Custom Mahjong Mat – Your Design, Sized to Your Table

A mahjong mat is the soft layer you lay on the table before a game: it quiets the clatter of shuffling tiles, keeps painted tile faces from scratching, holds your walls where you build them and protects the tabletop. A custom mahjong mat is the same mat printed with a design you choose, so the table your group gathers around every week is yours: a family photo, a painting, a pattern in your favourite colours, a monogram, or your club's name and logo.

Every custom mahjong mat here is made to order from the image you upload. You place the design yourself and see the finished mat in 3D and on your own table in AR, at its real size, before anything is printed. Measure the top of your table first. A mahjong mat should lie flat on the tabletop with a little table showing around it, so the edges never hang over and catch a sleeve. Our two standard sizes cover most games:

• L, 31.5″ × 31.5″ (81 × 81 cm): the full playing field most American Mah Jongg groups choose, with room for four racks, four walls and the discard pile. It's made for a standard card table, which in the US is usually 34″ (86 cm) square, leaving about an inch of table on each side.
• M, 23.5″ × 23.5″ (60 × 60 cm): for smaller tables, cozy corners and games that travel. It still fits four players' walls and a discard area in the middle.
• Custom size, 15.7″ to 39.4″ (40 to 100 cm) each way: for a larger table, a square dining table, a rectangular table, or a mat that should match a table exactly. Measure the tabletop and take off about an inch on each side.

When neither standard size fits, switch to Custom size and type your own width and height, from 15.7″ to 39.4″ (40 to 100 cm), to the millimetre. The width and height are separate, so a rectangular table can have a rectangular mat. The builder shows your mat to scale, in inches and centimetres, with its price.

A custom size is made by hand: we print your design, cut the mat to your measurements with square corners and stitch the edge in black. On our two standard sizes the stitching carries your design's colours; on a custom size it's black, so keep faces, names and text at least 0.6″ (1.5 cm) in from every edge. A custom mat that fits within the L size costs the same as the smallest standard size it fits in, plus $10 for cutting and stitching it by hand; a bigger mat is priced by its size.

The L mat is sized for the way American Mah Jongg is played in the US: four players, four racks, four walls in front of them and the discard pile in the middle. The micro-woven cloth gives tiles just enough grip, so they slide when you push them and stay put when you stack them, and walls hold their shape through the Charleston and the rest of the hand.

At 3 mm the mat is cushioned enough that tiles lift easily and the tabletop is protected, and low enough that racks sit steady on it. The natural rubber base grips wood, glass and felt, so the mat doesn't creep across the table mid-game. The mat itself works for any style of mahjong, from Chinese and Hong Kong to Riichi.

A tablecloth or table cover hides the table; a mahjong mat is built for the game. A cloth is thin, so tiles still clatter on the table underneath, and it slides when the walls are pushed out. A mahjong mat has a cushioned 3 mm layer that turns the shuffle into a soft rustle, a fabric top that keeps tiles from scratching, and a rubber base that stays put. When the game is over, it rolls up instead of needing to be folded and ironed.

A personalized mahjong mat is one of the few mahjong gifts nobody else will have: a mat with her name or monogram, a photo of the group from last year's trip, a design in the colours of her home, or a pattern made from her favourite flowers. Your custom mat is made the same way as our ready-made mahjong table mats, with your design on top:

• Micro-woven fabric top: smooth, quiet and gentle on painted tile faces, printed edge to edge with your design.
• 3 mm neoprene: cushioned enough for easy tile pickup, low enough for steady racks.
• Natural rubber base: textured and non-slip on wood, glass and felt tables.
• Stitched edges: double-stitched on the standard sizes, so they don't fray, curl or peel; a custom size is overlocked in black after cutting.

Designing a custom mahjong mat takes a few minutes, and nothing is printed until you order.

• Upload your design. Drop a PNG, JPG or WebP file (up to 40 MB) into the upload box, or browse for it. A square image fits a square mat best.
• Choose the size: M, L, or Custom size with your own width and height.
• Place the design. Move and zoom it until it sits where you want it, keeping faces and text away from the edges.
• Check it in 3D, then on your phone in AR, on your own table at its real size.
• Add it to your cart. If your image needs it, we sharpen it up for print and email you a proof to approve before printing.

Start from the largest version of your image you have. For a sharp print at full size, aim for about 150 DPI: around 4,800 × 4,800 pixels for the L mat and 3,550 × 3,550 pixels for the M mat. The print check under your upload measures your file against the size you chose and shows it as soft, good or sharp.

Remember what will sit on the mat: racks and walls cover a band along each edge, and the discard pile covers the middle. Faces, names and logos read best a little in from the edges, and patterns, landscapes and all-over designs look good even with tiles on top. A smaller image isn't a dead end: if your file is low resolution, we sharpen it up for print and email you a proof before anything is printed.

Your mahjong mat is machine washable: if it gets dirty, wash it on a gentle cycle with cold water, then let it dry flat. Don't use bleach or an iron. Store it rolled rather than folded, so the surface stays smooth for the next game, and roll it the same way to take it to a friend's table or to the club.
