About Mouse Pads

What a Padrift mouse pad is made of

Every pad on this page is built the same way, whatever the art on top. The body is 3 mm of neoprene, a dense, springy foam rubber that gives your wrist and forearm a little cushion and lets the pad lie flat on the desk. Bonded to it is a fabric top, which is the surface your mouse glides on and the layer the design is printed on, edge to edge. The underside is a non-slip base that holds the pad where you put it, and the whole outline is closed with stitching so the fabric can't start to fray at the edges.

That build is the same for a small pad that only holds your mouse and for a full-desk mat that runs under your keyboard, monitor stand and notebook. What changes from page to page is the artwork: a One Piece scene, a Warhammer 40K emblem, a field of flowers, a Persian-rug pattern or a quiet marble texture. The materials, the thickness and the care stay the same, so you can choose on looks and size alone.

The print is high resolution and fade-resistant. Fine line work, small text and soft gradients come out clean, which matters on a pad you will look at for hours every day.

Mouse pad, desk mat, desk pad: what the names mean

The names overlap, and shops use them loosely. In practice they describe size more than material. A mouse pad, or mouse mat, is usually the small square or rectangle that sits under the mouse alone. Once a pad is long enough to take the keyboard as well, it gets called a desk mat, desk pad or keyboard mat. The biggest ones, which cover most of the desktop, are often sold as full-desk or extended pads.

All of them do the same job: they give the mouse a consistent surface, they cushion your wrist, and they protect the desk underneath. On this page every size is the same pad in a different footprint, so a small mouse pad and a large desk mat with the same design are made the same way. If a listing elsewhere says desk mat, mouse mat or desk pad, compare the measurements rather than the name.

Do you need a mouse pad at all?

A modern optical mouse works on many surfaces, so a pad isn't strictly required. Most people still end up using one, for four practical reasons. The first is tracking: wood grain, glossy lacquer and glass can make the pointer skip or stall, while a fabric surface gives the sensor the same texture everywhere. The second is wear. The small feet under a mouse, often called skates, rub against the desk thousands of times a day, and a rough desktop wears them down and gets polished smooth where the mouse moves. The third is comfort, because 3 mm of neoprene under the wrist feels very different from the hard edge of a desk after a long day. The fourth is simply order: a pad marks out where the mouse and keyboard live, and a large one does the same for the whole setup.

Mouse pad sizes

There are eight desk sizes. The table lists each one in inches, with centimeters alongside, and what it is built to hold.

SizeMeasurementsWhat fits on it
S11.8″ × 15.7″ (30 × 40 cm)Your mouse only, leaving the rest of the desk free
TCG Mat14″ × 24″ (35.5 × 61 cm)A roomy mouse area, or a trading card game layout
M11.8″ × 27.6″ (30 × 70 cm)A tenkeyless or 75% keyboard with room for the mouse
L11.8″ × 31.5″ (30 × 80 cm)A full-size keyboard and mouse side by side
XL15.7″ × 35.4″ (40 × 90 cm)Keyboard, mouse and wrist room on most desks
XXL23.6″ × 35.4″ (60 × 90 cm)Extra depth for a laptop, notebook or microphone
3XL19.7″ × 39.4″ (50 × 100 cm)Wide setups and low-sensitivity aiming
4XL23.6″ × 47.2″ (60 × 120 cm)Most of a standard desk, for one continuous surface

Many designs also come in three chair-mat sizes for the floor under your desk chair: 31.5″ × 47.2″ (80 × 120 cm), 39.4″ × 59.1″ (100 × 150 cm) and 47.2″ × 70.9″ (120 × 180 cm). Each product page lists the sizes available for that design.

How to choose the right size for your desk

Start with the keyboard, because it decides the length. A full-size keyboard with a number pad is about 17.5″ (44.5 cm) wide, a tenkeyless board about 14″ (36 cm), and 75% and 65% boards are shorter still. Add the space your mouse actually travels, not just the mouse itself. Someone who plays with low sensitivity and moves the whole arm can sweep 10″ (25 cm) or more to one side; someone who works in spreadsheets with a fast pointer may need only a few inches.

Then look at depth. The 11.8″ (30 cm) deep sizes, M and L, hold a keyboard and mouse with your wrists resting on the pad's front edge. XL adds about 4″ (10 cm), which lets your forearms rest on the fabric instead of the desk edge. XXL and 4XL are 23.6″ (60 cm) deep, enough to put a laptop, a notebook, a stream deck or the foot of a microphone arm on the pad too.

Finally, measure the desk itself. A common desk is about 60″ × 30″ (152 × 76 cm). On that desk a 4XL covers most of the surface and leaves a strip at each end for a lamp or a drink, while an XL sits in front of the monitors and leaves the back of the desk free. If your monitor stand has wide feet, decide whether you want the pad to run under them or stop in front of them; both work, but the pad needs to lie flat either way.

