About Round Rugs
Why a round rug?
Most rooms are rectangles full of rectangles: the floor, the bed, the sofa, the desk, the TV. A round rug breaks that pattern. It softens a room's hard lines, draws the eye to one spot and makes a space feel more relaxed and more deliberate at the same time. Round rugs, or circle rugs, are also practical: they fit spaces a rectangle doesn't, under a round table, in a corner, in front of a curved sofa, and they have no direction to get wrong. This page covers our six round sizes, where a circle works best, how to measure for one and the designs that were made to be round.
Ours are printed into short velvet, which suits round designs especially well. Emblems, crests, medallions, mandalas, clocks and badges were often circular to begin with, and printing keeps every detail of them crisp right to the curved edge. Every round rug goes in the washing machine.
Round rug sizes
Our round rugs come in six diameters. Each product page lists the sizes for that design.
| Diameter | In feet and inches | Works well |
|---|---|---|
| 80 cm | 2.6 ft (31.5″) | Beside a bed, at a door, under a side chair |
| 100 cm | 3.3 ft (39.4″) | Reading nook, under a swivel desk chair, a small entry |
| 120 cm | 3.9 ft (47.2″) | Nursery, in front of an armchair, a small round side table |
| 140 cm | 4.6 ft (55.1″) | Middle of a small bedroom, under a compact bistro table |
| 160 cm | 5.2 ft (63″) | Living room centerpiece, a kids' play circle |
| 180 cm | 5.9 ft (70.9″) | Under a small round dining or breakfast table, a large statement |
To choose a size, mark the circle on the floor with painter's tape or a piece of string, then walk around it to see how much floor it covers and whether it reaches under the furniture you want it to.
For a diameter in between, or your own design in a circle, our custom rugs print round rugs from 2′ to 5′11″ (60 to 180 cm) in 4-inch (10 cm) steps.
Measuring for a round rug
- Find the center. Decide what the rug will be centered on: a table, a chair, a light fixture, the middle of a nook.
- Measure the reach. From that center, measure to where the rug should end on the side with the least space, a wall, a door swing, a sofa leg. Double it for the largest diameter that fits.
- Check the movement. For a table, add the distance chairs move back; for a desk chair, its turning and rolling circle.
- Try it on the floor. Tie a string to a pencil, hold the other end at the center, and trace the circle with painter's tape. Live with it for a day before you order.
Under a round table
The most classic place for a round rug is under a round table, where the shapes echo each other. The rule designers use: the rug should extend at least about 24 inches (60 cm) beyond the edge of the table all the way round, so chairs stay on the rug when someone pushes back. That means a round rug roughly four feet wider than the table. Our largest, 180 cm (5.9 ft), suits a small bistro or breakfast table with two or three chairs; a larger dining table needs a bigger rug than our standard range. Choose Standard under a table: its non-slip back stays put as chairs move, and its thin profile keeps chair legs level.
Under a swivel chair
A round rug is a natural fit for a chair that turns more than it rolls, an office chair at a compact desk, a gaming chair, a swivel armchair. A 3.3 or 3.9 ft (100 or 120 cm) rug centered under the chair covers its turning circle. For a rolling chair, choose Standard, whose 5 mm crushed velvet and non-slip faux leather back let wheels roll freely. If the chair rolls back a long way, a rectangle may suit better; see desk chair rugs.
Reading nooks and corners
A round rug turns an empty corner into a place: an armchair, a floor lamp, a side table and a circle of soft velvet. A 3.3 or 3.9 ft (100 or 120 cm) rug is usually right for one chair; 4.6 ft (140 cm) for a chair and a footstool. Choose Premium for its 7 mm plush velvet, warmer and softer for sitting with a book.
Living rooms
In a living room, a round rug works well in three situations: in front of a curved or sectional sofa, where it follows the shape of the seating; under a round coffee table, where it frames it; and in a room with an awkward shape, where a rectangle would point the wrong way. In a small living room, a 5.2 ft (160 cm) round rug often looks more generous than a rectangle of a similar area, because there are no corners to measure against.
Bedrooms and nurseries
Beside a bed, an 2.6 ft (80 cm) round rug is a softer alternative to the usual rectangle. In the middle of a small bedroom or a nursery, a 4.6 or 5.2 ft (140 or 160 cm) round rug creates a play circle or a spot for floor cushions. Round rugs feel especially gentle in a nursery: no corners, easy to crawl on, and a natural shape for a moon, a sun, a flower or an animal face.
Play circles for kids
Children gather naturally in a circle, for story time, for building, for games, and a round rug gives that circle a place. A 4.6 or 5.2 ft (140 or 160 cm) round rug in the middle of a playroom becomes the spot where games start. On hard floors, choose Standard so it stays put when kids run onto it; on carpet, Premium is softer for sitting. Designs with something to find, a planet, a flower, a map, a face, keep little ones interested.
Pets' favorite spot
Dogs and cats love a round rug the way they love a round bed: it is the right shape to curl up on. An 2.6 or 3.3 ft (80 or 100 cm) round rug by a window or in front of a radiator often becomes a pet's spot within a day. Velvet has no loops for claws to catch, pet hair lifts easily with a vacuum, and the whole rug goes in the washing machine.
