About this design
Lush hydrangea, peony and cherry blossom fill the star-shaped center medallion of this chinoiserie mahjong mat, two bluebirds perched among the flowers. Blue-and-white porcelain panels and misty mountain scenes surround it. A navy and gold floral border frames the whole richly layered design.
On a dressed table it reads full and luxurious. The pale center keeps tiles and racks clear, while the massed blooms and blue panels pull the eye across the mat. Guests find the little mountain vignettes tucked in the corners.
Drawn in a layered chinoiserie style, the design sets hydrangea, peony and blossom with bluebirds inside a scalloped star cartouche, ringed by blue-and-white porcelain panels and ink-wash landscapes. The densest work sits at the border and center; the surrounding field stays open enough for building walls.
