About Lego Rugs
A floor that's made for building
For a child, or an adult, who loves building with toy bricks, a brick-themed rug is the perfect base: a giant green baseplate with rows of studs, a cheerful pattern of bright red, blue, yellow and green bricks, or a city layout with roads and plots waiting to be built on. Better still, a rug under the building zone catches the little pieces before they disappear into the corners of the room. Ours are printed edge to edge on soft velvet, and every rug goes in the washing machine, which helps after a long day of building, snacking and imagining.
A little brick history
The LEGO Group was founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter in Billund, Denmark, and its name comes from the Danish words leg godt, meaning play well. The modern interlocking brick, with its studs on top and tubes underneath, was patented in 1958, and the little figures that populate brick cities arrived twenty years later. The building system is so flexible that just six standard rectangular bricks with eight studs can be combined in more than 915 million different ways.
Brick-inspired designs
| Design | The look | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Giant baseplate | A green or grey plate with rows of studs | Building zones, playrooms |
| Bright brick pattern | Stacked bricks in primary colors | Kids' bedrooms, playrooms |
| Brick-shaped rug | A single giant brick seen from above | Beside a bed, under a desk |
| City layout | Roads, parks and empty plots to build on | Playrooms, family rooms |
| Space and castle layouts | Moon bases or castle grounds for themed builds | Kids' rooms, game rooms |
| Color-sorting grid | Squares in each brick color for sorting | Building corners, classrooms |
The giant baseplate is a printed design, not real studs, so it gives builders a flat space to sort and display their creations, and it goes in the washing machine afterward.
The giant baseplate
A baseplate rug, a big green or grey square covered in rows of printed studs, looks like the flat plate that every brick city starts from. It's instantly recognizable, and it makes the whole floor feel like part of the build, and it's a natural spot for laying out projects. In green, it feels like grass; in grey, like a city street; in blue, like open water for a harbor or a pirate ship.
Catching the pieces
Every parent knows the sharp pain of stepping on a small brick in bare feet. A rug under the building area won't stop every escape, but it keeps most pieces in one place and makes them easier to see and gather. A light-colored rug makes small pieces easier to spot; a busy brick pattern hides them, so for a building zone, a plain baseplate design is often the more practical choice. Shake the rug out over a storage tub after a building session, and most stray pieces will come right back.
A building zone
A good building corner has a rug on the floor, low storage bins sorted by color or type, a small table or a flat board for big projects and a shelf to display finished builds. A 4×6 or 5×7 ft rug gives one or two builders room to spread out. On a hard floor, choose Standard: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², so the rug stays put while kids crawl around. For more play ideas, see our kids play rugs.
Brick-shaped rugs
A rug cut to look like a single giant brick seen from above, a rectangle with circles of studs, is a playful, graphic piece for a child's bedroom or a game room. Our shaped rugs come in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). A red brick beside the bed or a yellow one under a desk chair is a fun, instantly recognizable touch.
Cities, castles and space
A rug printed with a layout, city roads and parks, a castle courtyard with a moat or a moon base with landing pads, gives builders a ready-made world to fill. Kids build houses along the streets, towers inside the walls or rockets on the launch pads, and the story slowly grows across the whole floor. For more space and town designs, see our space rugs and kids play rugs.
Sorting and learning
A color-sorting grid, squares in red, blue, yellow, green, white and black, turns tidying up into a game and helps younger children learn their colors. In a classroom, a brick-themed rug makes a fun spot for engineering challenges and group building. For more, see our classroom rugs.
Kids' bedrooms
A bright brick pattern makes a cheerful bedroom rug for a young builder, especially paired with storage bins, a display shelf and a few framed posters of favorite builds. For the softest bedside rug, choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m². Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.
Adult builders
Brick building isn't just for kids at all: many adults build large, detailed sets and display them in dedicated rooms. A grey or black baseplate rug, or a minimal brick pattern in muted colors, suits a grown-up display room, giving it a sense of theme without looking like a playroom. Under a building desk with a rolling chair, choose Standard, which lets wheels roll freely.
Building skills
Building with bricks is much more than fun. Following instructions step by step, planning a design, testing whether a tower will stand and fixing it when it doesn't all build patience, problem-solving and spatial thinking. A dedicated building rug gives that kind of play a home, so projects can stay out and grow over several days instead of being packed away every evening.
Big builds and siblings
When brothers and sisters build together, a large rug gives everyone room to work on their own section of a shared city, a castle or a space station. A 5×7 ft baseplate design, or a custom size up to 5′11″ × 10′, makes enough space for a really ambitious project.
Building parties
Brick-building birthday parties are a favorite: a pile of bricks, a timed building challenge and a prize for the most creative model. A baseplate rug in the middle of the room makes the perfect party floor, and it stays in the child's room afterward. Order early, since every rug is printed to order.
Adult fans and dorms
Adult fans of brick building have their own community, with huge collections, conventions and detailed display rooms. For a grown-up builder's dorm or apartment, a muted brick-pattern rug beside a display shelf adds personality without looking like a child's room.
Display shelves
Finished builds deserve a proper place to shine. A rug in the same colors as your display, under a wall of floating shelves, ties the room together and makes a collection look curated.
Gifts
A brick-themed rug is a great gift for a young builder's birthday, a holiday or a new playroom, and a fun one for an adult collector. A baseplate rug is the safest choice; a custom rug with the builder's name in brick-style letters is the most personal.
Your own design
Want a baseplate in your favorite color, your child's name in chunky brick letters or a layout of your own town? Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′. Please only send artwork you're allowed to use, which rules out official logos you don't own. Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned, so please check names and spelling before ordering.
Other play favorites
If your child loves racing as much as building, see our race track rugs, and for trains, our train rugs.
Standard or Premium
Standard is best for building zones, playrooms, classrooms and anywhere with a hard or slippery floor, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best beside a bed. Both are printed the same way, so bright colors stay bright, and both go in the washing machine. Before washing, shake the rug well to remove any stray pieces.
Sizes, shipping and returns
Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and brick-shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.
Care
Shake out any stray pieces first. Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so your bricks stay bright and the studs stay crisp, build after build.
A note on the brand
The brick, measured
The modern interlocking toy brick was patented in 1958, and its design has stayed compatible ever since, so a brick made today still clicks onto one from the 1960s. That works because the measurements are precise: the studs sit 8 millimeters apart, a standard brick is 9.6 millimeters tall, and a thin plate is exactly a third of that, 3.2 millimeters. Manufacturing tolerances are measured in thousandths of a millimeter, which is why the bricks hold together firmly but still come apart.
Those numbers inspire a fun rug for builders: a blueprint-style drawing of a 2×4 brick, with its studs, tubes and dimensions labeled in white lines on blue, like an engineer's technical sheet. It suits an adult builder's display room, a teen's desk area or a classroom makerspace, and it rewards anyone curious enough to read the numbers.
For younger builders, the same idea becomes a counting and measuring game. A rug marked with a grid of stud-sized dots lets children line up bricks, count studs, compare lengths and build to size, turning play into early math without anyone noticing.
Builders of every age also appreciate a rug that catches dropped pieces against a contrasting background, so a small gray piece doesn't disappear into a gray floor.
