About Dinosaur Rugs

A prehistoric world on the bedroom floor

For a child who loves dinosaurs, a dinosaur rug is more than decoration: it's a whole world to play in. The classic design is a play-mat scene, a prehistoric landscape with volcanoes, ferns, a swamp and winding paths where toy dinosaurs can roam. Close behind are rugs cut to the shape of a dinosaur itself, a T. rex or a Stegosaurus with its plates, and museum-style fossil skeletons for older kids. Every rug is printed into soft velvet and goes in the washing machine, which, in a room where dinosaurs are constantly battling, matters a great deal.

Dinosaur play mats

A dinosaur play mat turns the floor into a prehistoric adventure. A volcano in one corner, a lake in another, a forest of ferns and palm-like cycads, a few eggs in a nest and paths connecting it all: children can spend hours inventing stories with their toy dinosaurs. It encourages imaginative play, and it finally gives a pile of plastic dinosaurs a proper place to live. A 4×6 or 5×7 ft rug is the best size for a play mat, big enough for two or three children to play together. On a hard floor, choose Standard: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², so the mat stays put during the fiercest battles. Our kids play rugs page has more play-mat ideas.

Dinosaur-shaped rugs

A rug cut to the outline of a dinosaur is one of the most fun things you can put in a child's room. Our shaped rugs come in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm):

  • T. rex, with its huge head, tiny arms and powerful tail.
  • Stegosaurus, with its row of plates along the back and spikes on the tail.
  • Triceratops, with its three horns and wide frill.
  • Brachiosaurus, with its long neck reaching up for leaves.
  • A baby dinosaur hatching from a cracked egg, perfect for a nursery.

A small shaped dinosaur beside a bed is the first thing little feet touch in the morning; a large one in the middle of the room is a centerpiece.

Fossils and skeletons

Older children, and many adults, love the museum look: a dinosaur skeleton laid out like a fossil in the rock, white bones on a dark slate or sand-colored background. It feels scientific and a little dramatic, perfect for a young paleontologist's room or a study. Many American museums have famous skeletons, like Sue, the remarkably complete T. rex at Chicago's Field Museum, and a fossil rug can be a lovely reminder of a family trip to see one.

Footprint trails

A trail of three-toed dinosaur footprints crossing a rug, or running the length of a hallway on a custom runner up to 10 ft long, is a playful, subtle design that children love to follow, stepping from print to print. It suits a hallway leading to a child's bedroom or the entrance to a playroom, turning every trip down the hall into a hunt.

Pastel dinosaurs for nurseries

Dinosaurs don't always have to be fierce. Soft, rounded dinosaurs in pastel greens, blues, peaches and lilacs, with friendly faces, make a gentle, modern nursery theme that works for any baby. Choose Premium, 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², for tummy time and first crawls; switch to Standard's non-slip back once your child is walking on a smooth floor. Our kids and nursery rugs have more ideas.

Real dinosaur facts for curious kids

A dinosaur rug is a great starting point for conversations, and children love facts. A few to share:

DinosaurWhen it livedFun fact
StegosaurusLate Jurassic, about 150 million years agoIt lived so long before T. rex that T. rex lived closer in time to us than to Stegosaurus
Tyrannosaurus rexLate Cretaceous, about 68 to 66 million years agoIt lived in western North America, including today's Montana
TriceratopsLate Cretaceous, at the same time as T. rexThe two may have met, and Triceratops fossils show bite marks
VelociraptorLate Cretaceous, in what is now MongoliaIt was about the size of a turkey and had feathers

A dinosaur rug doubles as a lesson on the floor, since kids quickly learn that Stegosaurus and T. rex never met, while T. rex and Triceratops probably did.

The word dinosaur was coined in 1842 and means "terrible lizard." Dinosaurs disappeared about 66 million years ago, when a giant asteroid struck the Earth, but not entirely: birds are living descendants of dinosaurs. And one more surprise for dinosaur fans: the flying pterosaurs and the swimming plesiosaurs, though they lived alongside dinosaurs, weren't dinosaurs at all.