  • Laptop only, or a mouse next to a laptop: S or the 14″ × 24″ TCG Mat size.
  • Compact keyboard and mouse: M.
  • Full-size keyboard and mouse: L, or XL if you want room for your wrists.
  • Keyboard, mouse and more on the pad: XXL, 3XL or 4XL.

Large, XL and extended mouse pads

Size names are not standard across brands. One shop's XL is another shop's large, and "extended" can mean anything from a keyboard-length strip to a mat that covers the desk. That is why every size here is listed by its measurements first.

If you are replacing a pad you already like, measure it and pick the closest match. Many gaming pads are sold in millimeters: a 900 × 400 mm pad is the same footprint as our XL at 35.4″ × 15.7″, and an 800 × 300 mm pad matches our L at 31.5″ × 11.8″. If you are moving up from a small mouse pad to your first large one, XL is the size that changes the most for the least desk space, because it takes the keyboard and still gives the mouse room to travel.

The biggest sizes are about how the desk looks as much as how the mouse moves. A 4XL turns the whole desk into one printed surface, hides scratches or an old finish, and ties the keyboard, mouse and accessories together into one setup.

Why a cloth surface

The top of every pad is fabric. Cloth is what most people picture when they think of a mouse pad, and for good reason: it gives the mouse a steady, even surface, it feels soft under the wrist, and it is quiet, with none of the scratching sound a hard plastic pad can make.

Fabric also gives an optical sensor something to read. Glass desks and glossy lacquered tops can make a mouse jump or stop tracking, because the sensor has no texture to follow. A fabric pad solves that, and it protects the glass at the same time.

The fabric is also what carries the design. Because the print covers the whole top, the art runs right to the stitched edge with no white border, and the part your mouse covers looks the same as the rest of the pad.

3 mm: how thick a mouse pad should be

Pads range from very thin cloth sheets to thick pads of 5 mm and more. Our pads are 3 mm. That is enough neoprene to soften the hard edge of the desk under your wrist and to even out small bumps in the desktop, while staying low enough that a keyboard sits steady on top and doesn't wobble when you type.

Thickness also affects how a large mat behaves. A desk mat has to stay flat across a long surface, with no ridge where it meets the keyboard and no corner lifting. A 3 mm neoprene body is heavy enough to lie flat and flexible enough to roll up for shipping and storage.

The non-slip base and stitched edges

A pad that drifts while you aim or type gets in the way. The underside of every pad is a non-slip base that holds onto wood, laminate and glass desks, so the pad stays in place when you push the mouse hard or rest your arms on it. It grips best on a clean, dry desk: wipe the desktop before you lay a new pad down.

The edges are stitched all the way around. Without stitching, the fabric on a cloth pad can lift and fray where your wrist rubs the front edge every day. The stitching closes the edge, keeps the top layer bonded to the neoprene, and frames the print with a thin, neat border.

Designs for every kind of desk

The designs are grouped by theme, so you can start from what you love rather than from a size.

Anime Mouse Pads covers series from One Piece, Pokémon and Naruto to Evangelion, Berserk and Demon Slayer, with pages for characters such as Luffy, Makima and Hatsune Miku. Gaming Mouse Pads gathers game worlds: Warhammer 40K, World of Warcraft, Elden Ring, Zelda, Hollow Knight and dozens more. Movie & TV Mouse Pads brings in Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, Godzilla and Harry Potter, and Cartoon Mouse Pads has Stitch, Rick and Morty, Adventure Time and Scooby-Doo.

For a setup that reads as style rather than fandom, Hypebeast Mouse Pads has streetwear and designer prints from BAPE, Supreme and KAWS to Louis Vuitton and Gucci, and Aesthetic Mouse Pads has cute and kawaii art, flowers, space and galaxy scenes, marble, abstract patterns and pads that look like a Persian rug laid across the desk.

A busy design works best on a large mat, where there is room for the whole scene around the keyboard. A small mouse pad suits a single bold image or a clean pattern, since most of it sits under your hand.

A desk mat for work, not just play

Desk mats started on gaming setups, but they are just as useful on a work desk. A mat protects the desktop from the small scratches that keyboard feet, laptops and mugs leave over time, which matters on a rented office desk or a piece of furniture you want to keep. It gives the mouse a better surface than bare wood or laminate. It also softens the sound of typing on a hard desk, which colleagues on a video call will notice.

For a home office, a large mat also marks out the workspace. When the mat goes down, the desk is for work; it is a small, visible line between the laptop and the rest of the room. A calm design, such as marble, a landscape or an abstract pattern, keeps the desk from looking busy on camera.

Card games on the 14″ × 24″ size

One of the sizes is 14″ × 24″ (35.5 × 61 cm), the size most trading card game playmats use. On a desk it is a generous mouse pad; on a table it is a full play area for Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering or One Piece cards. The cushioned neoprene makes cards easy to pick up and keeps sleeves off a hard tabletop.

