About Kids Play Rugs

Rugs that are part of the game

A play rug is much more than a soft spot on the floor: it's a town for toy cars, a racetrack, a railway, a hopscotch court or a map of an imaginary kingdom. The right design turns a playroom floor into a place children want to spend hours. Ours are printed edge to edge on soft velvet, so roads, numbers and pictures stay crisp, and, most importantly for a playroom, every rug goes in your washing machine. Juice, crayons, play dough and muddy shoes all come out on a gentle, cold cycle.

Road maps and train tracks suit the youngest drivers, while hopscotch and alphabet designs grow with a child into the early school years.

Road map rugs

A town road map is the classic play rug: streets, crossings, a roundabout, parking spots, houses, a school, a park, a hospital and a fire station, all seen from above. Children drive their toy cars from place to place, invent errands and stage traffic jams for hours. Because our velvet is short and smooth, toy cars roll easily across it, much more easily than on a thick shag rug. A 4×6 or 5×7 ft rug gives enough streets for two or three children to play at once. For a bigger town, a custom size up to 5′11″ × 10′ covers more of the playroom floor.

Race tracks

For children who love speed, a race track rug, an oval or a winding circuit with a start line, curves, a pit stop and a grandstand, turns the floor into a speedway. It's especially popular with young collectors of small die-cast cars. For more, see our Hot Wheels rugs and Disney Cars rugs.

Train tracks

A train track rug lays out a railway with stations, bridges, tunnels and crossings, perfect for toy trains and their little passengers. It also works beautifully under a train table, catching the pieces that roll off the edge. For more, see our Thomas the Train rugs.

Hopscotch

A hopscotch rug brings the classic sidewalk game indoors: numbered squares from one to ten, ready for jumping, hopping and balancing. It's a great way to burn off extra energy on a rainy day, and it quietly practices counting and coordination. Choose Standard for a hopscotch rug: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back, about 500 g/m², which stays put when children jump on it.

Letters and numbers

Alphabet and number rugs turn learning into a game: find the letter that starts your name, hop from one to ten, sit on your favorite color for story time. They're ideal for homeschool corners and preschool playrooms. For larger classroom designs, see our classroom rugs.

Imaginary worlds

Some of the best play rugs are simply a setting for stories: a castle with a moat and a drawbridge, a farm with fields and a barn, an ocean full of islands and sea creatures, a prehistoric world of volcanoes or a planet surface for astronauts. Add toy figures and animals, and children happily do the rest. For more, see our dinosaur rugs and space rugs.

Play rugs and foam play mats

Many people searching for a play mat are thinking of thick, cushioned foam mats for babies. To be clear, our play rugs are printed velvet rugs, not padded foam. Standard is 5 mm crushed velvet; Premium is 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back, about 700 g/m², which is noticeably softer and warmer for sitting and lying on, and lovely for tummy time on top of a carpeted floor. If your baby is learning to sit up on a hard floor, a foam mat underneath adds cushioning.

Standard or Premium for play

For active play, running, jumping, car racing and hopscotch, choose Standard: its non-slip faux leather back keeps the rug from sliding on wood, laminate or tile. For quieter floor time, reading, building and lying down, choose Premium, the softest rug we make. Both are printed the same way, and both go in the washing machine.

Learning through play

A good play rug quietly supports how children learn. Driving cars along a road map builds fine motor skills and spatial thinking; inventing stories in a toy town builds language and imagination; playing together on one rug teaches sharing and taking turns. Hopscotch and number designs add counting and balance. None of it feels like a lesson, which is exactly the point.

Rainy days

When it's too wet or too cold to go outside, a play rug becomes the place where energy goes. A hopscotch rug, a race track for an indoor grand prix or a big open design for a game of freeze dance can turn a long afternoon around. Keep a basket of cars, figures and beanbags nearby, and the rug does the rest.

Safe play on hard floors

On wood, laminate or tile, a rug that slides can be a tripping hazard. Our Standard rugs have a non-slip faux leather back that grips the floor. For the best grip, place the rug on a clean, dry floor and lift it now and then to wipe underneath. Keep play rugs away from the top of stairs, and choose Standard anywhere children run or jump.

Growing with your child

Children's interests change quickly, but some designs last for years. A road map works from the first toddler car to elaborate cities built by an eight-year-old; a simple rainbow or color-block rug suits a nursery, then a playroom, then a homework corner. If you'd like a rug that grows with your child, choose a design that's open-ended rather than tied to one character.

Siblings

When brothers and sisters share a playroom, one large rug they both love keeps play together, while two smaller rugs, one for each child's favorite theme, help each feel they have their own space. Either way, a washable rug means nobody has to worry about who spilled the juice.

Playroom layouts

  • A play zone: a 5×7 ft road map or race track in the middle of the room, with toy bins along the walls.
  • A reading corner: a soft 3.9 to 5.2 ft (120 to 160 cm) round rug, a floor cushion and a low bookshelf.
  • A building station: a rug under a building-brick table, catching small pieces. Our Lego rugs have more ideas.
  • A shared room: two smaller rugs, one for each child's favorite theme.

Our round rugs page shows each round size in a room.

Shaped play rugs

Rugs cut to a shape, a rainbow, a cloud, a car, a dinosaur or a castle, add a sense of fun to a playroom. Our shaped rugs come in sizes from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). For bright, cheerful colors, see our rainbow rugs.

Favorite characters

Children often want their favorite characters on the floor. You'll find our Bluey rugs, Paw Patrol rugs and many more on our kids and nursery pages, plus Pokémon, Sonic and other favorites across our site.

Your town, on a rug

One of the most special play rugs is a map of your own neighborhood: your street, your house, the school, the park and grandma's house, drawn as a road map for toy cars. Our custom rugs can print it in any size up to 5′11″ × 10′. Add your child's name to the town sign. Custom rugs are made just for you and can't be returned, so please check names and spelling before ordering.

Daycares and preschools

Play rugs are a natural fit for daycares, preschools and church nurseries, where washability matters most. A road map or alphabet rug gives children a shared space for play and circle time. For a busy room, choose Standard, and keep a spare so one can be washed while the other is down.

Sizes, shipping and returns

Rectangles come in 2×3, 2.6×3.9, 3.3×5, 4×6 and 5×7 ft. Round rugs come from 2.6 to 5.9 ft (80 to 180 cm) across, and shaped rugs from 2.6×2.6 up to 5.2×5.9 ft (80×80 to 160×180 cm). Custom sizes go up to 5′11″ × 10′. Every rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that. Unused rugs can be returned within 30 days on US orders; custom rugs can't be returned.

Care

Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle and let it air dry flat. Vacuum on a low setting between washes, and blot spills with cold water right away. The design is printed into the fibers, so the roads stay clear and the colors stay bright, however many races are run and towns are built.

Classic floor games

Some of the best games need nothing but a floor and a few markers. Four square divides a big square into four smaller ones for a bouncing-ball game. Tic-tac-toe needs a grid of nine squares and two kinds of pieces. A checkerboard turns the rug into a giant board for oversized pieces or cushions, and snakes and ladders, which began in India centuries ago as a game called Moksha Patam, teaches counting with every roll of the die.

A play rug designed around one of those games becomes a favorite for rainy days and playdates. Kids learn to take turns, count, follow rules and invent new ones, and parents get a game they can join without setting up a board. In bright, clear colors and big shapes, the rug stays easy to read for younger children while still being fun for older siblings.

FAQ

Questions about Kids Play Rugs
