia. Tim Burton's Batman in 1989 and Batman Returns in 1992 built a gothic city of towering spires in black and gold. Christopher Nolan's trilogy, from 2005 to 2012, set the story in a realistic, steel-gray metropolis, and Matt Reeves' The Batman in 2022 drenched it in rain and red light.

Each era suggests its own rug. A pop-art comic burst in primary colors suits a kid's room and anyone who loves the 1960s camp. A gothic black-and-gold skyline feels like the Burton films, elegant enough for a living room. A cool gray and blue city at night fits a modern home office, and a dark, rain-streaked street lit in red works under a gaming setup or in a home theater before the next viewing.

For a family of fans, choosing an era can be part of the fun: kids may love the bright 1960s colors while parents prefer Burton's gothic city.
