About this design
Purple hydrangea, pink peony and blossom crowd the eight-point star medallion at the center of this chinoiserie mahjong mat, two bluebirds perched among the flowers. Blue-and-white porcelain panels and misty mountain scenes fill the surrounding tiles. A navy and gold floral border frames the whole layered design.
On a dressed table it reads full and richly colored. The pale star center keeps tiles and racks clear, while the massed hydrangea and blue panels carry the eye outward. Guests find the mountain vignettes in the corners.
Drawn in a layered chinoiserie style, the design sets hydrangea, peony and blossom with bluebirds inside a scalloped eight-point star, ringed by blue-and-white porcelain panels and ink-wash landscapes. The densest work fills the border and center; the surrounding field stays open enough for building walls.