Small apartments
In a studio or a small apartment, a round rug can define a zone without making the room feel divided: a circle under a little dining table, another by the reading chair. Two round rugs in one small space feel lighter than two rectangles, and they echo each other nicely when they share a color or a motif.
Entries and hallways
A round rug in a square entry hall, under a round console or a hanging light, makes a strong first impression. Choose Standard here for its grip and its thin profile, which lets the door clear it.
Designs made for a circle
Some designs simply belong in a circle:
- Crests, emblems and badges: faction symbols, chapter icons, clan marks and house crests from our gaming and anime rugs.
- Poké Balls, basketballs and baseballs, which are round already: see Poké Ball rugs and sports rugs.
- Mandalas and medallions, from our zen and spiritual rugs.
- Suns, moons and planets, from our celestial and space rugs.
- Flowers and faces, from daisies to cartoon characters seen head-on.
- Clocks, records and dials, a vinyl record from our music rugs is a perfect round rug.
Round or die-cut?
A round rug is a circle, whatever is printed on it. A die-cut rug follows the outline of its artwork, so the rug is the shape of a character, a logo or an object. If the design is roughly round, a Poké Ball, a crest, a face, a round rug is cleaner and easier to place; if the outline itself is the point, a figure, a sneaker, a car, look at our shaped rugs.
Layering a round rug on a rectangle
A round rug on top of a larger rectangular rug is a designer's trick for adding color and focus to a big space. Lay a large, plain, low-pile rug under the seating area and place a printed round rug on top, under the coffee table or slightly off-center. The round shape breaks up the rectangle and the print brings the room's color exactly where people look.
Light and a round rug
A round rug under a pendant light or a round table lamp creates a pool of light and color that draws people in. Velvet catches that light from the side, so a round rug under a low lamp looks warmer and richer in the evening than it does at noon. In a dim corner, a lighter-colored round rug can do as much as a second lamp to brighten the space.
Mixing round and rectangular rugs in one home
Most homes end up with both shapes, and they work well together when they share a color or a style. A rectangular rug in the living room and a round one in the adjoining reading corner, or rectangles in the bedrooms and a round rug in the entry, give a home variety without feeling random. Keep the most detailed design on the shape that is seen most.
Standard or Premium?
Standard: 5 mm crushed velvet on a non-slip faux leather back. The right level under a table, under a chair, in an entry and on any slippery floor. Premium: 7 mm plush velvet on a bamboo and cotton back. The comfortable level for reading nooks, bedrooms and nurseries; add a thin pad on smooth floors.
Placing a round rug well
- Center it on something. A round rug looks deliberate when it is centered under a table, a light fixture, a chair or the middle of a nook.
- Give it space. A circle needs breathing room; leave visible floor around it rather than pushing it into a corner.
- Mind the rotation. Designs with a top and bottom, a character, a scene, look best facing the door or the main seat.
Care and rotation
Vacuum on a low setting, working from the center outward. Blot spills with cold water. Machine wash on a gentle, cold cycle when needed and let the rug air dry flat. Because a round rug has no fixed direction, it is easy to rotate a quarter turn every few months, so sunlight and footsteps wear it evenly. The design is printed into the fibers, so it keeps its color through washing.
Round rugs as gifts
A round rug with a crest, a Poké Ball or a mandala is an easy gift because it fits almost anywhere: by a bed, in a corner, under a chair. The 3.3 ft (100 cm) size is the safest choice when you don't know the room or the floor plan. Each rug is printed to order in 1–3 business days and ships from Turkey; US delivery usually takes 2–5 business days after that.
FAQ
Questions about Round Rugs
What sizes do your round rugs come in?
Six diameters: 2.6, 3.3, 3.9, 4.6, 5.2 and 5.9 ft (80, 100, 120, 140, 160 and 180 cm) (2.6, 3.3, 3.9, 4.6, 5.2 and 5.9 ft). Each product page lists the sizes for its design.
What size round rug goes under a round table?
About four feet wider than the table, so the rug extends roughly 24 inches beyond the edge and chairs stay on it. Our 5.9 ft (180 cm) rug suits a small bistro or breakfast table.
Is a circle rug the same as a round rug?
Yes. Circle rug and round rug mean the same thing: a rug with a circular shape. Die-cut rugs that follow an outline are a different style.
Can a round rug go under a desk chair?
Yes, especially for a chair that swivels more than it rolls. Choose Standard and a 3.3 or 3.9 ft (100 or 120 cm) diameter to cover the turning circle.
Where does a round rug look best?
Centered under something: a round table, a reading chair, a light fixture or the middle of a nook. Leave visible floor around it so the circle reads clearly.
Which level should I choose for a round rug?
Standard under tables, chairs and in entries for its non-slip back; Premium for reading nooks, bedrooms and nurseries for its softer 7 mm velvet.
Can I get a round rug in my own design?
Yes. Custom rugs print your image in a circle from 2′ to 5′11″ (60 to 180 cm), in 4-inch (10 cm) steps.
How do I keep a round rug wearing evenly?
Rotate it a quarter turn every few months. Vacuum on a low setting, blot spills with cold water and machine wash on a gentle cold cycle when needed.