If you mostly play cards, our TCG Playmats line has playmats made for the game, including versions with printed card zones. If you mostly use the mouse and play cards now and then, the 14″ × 24″ mouse pad covers both.

How to clean a mouse pad

A fabric pad picks up dust, skin oil and the occasional coffee drip. A quick clean every few weeks keeps the surface even and the colors bright. For everyday dirt, wipe the surface with a damp cloth. For a deeper clean, hand wash it:

  1. Fill a sink or tub with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild soap or gentle detergent.
  2. Lay the pad in the water and gently scrub the fabric with a soft brush or sponge, working in small circles. Pay attention to the area where your wrist rests.
  3. Rinse it under clean running water until no soap comes out.
  4. Press out the water with a towel instead of wringing or folding the pad.
  5. Let it air dry flat, out of direct sunlight, before you put it back on the desk.

Hand washing is gentler on the stitched edges and the print than a washing machine, and a pad that dries flat stays flat. Avoid bleach, harsh cleaners, a tumble dryer and an iron. A large desk mat can take a day to dry completely, so wash it in the evening if you need your desk in the morning.

When your pad arrives

Pads are rolled for shipping, so a new pad may arrive with a slight curl. Unroll it, lay it flat on a clean desk, and the curl relaxes on its own within a few hours. Laying it the other way up for a little while helps a stubborn corner. Avoid heat, which can damage the fabric and the base.

Mouse pads as gifts

A mouse pad is an easy gift to get right for someone who games, studies or works at a desk. It is used every day, it sits in plain sight, and you can choose the design for the person: their main game, the anime they keep recommending, a film they quote, or simply a color that suits their room. When you don't know their desk, XL is the safe size, because it fits most desks and works with any keyboard.

Since every pad is printed when it is ordered, plan around the making and delivery times below if the gift has a date.

How your mouse pad is made and delivered

Each pad is printed when you order it, then finished and packed. Making it takes 1–3 business days. Orders ship from Turkey; delivery to the United States and Canada usually takes 2–5 business days after that, Europe 1–4 business days and Australia 5–7. Unused pads in their original packaging can be returned within 30 days on US orders; return shipping is paid by the customer, and our returns page explains the exceptions for custom-made pieces.

Your own design on a mouse pad

If the design you want isn't here, the Custom Mouse Pads page prints your own photo, artwork or logo on the same 3 mm pad with stitched edges. It comes in seven sizes, from a 16″ × 12″ (40 × 30 cm) mouse pad to a 48″ × 24″ (120 × 60 cm) desk mat. You upload the image, the builder suggests the size it fits best, and you can see the pad in 3D and on your own desk in AR before you order.

FAQ

Questions about Mouse Pads

What is a Padrift mouse pad made of?

A 3 mm neoprene body with a fabric top that carries the print, a non-slip base underneath and stitched edges all the way around. Every size and every design is built the same way.

What size mouse pad fits a keyboard and a mouse?

For a full-size keyboard, L (11.8″ × 31.5″, 30 × 80 cm) holds the keyboard and mouse side by side, and XL (15.7″ × 35.4″, 40 × 90 cm) adds room for your wrists. A tenkeyless or 75% board fits on M (11.8″ × 27.6″, 30 × 70 cm).

What is the best way to clean a mouse pad?

Wipe everyday dirt off with a damp cloth. For a deeper clean, hand wash it in lukewarm water with a little mild soap, scrub gently with a soft brush, rinse, press the water out with a towel and let it dry flat.

Can I put a mouse pad or desk mat in the washing machine?

We recommend hand washing instead, for the large desk mats too. It is gentler on the stitched edges and the print, and a pad that is washed by hand and dried flat keeps its shape. Skip the dryer and the iron.

What is the difference between a mouse pad and a desk mat?

Mostly size. A mouse pad sits under the mouse alone; a desk mat is long enough to hold the keyboard too. Ours are the same 3 mm neoprene pad with a fabric top in every size, from 11.8″ × 15.7″ up to 23.6″ × 47.2″.

Will the pad slide on a glass or smooth desk?

The non-slip base holds on wood, laminate and glass, and it grips best when the desk is clean and dry. On a glass desk the fabric top also gives an optical mouse sensor a texture to track.

My new mouse pad arrived curled. How do I flatten it?

Pads ship rolled, so a slight curl is normal. Lay the pad flat on a clean desk and it relaxes within a few hours; turning it over for a while helps a corner that keeps lifting. Don't use heat.

Do you sell mouse pads with a wrist rest or RGB lighting?

No. Our pads are flat 3 mm neoprene pads with a fabric top and stitched edges, without a gel wrist rest or built-in lights. The larger sizes give your wrists and forearms room to rest on the cushioned fabric instead.

How long does a mouse pad take to reach the US?

Each pad is made in 1–3 business days, then delivery to the United States usually takes 2–5 business days, so most US orders arrive within 3–8 business days of ordering.