Dinosaurs across America

The United States is one of the richest places in the world for dinosaur fossils. At Dinosaur National Monument, on the border of Colorado and Utah, visitors can see a rock wall embedded with around 1,500 dinosaur bones. The badlands of Montana have yielded famous T. rex and Triceratops finds, and natural history museums from New York to Los Angeles display towering skeletons. For a family that loves road trips, a dinosaur rug can be a souvenir of a visit, or the inspiration for one.

Dinosaur birthday parties

Dinosaur birthdays are a classic: a volcano cake, dinosaur eggs to hunt for and a herd of toy dinosaurs on every table. A dinosaur play mat makes a perfect party centerpiece for games and photos, and it stays in the child's room afterward as a reminder of the day. Order early, since every rug is printed to order.

Bedtime with dinosaurs

For a calm bedtime, pair a fossil or pastel dinosaur rug with glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling and a soft night light. Lying on the rug to read a dinosaur book before bed becomes a favorite ritual, and Premium's plush velvet makes it comfortable.

A dinosaur bedroom

A dinosaur bedroom can grow with a child. For a toddler, cute pastel dinosaurs, a shaped rug by the bed and a few plush toys. For a preschooler, a play-mat scene in the middle of the floor and a shelf of toy dinosaurs. For an older child, a fossil skeleton rug, a few museum posters and a model volcano. Keep the walls simple, in green, sand or soft blue, and let the rug carry the theme. Our bedroom rugs page has more layouts.

Playrooms and classrooms

In a playroom or a classroom, a large dinosaur rug becomes a gathering spot for story time and a stage for play. A 5×7 ft rug suits most playrooms; a custom size up to 5′11″ × 10′ covers more of a classroom floor. Every rug goes in the washing machine after paint, glue and snacks. Our classroom rugs page has more ideas.

Bathrooms

A small dinosaur rug makes bath time more fun. One honest note: our rugs are printed velvet, not thick, quick-drying bath mats, so place one by the sink or the door rather than right where a child climbs out of the tub, and choose Standard for its grip on tiles.

Movie dinosaurs

If your child's dinosaur love started with the movies, our Jurassic Park rugs page has designs inspired by the films. For other animal designs, see our animal rugs, and for the wonders of space, our space rugs.

Round dinosaur rugs

A round dinosaur rug, a T. rex inside a circle, a nest of eggs or a volcano seen from above, is a soft, friendly shape for a reading corner or a play area. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across. Our round rugs page shows each size in a room.

Your child's name

Want your child's name in big, bold letters beside their favorite dinosaur, or a design built around a drawing they made themselves? Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′, or cut it to shape. A rug made from a child's own dinosaur drawing is a keepsake they'll treasure. Custom rugs can't be returned, so please check names and spelling before ordering.

Standard or Premium

Standard is best for play mats, hard floors, playrooms and bathrooms, because its non-slip back stays put. Premium is softer and warmer, best in nurseries and beside a bed. Both are printed the same way, so the colors stay bright, and both go in the washing machine.

Sizes, shipping and returns

Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and dinosaur-shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.

Care

Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the colors survive every stampede, every battle and every muddy-shoed adventure.

Flying and swimming reptiles

Many of the creatures in dinosaur books aren't actually dinosaurs. Pterosaurs, the flying reptiles like Pteranodon and the giant Quetzalcoatlus, were close cousins that flew on wings of skin stretched over a long finger. In the oceans, plesiosaurs with long necks and paddle-like flippers and mosasaurs, huge marine lizards, ruled the seas. Dinosaurs themselves lived on land, and one group never died out: birds are living dinosaurs, descended from small feathered theropods.

Those facts make for a richer prehistoric rug. A sky scene with pterosaurs gliding over a volcano, a sea scene with a plesiosaur and ammonites, and a land scene with dinosaurs can sit side by side as three panels on one rug, a world that covers the air, the land and the sea. Add a small bird perched on a branch, and curious kids get the best fact of all.

For older children, a timeline rug runs from the Triassic through the Jurassic to the Cretaceous, with the animals of each period standing in their own band. It's a design that grows with a child, from naming animals to understanding that Stegosaurus and Tyrannosaurus lived millions of years apart.

Pair a prehistoric rug with a shelf of fossils, a dinosaur lamp and a few field-guide books, and the bedroom becomes a small natural history museum where every visit ends with a new question.
